View Full Version : Bought my first gun...

Yesterday I went to the gun store with my boyfriend so he could pick up his XD45 and while we were waiting on the background check and all of that, we started looking at the guns I liked. At first I was sold on a little revolver that felt great in my hands, but wasn't too happy that we were going to have to buy rounds just for this gun. My boyfriend then told me I was going to have to put 500-1000 rounds through it and it was going to be expensive and all I heard was "You are going to have to put 500,000 rounds through it" and then looked at the price of bullets and I was like holy hell, this is going to cost me an insane amount of money. After that little mix-up I decided that I didn't want the revolver and started looking at the Kahrs' the store had because they fit my hand.
I ended up purchasing a cw9 for $429. I wanted to pick up a stainless Kahr, but the one I liked they had sold, so I went with my second choice.

Nice choice for personal protection. Stainless is nice but very reflective. You need not be seen or draw attention.
Have fun and be safe.

congrats! i hear good things about them. too bad you dont live near me...i have 1,000's of 9mm rounds that were given to me by a local law enforcment agency, a "donation"...
500 rounds should be enough.... unless you just want to get crazy...LOL.. be sure and clean it ever time after shooting ;) im sure your boyfriend will tell you that.
i love my xd .45.. got one when they first came out last year...in fact i think i posted about it on this forum... awesome gun. got NRA's gun of the year award this year too...

Thanks I will. I was thinking the same thing about stainless. I just wanted the stainless because it stands up better than the polimer frame, but o well. It was like $200 cheaper than the stainless one I wanted, so if and when I decide stainless, I can just buy that and have two beauties.
Being safe is a definete. I plan on taking some courses from a buddy of ours that teaches gun classes and CCW permit classes. Once I am fully comfortable with it, I will then try for my CCW permit. I was in the Army and have also been a hunter since I was like eight, but never really been around handguns that much, so it is going to take a little while to get used to.

You didn't happen to purchase your firearm from "The Firing Line" in Aurora did you?

one simple percaution is what you use:
always assume the handgun is loaded and off safety......adjust from there.

Uhmmm..... who are you and what do you know??!?!
Lol yeah I bought it at "The Firing Line". The guys there are really nice and the guy that helped us buy our guns said we can come back and find him and go shooting for free.

sweet!
i still plan on picking up a MK9 for a new carry. i have a friend that has had 2 of these. don't be disapointed when you first shoot it. break it down and relube on the wet side. blast 250 rounds though it. clean it and it will be broken in. its amazing watching the group tighten as it gets broken in.

Yep, always have done that. Always treat a weapon as if it is a loaded weapon. Learned that in hunters safety and it has stuck with me.

I'm in the business and have done business with them many times (Richard Taylor is the salesman I usually deal with). In fact, I happened to be on the phone with him last week just as that school shooting broke out (one of the other salesmans wife works at the school). It was kind of eerie knowing about it before it hit the national news stations. In any event, the crew over at the Firing Line is top notch, great bunch of guys!

Why is it that you have to put 1,000 rounds through it? Is that a break-in procedure?
Andrea

Yeah I am assuming so. I was reading my manual yesterday for it (boyfriend made me do it before I touched anything on the gun) and I can't remember exactly what it said as far as how many rounds, but I think it was at least 250 if not more.

Just got to know the right people. We got a "donation" from a certain law enforcement group in the form of shotgun rounds a while back. :-pimp:

With older autos 500 rounds was the rule. With modern guns 200 should be fine. Just keep it clean and oiled...

I usually shoot 500 rounds everytime I go to the range, just to keep my skills up, usually 300 with the right hand and 200 with the left.

I don't suppose you could donate some of those 1000s of 9mm rounds to me could you? Or sell, either or.

I used to reload my own which is the reason I stayed clear of 9mm. I didn't know anyone at the time who had the die to remove them damn caps.
I miss my Python .357 :(

A good choice, Andrea. I don't own one personally; but I've got a friend who bought one for his wife. He has nothing but good things to say about it.

Try the p9. P9 in stainless was the original gun I was looking it but they had sold it.

Is Kahr Arms still in business? I used to work at a place that made parts for them. I personally made a lot of firing pins for their 9mm compacts. They got nailed for poor security at their plant in Worcester MA, some employee snuck out with enough parts to put one together, which later was in the hands of a murderer. They were very heavily fined, I thought it was their death knell.
Anyone know what happened to them? If still making guns, are they still in Worcester MA?

You should have bought a GLOCK no break in period and you can shoot forever with no cleaning. I'm at 15000+ rds in my GLOCK 30 with no malfunctions at all.

Glocks are great guns and what I will be picking up soon.
My service weapon at the academy is a glock and after 5 weeks of constant shooting it started to malfunction. Three times I had to tap, roll, rack, in order to finish my sessions.
Afterwards I cleaned it and it was good as new. Wish they gave us enough time to clean it everytime!

I don't like Glocks. They are like a sardine can. Toooo fat for my hands.

Glocks are like Zaino, there are people who hate them, people who are rabid Glockvangelists, and people who don't have a clue.
Having shot several, I am in an altogether different group - I don't HATE them but they are far from my favorite. I don't like the grip angle, don't point naturally for me.
I have a Walther P990 as my primary pistol, it's purty...I'm thinking of getting a 1911 next, or maybe a Sig (my dealer has a beautiful used P220 that I'm falling for).
I like the Kahrs, particularly the new 45 (P45 I think it is) that they make. If by some miracle I am ever able to secure CCW in Kalifornia here, I'd pick one up in a heartbeat.

Yep, the grip angle is what ruins it for me. I do have a G27, its not bad.
Get the 1911, they are great guns!! The week I turned 21 I went down to the local gun store and picked one up, been shooting it for years....
Oh, and OP, congrats!

Thanks everyone. It took me at least two years to find a gun I was comfortable holding in my hand. A while back I did find a little Walther (I believe) that was 380 but my boyfriend wouldn't let me buy it for personal protection. I was also thinking about a revolver because they are easier for me, so I will probably still pick up a revolver in the future to possibly be my carry gun over the Kahr. I mainly just wanted to have my own gun that I could get used to when we went to the range or camping. I always hated having to carry around my boyfriend's huge-ol 1911 or the like and it being like a brick in my hands.

sorta confidential.... but a county police force donated old ammo for firing practice under my 501(c)3 FTE organization, Wolfdog Rescue Resources, Inc. we were prohibited from selling the silver tips, ball tips, and regular HP's......so they ended up in my ammo box..........well...some are gone now...LOL
