View Full Version : Best tire for traction and wear?

Can anyone reccommend a tire that has better grip than the stock BFG's and get say 30,000 mile thread life with them? I know, you can't get great traction with great wear, but is their a tire that has a compromise of the two and still performs better than these crappy stock BFG's? I was looking a Nitto 555's in the stock size, any feedback on mileage of those, traction should be superior! Need to replace the back two asap, dealers aren't no help with sizing and thread wear so i told them i was going to hold off until i talked with you guys! Thanks! I'm sure someone might have asked something similar to this but the search feature didn't help me much, sorry if i missed something!

I doubt that anything is going to wear the same as the BFG's as they are rated at 400 and most everything else in its category is rated at most about 360 (avon 550's). Do you want summer only tires like you lised that you had looked into the Nitto 555's?

yeah, the BFG KDW NTs, as long as they aren't going to be in the snow. they grip as well in 245s as my Nitto DRs did in 275s...

I have had nitto 555 extremes and they were were wearing good. With the new wheels I bought Toyo T1 R's and I love them, they are not going to wear as good as the stockers but these tires grip great, in the rain they are great.
I just thought of something. With the Nittos I noticed that the traction was not that great on the street, yes they grip much better than the stockers but they need to be hot (I know as the case with most tires)

Yeah, forgot to mention i'm more or less interested in summer tires. If weather gets to bad in wisconsin, i got a 4x4 truck to use. Seen someone pointed out a deal on Potenza S-03 Pole Position tires at $95.00 each. Rated at the top and are summer tires. Will they last though? Really don't want to change tires every 20,000 miles. Have 15,000 on the stock ones. Bought the car used with 12,000 miles and the fronts were new and the backs are bald now and i didn't beat them up that bad! Not acceptible for me!

If you have 17 inch rims....GET the pole positions. I got about 25000 on my mustang before I sold it and still had some tread left. But you will NEVER get a good tire for that cheap. Why are you still reading this, order the tires!

I'll have to see if another place can get the S-03's then. I called tires plus today and they said they would match the price at the tire rack. Thats if they can still get them!

Bridgestone RE960AS, I have them on the rear of my car and they are outstanding.
Check out tire rack for pricing.
FYI....The treadwear ratings are deceptive.
A BFG with a 400 rating, and another manufacturers rating of 400 does not mean that they have the same wear rating. It means absolutley nothing.
They are only designed to compare tires of the same manufacturer.
So a BFG with a 400 rating, and a BFG with a 200 rating, the 200 will last half as long. But if it's a Bridgestone, or a Goodyear, it's meaningless.

Thanks for all the info! Called the Tire Rack today to see if they still had any S0-3 Pole Positions left and it was my lucky day as they had a set for me for $423.00 shipped to my house! They don't look very fancy compared to those BFG's above and some others thread patterns but they get great reviews so I figured at this price they were worth a shot. Hope i'm not wishing later for wider ones as I got the stock size, little worried about rubbing and wanted the same size on all for corners so i can rotate them and get some life out of them!
