are the nuts going around the wheel plastic or metal?

12-12-2006, 11:43 AM
Would staggered 19s fit without rolling the fenders if i had a Pedders TrackII 1/2" drop in the back? The stock 17s actually kind of disappear into the fender, but the camber is pretty aggressive so I measure about a 3/4" space between the wheel and the edge of the fender lip on both sides.

6.Owned- The rivets are metal all the way around the wheel!
Wraith- The fenders would require rolling, especially with a drop in the back, the wheels would definitley rub without. Let me know if you have any more questions!!

Bump for sexy wheels.
Plus Wheelmax sucks as far as customer service....they're several HGH members who had bought from wheelmax. They ALL had problems, and then recieved bad customer service on top of it.
Me, I bought from Topshelf....awesome service and of course, they are a SUPPORTING VENDOR, that other company is NOT.

Ahhh, yep roads can definitely be a factor when going with a lower profile tire on the wheel. Have you checked out our Ruf wheels, or other AZA?'s We have most of the other styles in stock in 18's if you see anything you like!

This question may show my ignorance, but wouldn't 275 30 19's in the back and 245 35 19's on front feel very similar on rough roads as the stock Bridgestone 235 40 18's on stock 18" wheels? Isn't it more about the vertical tire thickness between the road and the wheel than the diameter of the wheel?
I would think that a 245 40 18/ 275 35 18 set up would feel better on rough roads than the stock 235 40 18 tires.

Shameless plug for Sean and TopShelf...
These wheels are HAWT! They totally made over the entire appearance of my goat. I have the 245/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear, with Toyo T1r's. I also have BMR drag bags. By keeping about 14-15lbs in the bags, I have no rubbing issues whatsoever, and my fenders are not rolled. When I have someone in the backseat, (or my drag radials) I put a little more air in the bags.
You won't go wrong dealing with Sean either. I've gotten my wheels/tires, my aeroforce gauges and banshee pod, and my hubrings from Sean. He even installed my gauges for me, while visiting a local tuner we both happened to be at. In 100* weather, no less.

As far as the ride, I can't complain. It's a sports car, not a luxury sedan to begin with, so I don't mind feeling the bumps. It may be a little rougher than stock, but definitely not enough to matter to me. My 5yr old rides in the car every day as it's my daily driver, and she's never said a word about bumping her. Just my humble opinion. :)

I want AZA Z-15's in 18's dammit. Why is it that any rims i like is just not available in the format i want. I'm not too sure about 19's i already rolled my fender with a guard rail so i don't want to chance anything that may need rolling as my fenders might not be perfect. Where the hell are the 18x8's??

12-15-2006, 12:24 PM
Thanks for the plug, Lisa :) I'm glad we could help you out! And damn, those wheels still look killer!
planman - As for the ride, you have the right idea...basically with a 235/40 you have 235x40%=94mm of sidewall vs 245/35 is 245x35%=86mm...so you are losing some, but what most are comparing it to is probably an 18" aftermarket setup where you have 245/40, so 98mm of sidewall. Between 86 and 98, there really is a difference...the narrow sidewall reduces flex in the tire and keeps it from reducing shock as well as decreasing forward and lateral grip just a bit. Now this isn't to say they won't stick...you step up to performance tires (like the T1-R's for example) and you'll think you're riding on rails compared to the stockers! It's only really if you run the 18's and 19's back to back that you feel it.
Z-15's ...drumroll... are coming back!
I'm going to post up when I have specifics on whether 18" or 19" or both, but we have convinced our supplier to place the order and bring the Z-15's back! :) They should be here either with the 18" Z-1's or just after that.

2 questions:
- is this deal still going on, and if so, for how much longer? Or is it a "never expires" deal? :)
- do all 4 fenderwells need to be rolled, or just the rears? And do the rears HAVE to be rolled no matter what, or would improved rear shocks and/or Drag Bags set at about halfway (something comfortable for daily driving) eliminate the need to have the rears rolled?
Thanks much!!

Hey Guys,
Yes, I'm alive...I did have a rough time for a while there dealing with some long-term health issues  so I apologize to those of you who did not hear back immediately or had trouble reaching us. TJ and I are back in the office full time and I hope to be on my feet and healthy for a while.
Now to answer a few questions...
Q: Is this thread still alive?
A: It is now! :D
Q: Are people ordering and getting their wheels?
A: They sure are! We have been able to speed up the processing time so orders to most of the US will take about a week to arrive! Take a look at the pics below to see one of our latest customers' car...those damn Z-1's look better every time I see them!
Q: Is the sale still going? Or is it "permanent"?
A: This particular sale has ended, but our prices are always set to give you guys awesome deals and beat out ALL of wheelmax's prices. We lower the price additionally for forum members as a thank you for supporting us.
We do not create "Permanent Sales" as that's really just a way of getting around the rules set forth by the manufacturer for listing parts at MSRP...as the president of the company, I won't allow this as it is essentially an underhanded tactic.
Q: Will the 18" Z-1's have a chrome lip when they come in?
A: NO!!! We did not order the chrome rims for the 18's! In fact, we never ordered the chrome rims for the 19's...this was something done by the previous owner of wheelmax on his way out the door; while we could not change the order for the 19's, we had enough time to change the 18" order. The 18's coming in will have the original "polished" lip just like all previous Z-1's.
Q: Are the wheels clear-coated?
A: Yes and no...let me explain. The wheel face on all styles have a protective finish on them that allows you to simply wipe brake dust away. The chrome lips are not clearcoated but instead are actual chrome pieces and should be cleaned with chrome cleaner (usually you can just wipe away any road grime though). The polished finish IS clearcoated and makes cleanup a breeze; I personally have had a set of these for 2 years and never had a problem with them. There was a small run of these that sold last year that did have an issue with the clearcoat peeling, but this was isolated to a manufacturing error in one run of the Z-1's; no other wheels were effected by this and no future wheels will have this problem. In addition, we are following through on our promise to stand by our customers and are having ALL wheels with issues REPLACED with brand new sets for those affected.
Q: What are the offsets and do I need to roll my front and rear fenders? Will 19x8.5" wheels fit on all 4 corners?
A: Offsets are 40mm for the 8.5" wheels and 45 for 9.5" wheels.
Your front fenders are technically "rolled" from the factory (like someone said, give it a feel and you'll see), the rear wheels REQUIRE rolling with the 9.5" width and we RECOMMEND it for the 8.5" rims. That being said, we have had a few customers just install drag bags and keep the pressure up which limits your suspension travel and keeps the wheel/tire from rising up and meeting the fender...we don't recommend this because if you ever lose pressure or catch the wheel on anything strong enough to jar the car, it will get past the drag bags and you can kiss your tires goodbye. Your choice, that's our recommendation.
The 8.5's are a close fit, but WILL work on all 4 corners which we have done for several customers. 9 out of 10 times, they will fit with no rubbing, and the other 1 time, you will get slight rubbing on bumps and sometimes turns...this is easily curable with some minor rolling or the addition of drag bags. The clearance is tight, but does fit as we have seen by our testing as well as customer experience.
Ok, well I think I got most of the questions answered here. If I missed anything or there are any new questions, feel free to ask! Post them up here, shoot us a PM or emial, or give us a call (10am-7pm M-F).
Thanks guys,
-Sean

Here's a few questions I missed the first time around...
As for the Ruff's, Top Shelf and Ruff Racing themselves are entirely out of stock of GTO fitted wheels...they WILL be back in stock in about a month or two, just in time for spring
Q: How many sets of the 19" Z-1's are left?
A: We have over 15 sets left for both staggered and un-staggered sets.
Q: Are the Z-15's coming back?
A: Yes! They should be in with the 18" Z-1's. We are not sure on exact sizing yet (18", 19" or both). We are also working with another wheel company on a Z-15 look-alike that will allow 18" staggered sets and look killer.
Q: Does the Top Shelf car have 19" Z-1's in the rear and 18's up front?
A: Yes and no. In some of the pictures we have an 18-19 staggered setup and in others it is only 18". We had gone to the 18-19" setup but it came down to customer service...when the last run of 19" Z-1's got low, we had one customer who wanted a 19" staggered set left out due to the remaining wheels only being 8.5"; we offered the rear wheels off of our own car for him to have and he accepted. So after that it went back to 18's. The 18's are now on TJ's car (as he tries to make it look like our shop car, haha! :D) and the shop car has moved to an 18-19" staggered set of Ruff 278's in hyperblack, running Bridgestone RE-01R's in 245/40/18 front and 275/30/19 rear. This change was made recently and we will be taking pics of the new setup soon.
Q: Will running an 18-19" staggered set affect my speedo or anything else?
A: The basic answer is NO. Now here is why: there is one key measurement that determines how your car responds to wheel size; that measurement is "rolling diameter" or "overall diameter", which is the addition of the diameter of your wheel plus the sidewall height (on both sides of the wheel). See pic:
http://www.discounttire.com/images/tireDiameter.gi f
This is easiest to figure out by plugging in your #'s to an online calculator such as this one: TIRE CALCULATOR (http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos ). When we change the wheel size from the stock dimensions, we also adjust the profile (or "sidewall height") of the tire, this allows you to maintain the same or as close as possible to the stock rolling diameter. Unless you make a change going to a larger than stock rolling diameter, such as a 275/35/19 your speedo will remain accurate (well, as accurate as it was with your stock wheels).
Here are some examples of rolling diameter:
STOCK 17's:
245/45/17 = 25.68"
AFTERMARKET 18's:
245/40/18 = 25.72"
275/35/18 = 25.58"
AFTERMARKET 19's:
245/35/19 = 25.50"
275/30/19 = 25.75"
So you can see where it matters, they are kept within 10th's if not hundredth's of an inch to stock sizing. The stock 18's actually are further off than this since they opted to run a 235!
This is all to explain it; you don't have to worry about the math because we take care of that for you. We know exactly what will work for you and set up our wheel options based on proper sizing.
Q:
Snafu-your post indicates your kits include chrome locking lugs. Does this mean one locker per wheel and four regular lugs per wheel?
A: No. Our kits come with full locking lug sets of 20. This means each lug has a pattern that requires use of the key for removal. Since the external shape is the "keyed" part, you don't get that ugly cookie-cutter shape on the face of the lug like some kits have. Below is a pic of our kit.

April.
   where did you hear that?
We don't have an exact date, but it should not be as late as April. I'm guessing that some yahoo that answers the phones just threw a month out there. The timeframe that was set when the order was placed, and should be met is Feb/March. I wish I knew an exact time but I don't.
For reference, if you call wheelmax, half the guys don't really know what's going on and will say anything to make a sale (farther in the future makes you more likely to buy something else now).
PMD GTO - I haven't had a chance to get some good pics yet. Maybe this weekend...I'll post them up when I take them. We have the side repeater kits in stock, and we might be able to do a test fit, shoot me an email and we can try to work it out.

Well, I didn't give an exact date. I was only going by the info. you gave me through various e-mails. I said WheelMax was expecting an April shipment date & you indicated, to me, that you will be receiving the wheels the same time as WheelMax, but can beat their price...so one can only assume...April. Feb/Mar was never mentioned by you, to me. And, yes the Wheelmax guys will say anything to make a sale in order for you to purchase something right then...like the Z-9's.
You have an e-mail reply concerning me being put on the list for the Z-1 purchase.

You know what, i don't know...But i think i'm about to change my mind...
At first I was skeptical, and wanted 18's so I could put DR's on the rear, then I thought to myself...I don't want to DD a DR, and beat the hell out of the wheels...So i'll just run an ET street or something on the stock wheels, and go with 19's...Where I am in life, I don't need to have a fast car, just want something that looks good :)
They do fill out the car much better than 18's, that's for sure...

I'll give you my reason-
I'm in the market for new tires, and told myself I won't put another set on the stock rims. So I guess I'm looking for rims as well. I'm going with 18's and probably 240-245 sidewalls all around, albeit 275 or wider in the rear for the look. I'm trying to preserve as much ride quality as I can. The shorter sidewalls necessary to fit 19's, especially in the street performance tires I'll be buying, will compromise that more than any benefit I'd get from 19's would be worth. As you know our roads around here aren't exactly smooth, and I don't like being hammered around any more than necessary. 18's will be a little less expensive too, tires and rims both.
That being said, Lisa, I think you've got one of the hottest packages I've seen.
EDIT-I was browsing and ran across this thread, in which Snafu himself suggests 18's are better for performance all around. If you're in it primarily for the look then 19's are certainly an option.

Hey Brazen,
Sorry if that came out the wrong way, I wasn't trying to be a jerk, I just never know what wheelmax has told people! We'd be glad to hook you up as soon as the 18's come in!
As for 18 vs 19", yes, 18's are going to give you a bit more flex and cushion with a larger sidewall. So if you want all out performance, I do usually suggest 18's. Now this is not to say 19's arent' going to hook...I have an 18" front 19" rear set on the shop car now with some sticky Bridgestone RE0-1R's on there that more than compensate for the size difference given a cheaper tire on the 18's. With tires, you get what you pay for--so yes, an RE0-1R on a 19" ought to be equal or outperform say a Toyo T1-R on an 18". I'm not going to lie though, I chose the setup due to aesthetics...an 18/19 combo complements the car nicely and balances the look IMO.
As for 275's in the rear, please keep in mind that while pleasing to the eye, it is done to give us a larger contact patch with the tire! Do you want your 400+hp landing on only 9" of tire, or helping it out a bit more with a 11"+ patch? We would (and have) gone wider than 275 but it becomes difficult to fit a wider tire on most wheels available (due to offset). We have run 285's successfully and encourage everyone to go with a staggered setup if possible...it will not throw off balance or handling...the only downside is no tire rotating...then again, most people's rears wear out faster than their fronts anyway :burnout: ;)
Hope that helps everyone out.
19's are still in stock, ready to move! :D
18's will be here soon!

Hey Guys,
Yes, I'm alive...I did have a rough time for a while there dealing with some long-term health issues  so I apologize to those of you who did not hear back immediately or had trouble reaching us.
Thanks guys,
-Sean

I have three questions regarding your aza wheels. First, would I have a rub problem in either the front or rear with 19"x8.5 un-staggared with 245/35/19 40mm offset T1-R tires or would it require 245/30/19 tires? Secondly, are these wheels hub centric or would they need hub rings? Lastly, what type of wheel weights do you use? Something nicer than standard cut off tape weights I hope.

Mike, I apologize if we've missed you, we certainly didn't mean to ignore you; we are working with everyone with issues from that batch and are putting together a list of those to be submitted for replacement under warranty--what this means for you is brand new wheels! Because the 18's are not in stock yet, we have been unable to complete this, but as soon as they come in, we'll get it taken care of. I've PM'd you also. Thanks!
SuperJett,
A 245/35/19 on all four corners with 19x8.5" 40et wheels will be ok--this keeps the stock rolling diameter. We have tested fitment and it is a close fit in the rear, but does work. We can't guarantee 100% that it will be perfect since these cars typically have a cradle alignment issue, but at worst you would have very slight rubbing only under extreme conditions--90% of our customers with this size setup have had zero problems. The T1-R's are helpful with fitment due to rounded shoulders.
The wheels are not hubcentric but we don't normally run hubcentric rings with them, here is why: as you should now, the hub/hubring is NOT a load-bearing; the centerbore of the wheel is 72.56mm and the gto's hub size is about 69.8mm, this leaves only 1.3mm variance all the way around the hub; since the variance is so small, the conical shape of the lugs does their job to seat the wheel perfectly centered when torqued down in a 5-star pattern (we always torque progressively, meaning going around the star pattern at 40ft/lb, then 60, 80, 100); we have tested these with and without hubcentric rings and have sold the vast majority without and results are the same. 98% of these type wheel owners (aza, ruff, etc.) do not run a hubcentric ring and have no problems. The only rings that will fit are custom made--CSiJason on this forum has them made; we used to carry some from him but no longer do. Wheel weights, are specific weighted stick on type...this is done because when balancing, the computer says where to put the weight for best balance--this is not only where on the circumference, but where within the width of the wheel; only stick on weights allow this and provide much better balancing. they are low-profile weights and to see them you have to be looking for them. We would never use a clamp on weight since not only is tacky and more easily thrown, and you sure as hell don't want to see them on the wheel, but balancing is not as precise. Hope that answers everything.

Why are these wheels so hard to find and get? A couple months for 18's? Does AZA only release a certain amount of wheels per year or is there a lack of materials to make them or.....??

I sent you two pms SNAFU, either way I can get them from you or wheelmax correct? Doesnt matter
Actually from my experience it does. Wheelmax service is non existant, while Sean will take the time to help you. Hell, Sean even knows more about what stock Wheelmax has etc.... than their own people do I have found.

Why are these wheels so hard to find and get? A couple months for 18's? Does AZA only release a certain amount of wheels per year or is there a lack of materials to make them or.....??
Maybe someone could give us some insight as to why these great wheels are so damn hard to get.
I believe they come from overseas, so maybe that adds to the time. T.J. at Top Shelf said something about never knowing how long the shipment will take to clear through customs. Don't know if that is it for sure, just a thought.

So, then you are one of the BOM owners who went with the Z-1's, but only in 19"s. I didn't know a lot of BOM owners were going with Z-1's whether they be 18" or 19"s. Instead of being 1 of 484, we'll be 1 of 4.84!!:gr_jest:

I'm still waiting for the AZA Z15's to come back.
As far as the 18's vs 19's its all relative to what you like. In my area i would prefer the 18's only because roads here are crap. I hit pot holes all the time. The more tire i have protecting the wheel hopefully it will raise my chances of not having damage. We had a work vehicle, Volvo S60 (aka hand me down from the owner), which bent 4 wheels in 2 years. I bent one of them myself. My co-worker even bought smaller 16" wheels for the car hoping they would be more durable. They lasted longer, but in the end they were the ones i bent lol.

I talked to Dale at wheelmax(who I am going to say has given me plenty of BS in the past dealing with the warranty issue) and he said they finally got word they will be here in 2-3 weeks from China(manufacturer was the hold up. So that being said should be here maybe first week of May..... or August ;)
