View Full Version : Nail Destroyed My Tire - What Should I Buy?

I posted this in the tire section too but was hoping to get some replies asap so I can tell my tire guy what to do. Long story short, 3 miles with 2 nails in the driver's side rear tire destroyed the inside of the tire. Needless to say, I now need to replace the tire. My hangup is if I should fork out the $ to buy the OEM replacement for 1 tire which my local tire shop is charging $249 for install and everything or spend another $50 or $75 and upgrade both rears to the same size but maybe the Goodyear Eagle F1s or something. I researched getting a wider tire, like a 255 or 265 and they are A LOT more money than the 235 size.
Any comments or opinions?
Should I just buy a Fuzion as a replacement instead of the OEM for like $150 installed?
I'm pretty pissed but need to get a new tire asap. Thanks for the help!

run the same brand designation on all four corners if you can, unless you go to the track all the time.
dont skimp on tires....tires is THE bottom line connection between your entire vehicle and how its going to perform....
my favorite example of that is... a guy goes out and buys a 225.00 tennis racket..then gets 10.00 nylon strings put in it. it plays like crap compared to the guy with the 100.00 tennis racket with the 20.00 synthetic gut strings in it.
kdw's are excellent tires...not the kdws..which is alright for "every day every season".....all the time... Goodyears are good tires, but overpriced, and over rated....the tread rubber tends to harden much quicker. with a higher ShoreA reading, you start to lose dry traction.

I was thinking the BF Goodrich G Force T/A KWD2 in a 265/35/18 for the rears. Any thoughts?
Do you think I'll have a rubbing problem with that width on my stock 18s?

wait I know the answer to this one.........its umm........umm...........TIRES, yes you should buy tires! :p
I've heard the Goodyear F1s are supposed to be the best all around performance. There's also a Catch22 with tires. You buy the expensive super sticky ones, pay a lot more for them, but the tread life is so bad because the compound is softer and thus you get more performance. What you need to ask yourself, do you want ultimate grip/performance or ultimate tread-life? Treadlife is going to cost less initially and in the long run, but if you do a lot of spirited driving, I'd suggest the softer compounds/lower tread-life tires. Here's an article of what the so called experts say. I notice there's no "gotta have it factor" with tires....

I wouldn't try going with a different sized tire with the strut rub issues our cars are known to have.

Yes you will. I'm running 245 40 18 kdw2's all around and i have about half an inch of space if i'm lucky. It isn't rubbing but if I went even a little bit bigger they'd be rubbing like mother****ers.
Also, the 245's are a lot, lot wider than the OE 245's.

The OEs are 235s not 245s. But I went with the Goodyear Eagle F1s instead of the KDW2s and only in the rears.

I have the Eagle F1's in a 275/40r17 on a 9" rim. A few people have commented to me that they looked wider than 275. Bases on that they may run wider than advertised. See if you can return them to the tire shop if they rub. They are an awesome tire though. I put down 430 whp and they grip very well. Good enough to go 1.9 60 ft times in the 1/4.

I did some research on the OEM vs. the F1s on tirerack.com and the F1s are only 0.3" wider. I HIGHLY doubt there will be any rubbing issues. Anybody have these tires in the 245/40/18 size that can let me know for sure?

Put the OEM tire on it until it is time to change em all.

Already bought the F1s. It was only a bit more for 2 F1s so I just bought a better tire. The OEMs are garbage and I will be buying 2 more F1s as soon as I start my new job. Guess what I'm splurging my first paycheck on:thumbs:

Greg,
What size/tires are those on the back? They look bigger than 245. What a great upgrade!

Yes, they are indeed 245/40/18. They are a bit wider than most 245s but they fit PERFECT. These are the tires that should've been mounted from the factory. I highly recommend them.
Thanks!

OK, just to make sure (I have to order new tires today)....
Goodyear Eagle F1s, 245/40/18 in the back.
Also, what do you plan to run up front? I take it these would rub against the strut in the front. I'd like 245/40/18's on all 4 corners, since I can rotate to front/back.
Thanks,
Eric

To be honest, I don't think that they will rub but I'm not 100% sure. If I were you I would do a forum search for 18" tire rub or something along those lines. Find out what other people have been able to run on the 18s with no rubbing issues. You can check out tirerack.com for the exact width of the whole tire, end to end, which I believe is a bit over 10" but don't quote me. They give you all of the specs so you can compare them to other tires people have run. Hope this helps. A little homework will save you a lot of time and $. Let me know what you find out.
