View Full Version : BMR Aluminum Skid Guard

BMR Fabrication
02-19-2004, 08:18 AM
We have just finished the first prototype on our heavy duty aluminum skid guards and they are currently in production now. The lightweight skid guard knocks almost 10 lbs. off the nose of the car. This mod is a safer alternative to removing the guard altogether since it still provides oil filter and pan protection.

These will sell for $109.95 retail and we are currently taking pre-orders at an introductory rate of $99.95 until March 31st.

NOTE: the image shown is the rough prototype, production pieces are much nicer. They will ship with a mylar protective coating to prevent scratches.

Larger images of the prototype can be seen on our website at http://www.bmrfabrication.com/GTO.htm

What else are you working on?

Two questions, do we have to worry about the aluminum not being strong enough and will we be able to tell any difference at all with the 10lbs. lighter? Is it just a matter of every little bit helps?

Other products we are working on for the GTO are subframe connectors, a driveshaft safety loop, a lighter chrome moly version of the rear fuel tank gaurd, a polyurethane differential mount upgrade, lowering springs, swaybars, and a tubular K-member. May also be developing heavy duty half shafts and driveshafts, more info on that later. All new products will be released on this board as they become available. :D

Move the halfshafts and driveshafts up on the list ;) I dont want to have to put that driveshaft loop to work if I dont have too!

You will never notice a 10 lb. loss however 10 pounds here and 10 pounds there eventually adds up. Every 100 lbs. weight loss is equivalent to adding 10HP when it comes to ET. 100 lbs. basically equals 1/10th. A lot of people on the forums were commenting on how heavy the factory skid gaurd is and some were contemplating removing them. This product is an alternative to that. Although it is aluminum, it is still 3/16" thick so you still get very good protection considering most cars don't even have any type of guard at all.

Agreed! I think we are already approaching the limitations of the stock driveshaft which is why we are developing the safety loop now. The rear pinion yoke is the only reason we don't have a driveshaft yet. We may end up having them cut from billet since nobody seems to make a u-joint version with the correct pinion splines.

Will most of those items be simple bolt-ons for us mechanically challenged?

Some will be bolt ons while others are weld-in only. The strut tower brace, aluminum skid guard, polyurethane differential mount, swaybars, tubular k-member, springs and fuel tank brace are all parts that will bolt into place where the OE unit(s) was.

Subframe Connectors should never be bolted in because of the torsional load placed on them. Constant twisting just ends up oblonging bolt holes and before you know it, your subframe connectors are nothing more than added weight. Needless to say, our subframe connectors will be weld-in. Pictures of our prototype set should be posted this weekend sometime.

The driveshaft safety loop unfortunately also must be welded in. Every other car we make loops for already has pre-existing mounting holes on the floorpan allowing bolt-in installation however the GTO has no such thing. The loop will be two piece, however, allowing it to be installed without removing the driveshaft.

Wow! Sounds like you're well on the way to fixing the now infamous "thunk" on hard acceleration that's been discussed at length here. The other products sound great too - all the products I've looked at on your website look very well-engineered and manufactured, as well as bulletproof. Keep up the great work for the GTO! :D

Ditto. I've got half a dozen busted halfshafts from my Aussie Holden, they are the weakest link and i'm sick of breaking them :(

I deeply resent the fact that BMR is producing so many fine after-market products for the 2004 Pontiac GTO. I have bills to pay and groceries to buy. How do I tell my son we can't eat this week because I MUST buy the aluminum skid plate for the Goat?

Ah, hell, I need to lose some weight anyway. :D

Keep 'em comin', BMR. We LOVE IT!!! :D

What do I need to do to get on the introductory price list for one of those guards?

We just installed one of these guards and a STB(Blue to match the car :D) from BMR on my dad's(GTOJOE) GTO. They are definately high quality pieces and are very easy to install. It would appear that BMR is setting the standard both in the performance area(11.44 @119) and the appearance area. Good job guys and I look forward to installing more of your parts on the GTO.

I am happy you guys are making some light weight parts for the GTO. I will be buying the skid guard the day I get my GTO. I also will want a Carbon fiber hood(painted), and some lighter weight wheels etc. Is the stock hood steel or aluminum? What about the driveshaft?

The stock hood is steel.

Wow! That means there is much weight to be saved by going to carbon fiber.

Hey There,

Do they come pre-painted or did you do it yourself or have it professionally done? I am really interested in getting one in Yellow Jacket.

Cheers!!!

Matt,

BMR will paint them for you for an extra $40 I think it is. I just installed mine this weekend. I got the navy blue color option to go with my impulse blue goat. They are really light compared to the stock skid guard.
good luck

Sweet, thanks for the information. Looks like I am going to be ordering one. :)
