Does anyone know the brand/color of paint that can be purchased to match the silver color on an 2006 OEM 18" wheel?
I have a minor scratch that goes through the clear coat - I want to wet sand it, paint the color in that area, then clear coat it.
Thanks.

Hey,
Just went throught this last week. 3 body shops told me these go through a sort or powdercoat/clear process. There is no local painting process like in days past. To "repair", body shops turn in a true (one that doesn't need straightening etc.) to companies that handle this process. Keystone in Richmond, Va does it here. You turn in your wheel and are given a replacement that has been fixed/repaired/refinished by them. Cost is usually 60-80 dollars or so. I don't know if they will fix your wheel and return your exact wheel. I guess it is very possible to locally refinish, but I would be afraid to repaint these locally as the color/texture would not match and the durability would not be the best. Let me know what you find out or how it works, I would like to know.

Read my post in the appearance section. I scratched up a stock 18" wheel.
I sanded it a little and sprayed on Duplicolor Stainless steel wheel finish (available at most auto stores).
The color is a dead on match and you can't even tell there were once scratches unless you are a couple inches away. Give it a shot.

Thanks ds - bought a can of it and a can of the clear at Meijer. For anyone else, it is dupli color wp101 - silver. I haven't tried it yet (just bought it). I'll let everyone know when I try it out.

I don't know if I'd use the clear. The paint itself looks perfect on the wheel- stock, I don't think there is clear. Applying the clear could make the repaired area look shinier than the rest.
I have used the clear on other parts (motorcyle) and didn't like it. The paint resisted solvents; the clear didn't.

Actually my 18" wheels ARE definitely clear coated. Once I shot the clear over the silver the match was almost exact.

The closest match for our stock paint on the wheels I have found and used is GM NG 501 "Galaxy Silver Metalic''. It's a perfect match. You can pick it up at Auto Zone, Pep Boys etc..

As far as I can tell, the wheels are clear coated. I think the problem a lot of time lies in these clearcoats you get in a can at a place like Autozone. I have used them once or twice and they just don't seem to match a professional clearcoat at all. When I brother did some paint work on his Thunderbird he got some clear from a DuPont store that was pretty expensive, but it seemed to work much better.

so which one is the best, WP101 silver or GM501 galaxy silver metallic? I have a nick on my rim I need to touch up so since these only come in sprays, I'm guessing I'm going to have to just spray it onto a little brush and dab it on?

+2 on GM NG 501 Galaxy Silver Metallic
I just touched up my 18's today, the Galaxy Silver Metallic was a great match. Now if I could only find a match for our red brake calipers!!! DOH!

How did you guys spray the paint on? I used some tape to mask off the tire and wheel, and I can see where the tape was! The above color is 100% match but I need to figure a way so you can't see the edges of the tape lol

Bumping this old thread with more details on the touch-up paint that someone requested.
The product is Dupli-Color Scratch Fix 2in1. It is a small bottle with a 2 in 1 applicator (Rollerball tip and Brush End). The Color is NG GM 501 Galaxy Silver Metallic. I picked up mine at AutoZone.
