I am getting some Nitto 555's (275) in the back and am thinking about 235's up front (no worry of strut rub). The 235's will be stock replacemnets. Anybody runing this setup; please show pics and share advice.

i have 275 M/t's on my stock 17's and they work perfectly and have worked fine for a while

In looking the M/T it state's they require a 9" wide rim, but do allow 1" max variance. So for that tire a 8" wide will work

A nitto 555R will fit on the stock wheels. They run narrow. It's been done. ;)

Since I'm just down the road from Mickey Thompson I emailed them to see if they were interested in producing a 17in wheel that we could use with their drag radials...they said no. However I also asked them what they though of using our 17 OEM wheel and I was told that they recommend no less then a 9 inch wheel. I think that's pretty clear. ...I'm currently looking for a 17x9 or 17x9.5 wheel that will work for us.

Nitto's require a 9.5" rim, but you can fit it on 9" to 11" safely, any narrower and your bending the sidewall to much and risk sidewall issues due to that.
It CAN be done, but it's not something that is considered safe

It's just not recommended with 275s but it sounds like plenty of people have done it.

Yes, a number of people have, but it's not really a good idea.
it's up there with wheel spacers,

I think it's safe to say that putting a 275 on the stock rims is basically a "Use at your own risk" matter. I just keep thinking that you have a nearly 11in wide tire going on an 8in wide rim. That's sucking the sidewall in 1.5 in on both sides. Maybe not that drastic but still is quite a bit for a tire with such short sidewalls.

So is 245 the "widest" we are supposed to put on our stockers. That would really suck.

"..not really a good idea...it's up there with wheel spacers.."
A clarification if I may, there's wheel spacers, and then there's hub centric wheels pscaers.
Running a car that is designed for hub centric wheels with wheels that are not hub centric, or running hub centric wheels with the wrong or missing ring, is the "not a good idea" scenario you mean to say about spacers.
Cheap wheel spacers could indeed be a bad thing on lug centric wheels tho'.
In the US we've got nothing to deal with like the tough German TUV vehicle safety regulations, and there are certain wheel and tire and car fitments that TUV will not approve WITHOUT proper hub centric spacers, of course on proper hub centric wheels. And fender rolling in some cases. You can bet if TUV approved it, it's more than OK, it's mil-spec or better!
'Course proper hub centric spacers might cost as much as good wheels.

Just keep in mind that a 275 nitto drag radial is roughly equivalent in actual width to a 255 or 265 of most other brands.
I've personally seen a 275 nitto on an 8" wheel and I can say that, although it's not technically recommended, according to tire and wheel manufacturers, It honestly does not appear to stress the sidewall really. Basically the tire "looks" completely normal on that size wheel.
I would agree with you that the recommended route is always BEST, but In this particular case, I've NEVER heard of any problems with a 275 nitto/8" wheel setup.

Safe. Why is everyone so "safe this, safe that." It seems that there is enough fear going around this pansi ass country. Why not go back to 55 MPH speed limits. I think I'd like the Germans. I'm running 315's with 30 PSI on that 8" rim. Only because I got them for $40. I'll be the test bed. If I spin it out due to tire roll I'll let everyone know. :burnout:

I hate to say this but back in the 60's and 70's we put our cheater slicks on a 5 inch wheel because it would give us a better tread bite. Needless to say we still do it on drag slick setups all the time.

275s (not the nittos...they run narrow) on a stock size wheel is stupid. Not only is it not safe, it won't perform as well. Your sidewalls will be rolling over like crazy during cornering. Not good for the tire OR for performance. There's a reason they recommend a 9" wide wheel minimum.

OK, people. Enough with the "not safe", "not recommended" stuff. We read that in the first 15 replies.
There are many people here running 275's on the rears on stock 17" rims. Shit, I have been running 275's out back for 18 or the 24 months I have had the car.
Driving any car is hazardous to your health so quit driving, it's not safe either.
I have no pics with the Nittos out back but here is one with 275/40/17 Fuzion ZR1's.

Looks good, but I'm not sure I want to chance it. I would like to run wider on the rear and go to a 235 in the front. Otherwise I'll be going 235/45ZR17 all around on the car when I order my tires this week. I checked and the 235/45ZR17 diameter is with .1inch in diameter from the stock 235/40ZR18s.

Dude, someone asked a question and I answered it.. get a grip!!
And just because you do, or others do, does not make it safe or right... When are people going to learn this?
Straight line? i.e. Dragstrip? Sure... no real issue... but on the road? No thanks.

I had 275/40/17 Nittos (stocker wheels) on my 415 rwhp 05 GTO. I drove the crap out of that car with those Nitto's and I had 0 issues. The tires seem to fit the rim fine and they looked great on the car.
As mentioned the 275 Nittos run smaller than most tires. The 275 Nitto DR's don't look any wider than my 245 series BFG KDW2s.

Hub Centric RINGS are NOT "spacers".
Ya think?
There are proper spacers for cars that need hub centric wheels.
The spacers are machined for an interference fit on the wheel hub,
and they have matching hub structure on their face that the wheel is an interference fit against.
The lug bolts are not supposed to be subjected to any lateral stress when using a proper hub centric wheel ,
and they are not subjected to any lateral stress when using proper hub centric spacers.

Hmm. I went 10.78 on a MT 275 DR on my stock 17" rims. I don't know how many passes I've made on them. I've also driven from Tampa to Jacksonville on the. I don't recommend them in the rain, but other than that no problems.

The way I see it, the tire issues are only because of the lip on the quarter.
With the lip cut back there is room for 11" of tire on the stock 17's.
Even with 10"s of wheel and the stock 48mm offset there is 1\8-1\4" clearance with the cut lip.
But even if you still have the lip there is room for a 9" wheel 48mm offset.
Is it impossible to get nice wheels with more than 50 mm offset??
