View Full Version : When do your KDW2's howl?

I've read quite a few posts about these tires having a noise problem, but lets get a little more specific...
Do yours howl in a specific speed range only, or get louder the faster you go?

I just put some KDW2s on my car Saturday. This morning I did notice a very slight howl or road noise at lower speeds. Once I got moving I really didn't notice anything. But I like to listen to the radio and I have a Corsa Sport Exhaust.

As they get worn down a little bit I would quess the noise will decrease. They almost look like 4x4 truck tires with those huge groove cut in them.

All I know is they stick like glue down here in S. Florida. This morning I nailed the gas from a dig (racing an Acura 3.2 TLs) and I got pretty much zero wheel spin. The stockers I had on last week would have gone up in smoke.

So I love the tires. But yes, they do make some noise.

Exactly what I was looking for.
Who else has KDW2's?

I do and I've never heard a howl.... but that may be because my car is too loud!!!

I have them on order will be installed Thursday.

I have had the KDW's (non 2's) on my last 2 vehicles, 96 Camaro Z28 SS and 2005 Dodge SRT-4.

You hear some road noise form them at arround 40ish. Then the faster you go the more you hear, I would never call it a howl. If I had the windows up in my Camaro I could not hear em even at 85mph. In the SRT which was not as sound dampened I could hear them some even at 85.

But as others have siad they stick like glue. Well worth a little noise IMHO.

Mine are not really loud at all, I really do not see what all the complaints are about. I cannot hear them over my Flowmaster system and it’s not overly loud at all….

Great tires BTW…

Coming home from work today driving in pretty think traffic I didn't notice any noise from the tires. I got the car up to about 70mph or so.

Then on a nice smooth road by my house I cruised about 45mph and didn't hear any noise at all from the tires.

So they are not that bad. You're going to really have to be listening for it (with the radio off without an after market exhaust) to hear any noise from the tires.

My stockers make a vibrating whooooo noise sometimes over certain pavement and low speeds.

I have about 5k on my set (245/40/18 all around). No complaints at all. Maybe they will get louder as they wear, but I have not noticed any additional road noise. I have nothing but good things to say about this tire.

was thinking of using the bfg kdw2's all around, with 235/40's up front & 255/40's in the rear.....(on stock 18's).....looking for better traction off the line, but without rubbing issues...any opinions???

I am assuming you are talking about the NT (new tread). The noise increases more as the as the tread lessens (like most tires). Also, if you are not good about rebalancing, rotating, air pressure checks, alignments, etc. it will only make it worse. Great with traction, but noisy.

On stock 18's or after market wider rims? Thanks.

I put KDW2s (NT) on my 97 Maxima to replace Michelin P/S A/S tires. Night and day with noise...the Michelins were quiet but didn't wear well while the BFGs brand new had the "howl" but seem to be wearing very well.

Personally, I like quieter tires. All Bridgestones I've owned have been quiet but none of them wore very well even with my wife driving who's easy on the cars. Just my $.02.

Mine only howled at about 30-40 mph up until about 10k miles and now they howl at all speeds but I've probably got about 19K on them and my car needs an alignment.

I have em love em and as far as I can tell no howl, but my exhaust to me is loud.

what kind of miles are expected out of these tires ? i know it depends a bit on what kind of driving you do, but i mean, in a GTO with these tires, i think everyone knows what kind of driving is intended.

Just put mine on about 3 days ago. I really don't notice any noise from them at all. But the awesome looks and performance can out weight this so called noise everybody talks about. I think their awesome tires and you wont regret them. I pick my staggered setup for $806 shipped from tire rack. If you run a stagger then obviously your rear's will be done way before the fronts. If you drive the goat how she likes. As far as treadwear rating I think it's a 300 or something like that, which puts it above the Goodyear F1 gsd3's, which I was thinking about getting.

Ok, here's why I asked...
I put my TSW Nogaros wrapped with 235/40 KDW's on saturday. My drive to work is about 35 miles of just highway and as soon as I hit 70mph I feel like I'm driving a truck with mud-terrains. Way too loud.
Below 70 isn't bad, but I can still hear it.
Hopefully these things will quiet down a bit as they "break in", but I'm not so sure. :(

In my experience they won't quiet down. Usually as tires wear the opposite happens and they get louder. The good news is as loud as the KDWs are, they most likely won't get much louder as they wear! :D :D

My only advice I guess is double check and make sure all the tire are going in the proper direction. Otherwise I don't know.

They are. I guess mine are just BFG Mud Terrain's.

I've had the KDW-NTs on my car for over a year now. When I first got them, I noticed a spike in the tire noise level between 30 and 40 mph. Higher speeds don't seem to be any noisier, but some road surfaces seem to be.

So do you guys think the KDW NT will be good for a daily driver? Most of the folks that complain about tire noise all own small econo cars like WRX, Focus, EVO, Civic, S2000 and etc. None of them are really known for a quite ride.
