I finally took the time to look through the "sedan" section over at LS1.com.au and saw some really awesome Commodores those guys have. These two really stood out in my mind because they are great examples of two factory wheel styles that I haven't seen on one US GTO yet... so here they are.
The first is my favorite, and I'm about 90% sure I'll be ordering a set of these 18"s and having them powdercoated gunmetal (like Lord Vador's gunmetal US factory 18"s).
It's amazing what one inch will do.

The second is a 19" that IMO looks better than any other Aussie 19" I've seen, yet I've never seen these on a GTO...

You are saying that the wheels in the first picture are NOT the 17" GTO wheels? Sure look like it to me. :sneaky:

They have 18" down under of our 17" stock wheels. The pictures he posted are of the 18" version.
IMO, you are paying a stupid amount of money for stock wheels. No one would know except you.

Wow, I didn't know that. Weird, they look exactly the same but 1" bigger. Weird I must say.

Yep, they're 18"s, and I hate to admit it, but I've always liked the stock wheels, but not in 17". I was hoping to go back to a more "factory" look, and when you put AZA's or Drift R's on, it's obvious that the car didn't come with them, and sometimes, it's obvious that the wheel wasn't designed for the car.
The factory 18"s are nice, but a little plain, and I think the stock wheels have a little more detail in the design.
At any rate, it's more or less just to post up pictures that they exist.

I too like the look of the 17s. I think you and I are the only ones.

I don't care for the stock wheels, but I'm not a fan of most "aftermarket" wheels for precisely the reason you mentioned: you can tell the car didn't come with them.
Hence the CV8-R's in my avatar (and soon, on my car)...

I like those too, but how much is shipping from AU?

just curious as to why you necessarily think that's a bad thing?

I think the top (stock GTO) design looks much better as an 18" wheel than a 17" wheel. Five spoke designs always seem to look better to me with longer spokes. I think those would look great on a GTO if you wanted to keep a stock appearance but as others have said, at what price? In the end, do what makes you happy as it's your ride!

I know, I know... I'm not going to do it anytime soon, but I miss the 5-spoke look, and my car is going in a different direction than I had originally planned. Going "down tone" with the Monaro front end, spoilerless, and VX tails makes the wheels look a little wild for the rest of the car. I'm thinking just plain Jane silver factory wheels in 18" might be perfect.
Also, I'm wanting to go back to 18"s because roadracing tires are cheaper in 18", and the 8.5" rear width will be easier to tuck with the lowered springs and the addition of a rear camber kit. Oh well, we'll see how it goes!

I can't remember what I paid - I think around $1300 - but I'd say $400-$500 of that was the DHL shipping from Australia...

I have to agreeee with the original post. The stock wheel design is sharp. I can't understand why they didn't come in 18" versions on my '05. If they had, I would not even get different rims, just better tires. It seems like some genius at BM figured it would be a cheap way to make a slight change for the '06 models which finally did come with 18's. Beancounters are pussies.
