View Full Version : Mickey Thompson's instead of Nitto's?

I am probably going to answer my own question, but I need to think out loud.

I got a flat in one of my Nitto 555r's. Limped home on the spare and got to discount tire where I have the road hazard coverage. They broke a stud putting the spare back on because they didn't have my tires in stock (they will pay for getting that fixed). They do, however, have the MT DR's in stock and offered to upgrade me. I wouldn't pay anything for the replacement tire under the road hazard and would pay for the tire on the other side (about to need to replace the Nitto anyways). They would be 275/40/17's, just like my Nitto's, but I understand they run a little wider, wear quicker, and do worse in the rain, while being a little "grippier". These tires will see a good amount of daily driving, so I'm thinking I should stick with the Nitto's (have them order some in). Anything I am missing or is my reasoning sound?

P.S. Stock 17" rims

I think that may be your key.. That is my problem when I kill this set of Nittos, I want more at the track but the track is 100+ miles away .

If you're daily driving them and weather is a concern, Mickey's are NOT your friend. Nittos are about the only drag radial you can DD in weather.

In terms of "stickyness", in my experience it's Nitto < BFG < Mickey.

In terms of "better in rain", it goes completely backwards.. Mickey < BFG < Nitto... with Nittos being the only really bearable one on the list. I've driven cars with all 3 tires on in weather and the BFGs were kept to 30 mph or so or below with Nittos being more of a leave yourself enough room but drive normally kind of thing, unless they get low on tread. Then they suck obviously.

Mickey is the best for the track nitto is the best for the street my cousin hit the wall coming back from the track in very light rain mickeys are street legal but by no means street worthy unless you plan to drive in a straight line on dry roads

That's what I decided. I had discount tire order 2 more of the Nitto 555r's. Now I have a problem with my wheel studs. Apparently one seized up after they took 2 or 3 of them, then broke a stud putting one back on. Then I took it to get the stubborn nut/stud broken free (driving on 4 studs), and they schmucks broke the stud, then realized they didn't have the correct studs available. So I get a ride to look around and can't find anything locally(even at 3 GM dealerships), so I'm down to 3 studs on a spare tire. Been working, so I haven't had a chance to get all of this resolved, GTO sits in the parking lot at my apartment, all humbled by a tiny tire on the back and only 3 wheel studs. Gonna replace them all now, just in case they have been compromised.

So if you get a flat, don't use the manufacturer supplied spare tire? Didn't know there was a problem with that. Can you explain?
