Ok, I'm looking for the BEST street tire to replace my stock (crappy) 245/45/17 BFG KDWS and pretty much think the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3 are it. My GTO will never see snow or ice and very little rain. The price is spendy but i'll probably only put a few thousand miles a year on it. I like the stock look so i'll be keeping the stock wheels and size, I just need traction! What's the thoughts on these tires?
PS. It looks like i'll be waiting til there strike is over for availability!

Availability is indeed a problem. I have been extremely impressed with them in just the short time I've had them. Coming from a set of Nitto 555's, there is simply no comparison between the two.

Those are great tires - one of the best, but take a look at the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 - That is an amazing tire. Both are very close, but i know a number of folks that prefer the Michelin over the Goodyear.
Both tires you cant go wrong with, I think.
Also, good for you to put a proper high performance tire on your car! These cars have such crap stockers on - it's embarrassing.

Tire Rack has them in stock (in 245/40/18 size), for $197/tire:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=G oodyear&tireModel=Eagle+F1+GS-D3&partnum=44YR8F1GSD3&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=0
I didn't check the 235/40/18 size since I understand the 245's generally fit...
Edit: just saw the 235's won't be in until 5/15 (and are $206/tire)...

They are Super Tires. I'm on my second set - the first set lasted around 32,000 with rotations every 6,000 . They do ride hard when you start out , but warm them up and they allow you to carve to your heart's content. The handling and traction plus the excellent wet weather traction are what I look for in my GTO tires and the GS D3's fit that bill to a T. They are expensive and like most Tires these days you can get an out of round one occasionally - (reason to buy locally vs. online) , be sure to have them road-force balanced and bring the online price to your Goodyear store and they should get close in price. I also really like the thread pattern and the sound they make on the 1-2 hard shift squeel. On overly aggressive moves their limit is rarely reached and when it is they respond to the slide smoothly...IMHO the GY GS-D3 will provide your Tire needs in both wet/dry traction ; triple digit "dory" handling ; and 30 over posted cornering.

LOOK AT THE BRIDESTONE RE01-R, I JUST GOT EM AND THEY ROCK! THEY GRIP WAY BETTER THAN THE GOODYEARS AND THE MICH. PS2'S. THERE IS SLIGHTLY MORE RIDE HARSHNESS THOUGH. THE STIFFENED SIDEWALL IS THE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. STEERING RESPONSE IS RAZOR SHARP THOUGH.

Treadwear absolutely sucks on the Bridgestone. If you don't mind paying $$$ to replace your tires ever 10-15k miles, they are pretty good tires.

Would you say the GS D3's squeal a LOT less on the 1-2 shift than stockers? I'm going to need tires soon and also sick of never having traction when I go WOT in 1st and 2nd. Currently at 388/392 at wheels with stock 17" tires/M6.

I wouldn't say the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3 squeals at all if I need to take off fast.
...and DO NOT buy them from Tire Rack. Get the Tire Rack price and take it to a local Goodyear store and let them match it. You'll get a better quality tire. Not all tires of the same kind are made equal.

I was thinking about either the GY Eagles or the PS2, but I want a Ultra High Performance tire that is designed just for summer that maybe isn't the greatest for wet traction as it will most likely never be driven in the rain. Something with bigger tread blocks like the Yokohama.

I went cheap and bought the general Exclaim UHP. they grip great for turning, better launch grip but not like nitto DR's.
At 107 per tire, mounted and balanced, I can afford to smoke the rears

I DON'T KNOW IF YOU SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE ON THIS ACTUAL TIRE, BUT IT SUPRISED ME ON HOW WELL IT'S WEARING. IT WOUDN'T SUPRISE ME IF IT LAST'S AS LONG OR LONGER THAN THE PS2 OR F1...
THOSE OF YOU CONSIDERING THE YOKOHAMA ABOVE, IT'S A NOISY TIRE COMPARED TO THE REO1R.
THE MICHELIN SEEM LIKE IT HAS THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS (INCLUDING BEING LIGHTER THAN MOST). IT'S NOT THE STICKIEST THOUGH.

the bridgestones are alot softer and I suspect will corner better. Personally I'm going re01r next.

I would definatly buy the tires locally and agree to bring the tirerack quote with me. Sooo will the Goodyears get me off the line with minimal or no tire spin if I was to need to beat up the car next to me?
Thanks All!!

ACTUALLY, THEY AREN'T THAT SOFT... THE HIGHER END YOKS ARE WAY SOFTER FEELING TO THE FINGER. THEY DO GET SOFT AS SOON AS YOU GIVE EM SOME HEAT THOUGH. GOOD LUCK, YOU'LL LOVE EM. NOW IF WE COULD GET BRIDGESTONE TO MAKE MORE SIZES FOR US, LIKE A 265 FOR THE FRONT.

THAT IS A QUESTION WITH NO REAL ANSWER. IT DEPENDS ON YOUR MODS, YOUR FOOT, ROAD COMP., TEMP, ETC...... YOU WILL HAVE A HAIR MORE GRIP WITH THE MICHELINS AND A LOT MORE WITH THE REO1'S
IN OTHER WORDS, IF YOU TOOK 2 GOATS EXACTLY LIKE MINE, THE DIFFERENE BEING THE TIRES ONLY; YOU'D GET SMKD OFF THE LINE. ESPECIALLY IN THE 1-2 SHIFT.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN THE TIRE?
Different tire outlets will take different quality tires. Tires are checked in the manufacturing plants by running them through uniformity machines that measure the tire for specific quality tolerances. Some, like certain auto manufacturers will only take the very best tires as determined by this process while others like big volume discount tire outlets will take anything that basically rolls including tires that have been repaired in the plant during the manufacturing process. The worst of the worst tires are sent outside the US where the roads are so bad it really doesn't matter.

I wrote plant automation systems for Michelin a few years back. My specific software interfaced with the uniformity machines to collect the quality results. That's why I know that each tire outlet specified to Michelin the quality tolerances that they would accept on each tire that they sold. I'n not sure what quality tire the small chains and mom & pop tire stores get though. I do know not to buy from Sam's Club though. Michelin did 100% testing...meaning every tire was tested and quality determined. Don't know about other manufactures. they may only run a certain % of tires in each batch through the uniformity machines.

I'm thinking i'd better do a little more research on the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R. I doubt if i'll put more then five thousand miles per year so if I could get 15000 out of them it would be cool. My main goal is off the line traction without going to street slicks..

The GS D3's "sliding traction" that the stockers showed alot of is no longer present. The squeal I mention on the 1-2 shift is quick and loud - a kinda high pitched bark without traction loss. I have revised my suspension , so that does help on WOT traction situations , but the GS D3's allow the "impress the slower car next to you" 1-2 squeel without the squirrly loss of traction I could invoke with the stock tires...

I have 17" G3d3s...real good in the dry and wet. Noisy on concrete. Very stiff and slippery cold. I have about 20k on them....and the got about 10k left in them. At $800 mounted and balanced from the local GY dealer. I am still trying to figure out..if these are worth the money

I have the 17" GS D3's and have no complaints, just praise. World of difference over the stock BFG's. Stick well once warmed up, good in the rain, and look really aggressive.

THESE APPEAR TO LAST THE 10-20K (DEPENDING ON CONDITIONS) MARKER.... YOU CAN GO WITH A FULL OUT DOT RACE TIRE AND GET SLIGHTLY BETTER TRACTION BUT END UP WITH ABOUT 5-10K MILES OUT OF EM..

I have had these on my Camaro for 30k and just bought them for my GTO. Without a doubt the best tire next to the Michelin PS2 for less cash. Great traction wet or dry. You will not be disappointed.
Good Luck!

Just mounted up a fresh set of 17" Bridgestone Potenza RE750's to replace my stock BFG's. I got about 15,000 good miles out of those, but the Goat's alignment was out of spec on the right front and it wore down the inside edges, which started giving me some vibration in the steering wheel at higher speeds. If it had been aligned early enough I probably could have gotten another 5k out of them, since the tread block still had life in it.
Obviously I can't comment on wear, but the ride quality and noise level of the Potenza is markedly improved over the stockers. It's like a different car. Here's a link to the tire's owner survey results at tire rack. I'm in Florida so I'm OK with a pure summer tire.

I have had 2 sets of the F1 GS-D3 Goodyears of different sizes although they were for smaller cars (215/45-17 & 235/40-17). They both were amazing in wet/dry situations and it appears from comparisons that they also perform well in the wider sizes too. It'd be hard to recommend something else!

Ok - all of you talking about 20-30k miles on these soft tires - how would that compare to the stock tire life? Mine were gone at 25k - having been rotated at about ever 7.5k. I'm shopping to replace the snow tires and am looking for something that hopefully will last as long as the stock tires - but obviously I have somewhat of a lead foot to have gone through the hard stock tires this quickly.

Nothing touches the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R
Treadwear rating of 140 sucks but they are affordable tires (155 each from tirerack.com). I daily drive them and they completely transform the car from the shitty stock rubber. I've had them for about 4k miles and I'm completely happy with them...handled themselves great on a road course and civil enough for daily driving.
An absolutely phenomenal tire.
I also considered the GSD3 F1 as well as the BFG KD (another great tire) and the Falken 651
Are the Goodyears quieter than the BFG KDW NTs.

I just put 245 40 18s on the back wheels, and they have made a world of difference. Even at such a small size, I have noiceably more traction and stabitlity. Also they look just plain mean. When the fronts wear out I'll buy some gsd3s for them too. only 10000 miles on the stock back tires Ill be more careful with these:gears: :burnout:
