Hey, I read on here about the FRCs rubbing the fuel rail supply lines. I washed the car today and did the normal checking oil and other fluids. Also decided to pop off the FRCs. I couldn't remember what side so I took off both. On the driver's side this is what I found:

Here are close-ups of the two areas in the arrows:
First area closest to the front of the car:

The one towards the rear of the car... more concerned about this one:

What do you all recommend as my course of action? For now the FRCs are taken off the car until I know how to resolve this.

I think I'll leave them off and when I get around to it I'm going to try this approach

pretty sure there is a service notification out there for this, I would take it to the dealership and get it fixed. Even if you are out of warranty, they will still fix it if there is a service memo on it.

I took info to Dealer @ 8k mi including photo of car burnt to ground they said never heard of such a thing. They replaced line with new for free and wrote it up as damaged. Then I bent mettle line so wont rub on FRC. They would not do that and would have just done same thing. You can cut away FRC too.

I took mine to the dealer and got them to put on the 2005 fuel line under warranty. They were not happy about it, but they eventually agreed to do it. The 2005 line fits perfectly and does not contact anything.

I'll have to check that out. I bought the car used and got an extended GM warranty on it until 91K. I keep forgetting that the factory one is still good to 61k w/ no deductibles.

They should also change the FRC, the cutout got bigger in '05, think they saw this problem, too?

i doubt they saw it. if they did it'd piss me off since this is a "gm certified" vehicle.
I think that title was just thrown on it. I haven't had very good occurances with the dealership I bought the car from. I'll find a more upstanding one and take it there.

just do what i did! take the cover off and grind off about a 1/8th inch and it will never touch again. after you get the line replaced by the dealer you will never have any rub again. i don't!!! easy fix. and there is plenty of area to grind off without makeing the cover look bad.

Replace the line and keep the FRCs off...they serve no purpose.

You're right. You know I think I'll put them back on the car would look much better engulfed in flames.
If you like them so much keep them in your trunk for whenever you go to shows or what to show them off. Personally I like the looks of my engine, don't like trapping excess heat and fixed or not (mine's fixed) I don't want to risk my fuel line being cut by plastic covers no one will ever see unless the hood is open.

Take about a two inch long slighty larger dia. piece of rubber hose. Cut the hose so you can open it up. Place the cut hose over the area where it is rubbing the FRC. Use one or two wire tires to hold in place. Put your covers back on and you are done. Did mine that way the day I brought the car home. I would take a picture but I am at work. I am sure someone on the forum has done this same thing and has a picture.

i am sure that they put them on for looks. if a person like the way the engine looks with them off, then great. i don't!!!

yea I'd like to put them back on my car as well. I think i'm going to go the rubber route. I'll go to Home Depot or Lowes and look for rubber "tape" and wrap it around those spots and see how that holds up.
I'm going on a 1200 mile trip back home in a week and a half, i'll leave them off for that though.

Add me to the list of GTO's with fuel line rubbing. I took the cover off the right side and I'll keep it off and go to the dealer.

It's amazing that GM has not issued a TSB for the fuel line rubbing problem. Maybe they think a TSB admits fault (responsibility for the burned down GTO's?)?
I'm bringing mine in tomorrow for the last set of problems, including the fuel line rubbing, while it is still under warranty.

After reading about this common problem on here (The greatest info board ever), I took mine off and I noticed a slight rub mark. I did what YJFever did- ground some of the radius so it didn't rub any more.
I did see a few pic.s of gtos on fire awhile back. Hmm, you'd think that Pontiac would voluntarily contact us and Quick fix it.

Buy the Russell Fuel rail fittings #640850, and make up the remainder of the line your self, I used Aeroquip Starlight Hose, and a 45 degree, and 90 hose end fittings. Looks good now all I need to do is the install

They are useful to hold bolts in while working on the car, but ya, that's about it :D

Took Goat into my local dealer Wednesday for the last of my warranty items. Fuel line rubbing problem was not fixed. My complaint was "Fuel Line Rubs Engine Cover" and it was on the the service write-up receipt they gave me. The problem description got changed to "Fuel Line Rubs Wiring Harness". Their fix was to reroute wiring harness behind the power brake vacuum hose but not to order a replacement fuel line. I talked with the Service Manager when I picked up the car today. He said there is a "Service Memo" to reroute the wiring harness to the other side of the vacuum line power brake hose to the master cylinder. This prevents the fuel line from rubbing the wiring harness at the firewall but actually allows the fuel line to now rub even harder on the right side of the engine cover cutout.
The service manager finally agreed to order a new fuel line after I popped off the engine cover and showed him the damaged fuel line hose. He said it was a "miscommunication". Hmmmmmmm...
Of the 6 warranty issues I brought the car in for, only 2 were fixed. I love my GTO but I hate bringing it in for service. When is GM ever going to figure out that service is just as important as the product and the sale?

I just ran across this thread....took my driver side cover off and there it was...geesh....these cars are sooooo consistent...:)
anyway, my fix: out came the dremmel tool....ground out another 1/8th inch clearance then smoothed the edge nicely....these covers have a "parting line" which is what is doing the damage...parting line is like a knife edge....
then i taped the area in questtion....no problem now....
