I ordered 4 245/45ZR-17 Sumitomo HTR Z which I believe are the same size tires that came stock on my GTO. They called my house and said that are not shipping my order unless I contact them.
So I called tirerack and they said my order was flag by a tech because of fit. I asked to talk with a tire tech and he told me that the tires I ordered might rub!! I asked him if they sold any tires that would not rub and he said no. He said that even the 18's have rubbed.
If a major tire seller like tirerack knows of a problem ( and I believe that them flagging my order was just to cover thier butts legally) why would pontiac??

:search: strut rub
when you realize that the rubbing is from failing bushings from the boat ride, not something that could be pridicted in my opinion, you will have your answer.
and the GTO is not new anymore so why would a tire company put themselves into a situation like that and only make them look bad.

I ordered a set of Kuhmo tires from them a while back for my T/A and they were only H speed rated or something...but they called and said I need a Z-speed rated tire on my car, and I told them, I don't plan on driving 145+ mph, so the H speed rated ones will work just fine.
They are just doing it to make sure you can't hold them liable and say they didn't tell you.

just don't list what kind of car they are for and they won't bother you.

I think you have to give the type of car...I ordered my tires based on size and never put a car in, but when I went to pay it required me to list what vehicle they were going on before I could actually pay for them...at least that is what I remember, maybe it is different now.

I was wondering about that for the GTO. If your GTO is a daily driver, what are the pitfalls in going with an H-speed rated tire rather than a Z-speed rated tire?

When I needed a replacement for a RE040, I ended up having to get it from Tire Rack because even the local tire shops said they couldn't get it, that it didn't show up in their system as an available tire. I remember when I ordered just the one tire, the site would not even let me check out until I marked what car it would be going on.

wow, i can't believe this actually upsets some of you.
first, they're not going to NOT sell you the tire.
second, for all the issues GTOs have with strut rub, how can you find this service to be a bother? would you NOT be pissed off to buy brand new tires from an online vendor, wait for shipping, pay for install, and get on the road only to find out your new tire is too wide? i think you would, and i KNOW the FIRST thing you would do is get on here and start a post about how you don't understand why your new tires cause strut rub where your old ones didn't, even though the tire size is exactly the same.
TireRack has taken the time to listen to customer feedback as well as test an insane combination of wheels, tires, and vehicles so that you'll KNOW you have no problems with the items you're ordering. that's more than you can say for just about any other online tire vendor out there.
so, bitch if you want. personally, if TireRack were to call me and say 'hey, just FYI, we have some experience with this tire on your vehicle and have a feeling it's gonna be a problem,' my first reaction would probably be to thank them and ask for their recommendation rather than get butthurt that some company that actually does this FOR A LIVING has the 'audacity' to second-guess me.

They told me they do not sell a tire (any size) that might not rub.
Maybe its the car??

Yes it's the car. They're aware of the strut rub issue. If I kept my 17"s I was going to to go 235/45ZR17s.

I ran the exact combo on my car like you have same tire and size with no rubbing, however the stock BFG's did strut rub. So you should be fine.

maybe it is just an error in their computer system-
did anyone get proof that it was a defective vehicle/strut rub that was the issue?
it lets you view the tires and is a recommended size for the GTO on their website...

Does going to this slighty less wide and slightly smaller diameter tire make that much of a different with regards to strut rub? Will this tire fit on the GTO stock 17" rim? Would there be some loss in cornering stability with the smaller tire?
If my calculations are correct, the 235/45R17 is about 1.4% smaller in diameter than the 245/45R17. That would seem to indicate that at a calibrated 65 mph, the car would be going about 64.1 mph on the smaller tires. Is that correct?

Well, the speedometer is slightly off anyway and if you use a tire size calculator, it will show you that 235/45ZR17 is only .1 inch shorter than the stock 235/40ZR18s.

I ordered my KDW2 245-40-18 from them online. In about 15 minutes they called me and told me it was an "aggressive fitment". I told them I'll make them fit, they said no problem and shipped them out. I thought it was nice of them to call, though lol

I also ordered from them in the past, I was putting 20's on a 2002 Silverado that was bagged. They called me and said that the tires wouldn't support the weight of the truck and they wouldn't let me buy from them. I spoke to the manager and he still wouldn't let me buy even when I said that I would take all responsibility for the issue. So what I did was to wait 3 days and called back and ordered the same tires for a s10. They never knew what happened and I got the tires anyway!

Strut rub is a big known issue with GTOs. At one time, one of us maintained a list of "eligible" tires to replace the OEM Goodrich KDWs that stayed about as narrow (a search will find it). I had a blowout + one seriously worn tire a few months ago, and none of the "eligible" tires were available here in Seattle for days, so I went with 245 45 Nexens. I was one of the lucky ones who did NOT have strut rubbing with the stock Goodriches; however, the same-sized Nexens snugged up tight against the strut on both sides as soon as they were mounted. I found a 3mm spacer locally to relieve the rub. The fitment problem is known by some of the bigger tire dealers.
BTW, the Nexens are SOFT (not sharp in response), but eliminated all of the road-buzzes in my interior. In a nutshell, "quiet".

Just bought from them last week, and not stock size tires. No issues at all, and the best price I could find. Great customer service. They even called me after I ordered to let me know they have a warehouse close by me and let me pick them up, saved me $20 on shipping!

LOL. That reminds me of someone I knew that had a Civic. The tire blew on the highway, so he pulled off to the side of the road, had a friend put on the spare tire and drove to a tire place to get a new tire...but, HE LEFT the wheel/tire on the side of the highway thinking that a new wheel came with the tire. Sadly enough, he was a coworker of mine; his first car, and knew nothing about vehicle parts - it was rather hilarious when he came back to the shop and said he needed to go to the Honda dealership to get a new wheel. The trip back to the highway yieled nothing; someone had taken it.
