View Full Version : SSR Type C RS...Just Purchaced

I just bought new SSR Type C RS wheels to use when racing. A pair of 17x8.5 5x120mm +44mm for the back and a pair of 17x8 5x120mm +40 for the front.... and they only weigh 16.5 lbs.

<<< Pictures on car added, post #40 >>>

http://www.tirerack.com/images/wheels/ssr/swap/ssr _typec_rs_anth_ci3_l.jpg

On the the rear I'm mounting MT ET 275/45/17 Street DRs and the front will have 235/45/17 F1 DS-G3. I'm dropped 1 inch in the front and my current 245/45 F1s were just a little to wide.

Now the big question: The SSR decals in the picture don't come on the wheels when you get them. I don't know if I should put them on or leave them off. What do you guys think On or Off?

I am kinda on the fence on this one. Coming from an import background, I kinda like a small decal on SOME rims.

I vote to put them on drive around for a few days, see if YOU like em, if not pull them off!

Oh yea and post some pictures.

They're BMW wheels so I wonder if the Bimmer guys put them on or not.

I'll put up pics once my F1s come in and are mounted. Also have to wait for the SSR caps ... they shipped BMW ones even though they marked on the invoice that I specified the SSR ones.

I wasn't really looking for cosmetics, just lightweight for racing, but I figured I could chrome them if I wanted to use them later for daily driver duty.

300 Series BMWs run autocross using these and they outweight us by 500 lbs so there should be no problem there.

And to answer your question specifically:

In a specialized process perfected by Alumax, a leading aluminum manufacturer, uniquely structured alloy billets are heated to a semi-solid state (the consistency of soft butter) and molded in a specifically engineered forging press. The positive aspects of this process found applications in the aircraft and automotive sectors. Through an exclusive contract with Alumax, SSR conducted additional research and development and built their wheel manufacturing plant in Japan to produce alloy wheels using Semi-Solid Forging (SSF) technology. They further developed SSF technology, were granted a patent, and are the first and only SSF wheel manufacturer in the world today producing Semi-Solid Forged alloy wheels. This ultra high tech forging technology creates a very strong and lightweight wheel ideal for street or track.

Ah. Wait. LOL Are you saying a 3-series weighs 500lbs more than a GTO?

"Off" will look cleaner. Stickers on the wheels is more of a tuner thing. Nice choice of a functional lightweight wheel, they should help your acceleration. I've seen a ratio of 8.9:1 for the effectiveness of removing unsprung weight versus removing sprung weight, you just dropped about 38 lbs from the wheels, equivalent to pulling 338 lbs from the body. Or so the theory goes - read it on this here forum!

Ok, so you're looking at Gross Vehicle Weight rating... not curb weight. A 2006 BMW 325i is over 400 pounds lighter than a GTO.

LOL thats what I get for only googling one source...that source didn't specify what the weight type was. ya your right the curb weight is about 300 lbs lighter then me. Either case the wheels I would think should handle the BMW GVW.

Good choice!

1. Did you mount your MT's on the 17x8.5 yet? If so, how did they fit?
2. Any pic's?
3. When do you plan to Test them at the Drag Strip?
4. Have you found the right size Lug Nuts yet?
5. No Decals, but that's a personal choice. Advertise if your paid to do so (LOL)

If I recall correctly...... the 17x4 Spare Tire Rim is approx 14lbs or less. Might want to consider using them at the Drag Strip with M&H Front Runner/Skinnie (Bias-ply)

Light weight 17 is very interesting and tempting, even if it is somewhat costly. This would also allow Up-Grading to a bigger Brake Pkg.

The MTs fit fine on the wheels but I'm going to roll the fenders so no test until I do that. I'm picking up the fronts 17x8s with 235/45/17 F1 DS-G3s on them today so I'll put them on the car and take some pics. For lugs I just need to drive down to Summit Racing this weekend and find some.

Looks like you have good clearance in the rear with the 5/16 Raise...... why do you think you'll have to roll them?

Mainly because others that have the 5/16 with the MTs have posted that they needed to. ...sounds like a good new thread topic to find out.

Did you find the correct Lug size?

Thread necromancy thanks to Search option.

I am getting SSRs as well. Is there a reason why people are downsizing their front tires from 245s to 235s? I kinda want to keep as much front grip as possible for the corners, so I'd like to keep the 245s on up front. I'm not lowered, if that helps any.

Also, any update on where to get the correct lugnuts? I'm interested in getting some lightweight red ones from this place (http://www.importparts.com/shop/index.php?cPath=1 900_1903&osCsid=321b63894fa0cd269db7a6c4c99e6ea1), but there are different sizes. Which size is ours?

ShelbyGoat
10-08-2007, 01:55 PM
some go to 235 because of strut rub

can't think of the lug size right now...also just a heads up, you can only order 16 from that website (as far as what is showing)

I'm going with the SSRs that are 17x8s with the +40 offset for the BMWs. Do I need to worry about strut rub with 245s? Another reason I'm wanting 245s is because General Tire (really lightweight tires and very quiet for cruising) doesn't make the 235s that others have used, and... I still want to keep the front grip.

Older's setup with 275s all around is awesome, but I really want to stick with the 17x8 and 17x8.5 sized wheels (I don't like big diameter rims). Thanks for the help guys. I'm so looking forward to getting these wheels.

my SSRs are 19s(18lbs) and I was able to use the stock lug nuts with no problem(with a thinwall socket). I did order some titanium lugs though because I like to waste money(and do anything to reduce unsprung weight)

You wont have strut rub with 245s. The stock 17s come with 245s and no aftermarket wheels put the tires as close to the strut as stock/holden wheels.
