Melted/torn dust boots on front caliper pistons... PROBLEM???

I have stock brakes on my 05, so they're the PBR 2-piston calipers. I road raced recently using Hawk DTC-70 pads in the front, which are the grippiest track pads that Hawk makes. The calipers got really hot, considering I baked the bright red factory paint on the calipers black. Last night, I swapped the track pads back to stock pads for street use, and I noticed that the rubber dust boots that are supposed to cover the pistons are gone. All that's left is a bit of the melted and torn remains of the boots. So, I have two questions:

1. Can I continue to safely operate my car with no dust boots? Can I go back to the track without dust boots? Will it damage the calipers or get dust in the brake system?

2. How do I go about replacing the dust boots? Any idea how to get the dealer to replace under warranty? I don't know how to approach this issue.

Thanks in advance for any responses. Here's the only thread I found on the topic, but the importance of dust boots wasn't discussed: http://www.ls2gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41838&highlight=brake+piston+boot

I found another thread on the topic over at Corvette Forums (I'm still confused!): http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1691750&highlight=dust+boot

Same thing happened to me, dealer laughed at me when I asked them to replace them. For now im just running with one caliper with one boots, and try to keep the car clean. Im still running stock calipers so I dont really care. If they get janky, ill replace them.

The boot is there to keep dust out so as long as you keep them clean your fine.

You can rebuild the caliper if you wish but they will just burn off again.

Also the Wilwood at one time didn't have boots either. I think they do know though.

I would replace the boot, eventually that crap will find its way into your brake system. You may be able to get a rebuild kit cheaply and possibly even find a higher temp boot kit.

Living in IL, you'll want to have boots come winter time to prevent corrosion in the bore of the caliper.

Sorry for the hijack, does the Harrop BBK have dust boots?

To answer the Harrop ?. Yes they do have dust boots.

On the other part. You need those bots to keep all contaminates off the pistons. Water will rust the pistons. You will never be able to keep the pistons clean all the time. Unless you don't drive your car.

Another big issue with your problem. If you got the brakes that hot, you got the fluid just as hot. The fluid is full of dirt and contaminates that will eat the seals out of the calipers.

I hate to tell you, but it is olny a short matter of time before you spring a leak. Your talking about brakes, do it right!!
