View Full Version : Looked at my exhaust. LS2 headers != LS1 headers?

I know at least one person here has already done headers on an LS2 GTO but that person also went with a fully custom exhaust as well. My point is, it doesnt look as if the headers fit the same to the 05's exhaust as they do on 04's. Anyone know if they bolt up to the stock 05 exhaust?

And THAT person is very, very sexy. Anyways, LT headers will bolt to the heads, w/no issues (same ports as LS1), but WILL NOT fit the rest of the system. Several reasons; LTs dump beyond the rack, wheras the OEM cat inlets are forward of the rack, LT collectors are larger in diam than OEM cat inlet flange. On the LS2, the cats were moved closer to the engine as well. Install your headers/cats, then drive over to an exhaust shop, all the while sporting an open-header SEG :)

ROFL's!

My thoughts are this... The collectors / cat-pipes dont mate up to the factory exhaust correct? Looking at the odd flange that mates the factory cat pipes to the 'crossover resonator', i'm thinking they will have to make a short pipe that bolts up to the factory resonator and then have the cat-pipes bolt up to their own flanges on that.

Saddly, their are no muffler shops close enough to my home to risk that sort of drive. haha, but that'd be funny to explain to the 6 officers that meet me on the way there. "But officer, I'm on my way to the exhaust shop to fix the problem!" Which reminds me of the time I did a 0-120mph blast on the bridge heading out of town just a block away from my house in my then supercharged Honda with an open header. Man did that thing roar! None the less, clear across town a cop spotted me (like a mile away, probably heard me first) and came flying out. Too bad for him he didnt get me in city limits. I got lucky... Two warnings, one for speeding (hi, 120 in a 55) and one for the open headers. Talk about lucky day!

True. You could have some pipes bent to mate the OEM front resonator w/the LTs/cats. But why go through the trouble of LTs/cats to have flow choked by the factory plumbing? If you're not close to a shop then you might have to wait for an aftermarket kit. Unfortunately, it may be some time.

Blown Honda? Open head...er? I don't understand?

:gr_jest: That's all in the past now, you turned out just fine... :)

Some of you guys have some bad luck. I've driven a few cars around for periods of time with open headers and never had a problem. Once i had to drive my 86 grand prix around for an entire month with open exhaust after i put the headers in because my uncle screwed me getting into his shop so i couldn't finsh the exhaust. Similar problems after putting headers into 2 thirdgens, only about a week each with those. As long as you don't dig into it and keep the RPMs under 3k it's really not that loud. I rememeber getting nervous passing cops, but never got hassled because i simply lifted as i rolled by. I have one experience burned into my head though, sitting at a red light on a hill and had a cop come up behind me. I just took off REEEEAAAAAL slowly, and somehow the cop either didn't notice or didnt care.

But anyhow, if you're really that nervous about driving with open exhaust, tows don't cost that much money. And if you have any kind of towing insurance you're that much better off.

Thought about that... But i'm still not a big fan of very many exhaust shops around here anyhow. If I could find a quality shop that could weld up mandrel bent pipes and toss that together with a pre-fab X-pipe or something, that'd be nice. Though i'd probably pay an arm and a leg for it.

I haven't seen an 05's exhaust system so I do not know shat is any diferances there are before the Catback. But.,, the 04 exhaust did not match the LT's 3" diameter. The flanges made up for it. There also required conecting tubes after the cats to reach the cat back. The factory Cats don't matter because if you go LT then they do not fit reguardless. The only thing that would matter is the location of the catback flange.

Well all I can say is give Stainless works and others about 2 or 3 months. I'm sure they will have an adaptor for that system.

Speaking of, I emailed Stainless Works last night. No reply yet... I also emailed Corsa and they said not yet but sometime this summer. They may however be looking for an 05 to use as a 'template' if someone is interested.

Stainless works will be on the ball. Someone local needs to cowboy up and get a 05 and drive it over there.

Snow is the rate limiting step right now :barf:

Anyone have a pic like the one below, except for an '05? I am wondering if the '05 has a heat shield on the passenger side exit, like the '04 does on the drivers side. My thought being, if I remove the plastic cover to go dual exit, I could possibly use an '05 part on that side for a more sano install. Is there a part # yet?

Both sides have a heat shield. I dont recall seeing the heat shields in the center where the mufflers are located on 04's however.

That isnt a picture, it is a rendering from a 3D model or something. I havent seen one of the 05 yet but if someone has a high res version of the 05 underside rendering like this, i'd love to have it.

I sent you guys an email a month ago offering up my new 05 and didn't get any response at all. Nothing. Now I've ordered Kooks and will do custom exhaust. If this is for real, why didn't you respond?

Return the Kooks and bring the care to us-free headers and you don't have to do anything.

I never received an email from you-PM me with what email adress you sent it to-I would have responded as it would save me from trying to get a car.

Let me know who is interested!

Thanks
Al
