· Info - Proper Jump Starting Procedure #04-06-03-006 - (Sep 14, 2004)
Proper Jump Starting Procedure
2004-2005 Pontiac GTO

This bulletin is meant to inform technicians of the possibility of burnt-out headlamp bulbs as the result of incorrect jump-starting of the vehicle, especially if the battery is at an extremely low state of charge (less than 3 volts).

If the jumper cables are disconnected too quickly, the generator creates a momentary voltage spike until the regulator is able to adjust to the new load condition.

When jump-starting, ensure that both vehicles run for at least one minute prior to disconnecting the jumper cables. This allows the battery voltage to stabilize and avoid any spike in the voltage

· Informational - Discolored, Dirty, Dark, Sludge and/or Grease in the Clutch Fluid Reservoir #04-07-31-002 - (Feb 16, 2004)
Discolored, Dirty, Dark, Sludge and/or Grease in the Clutch Fluid Reservoir
2004 Pontiac GTO

with Transmission, Manual 6 Speed, Tremec, 85 mm, 2.97 First, 0.57 Sixth, Overdrive (RPO M12)

It may be observed on some vehicles that the clutch fluid in the reservoir appears to be discolored, dirty, have sludge or grease contaminates in it after being in service for a period of time.

The level of discoloration will vary with factors such as driving conditions, under hood temperatures etc.

This is a phenomenon that may occur with time due to the interaction between the clutch system rubber parts with hydraulic clutch fluid.

The small amount of sludge or grease that may be noticed is, in fact, grease that has migrated from the master cylinder assembly. The grease is used during assembly of the master cylinder.

Engineering investigations of returned fluid samples show that discoloration and grease in the fluid DO NOT negatively affect the performance of the clutch hydraulic fluid.

Field reports indicate that where clutch fluid and or clutch system components have been replaced to address this condition, the vehicles have returned with the same condition causing a repeat repair and a dissatisfied customer.

Discolored clutch fluid should not be replaced in a normal operating system.

For Clutch System Concerns and Diagnosis, refer to Diagnostic Starting Point - Clutch SI Document ID #1338362.

2004 Pontiac GTO

Condition
Some customers may comment on a knock noise from the front suspension when driving at low speeds over bumps or uneven road surfaces.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the lower coil of the spring touching on the side lip of the spring seat.

The spring coils contacting the body sheet metal within the wheelhouse area may also cause this condition.

Correction
Inspection
Inspect the tightness of all front suspension fasteners. If they are OK, proceed to Step 2.
Inspect the body sheet metal around the inside of the strut tower for signs of spring coil rubbing.
Inspect the second lower coil on the inboard side of the spring for signs of chipped or marked paint, as shown in the previous illustration.
If marks are found as described in Steps 2 and 3, proceed to Procedure A.
Procedure A

Tools Required
J 45059 Angle Meter

Remove the spring from the strut assembly and re-install it upside down (with the thin coil end resting on the spring seat).
Carefully reinstall the upper bearing (yellow plastic housing), ensuring that it is located correctly in the upper spring seat.
While the strut is removed from the vehicle, cycle the control arm up and down.
If a noise is heard from the lower control arm rod front insulator bushing, reinstall the strut assembly to the vehicle and proceed to Procedure B.
If no noise is heard, install new strut-to-steering knuckle attaching bolts and nuts. Tighten the nuts while applying pressure to the top of the brake rotor. This will ensure that the camber adjustment bolt is against the strut tube, eliminating the need to perform a front end alignment. Tighten

· Loss of Pedal Height/Low Clutch Pedal, Clutch Does not Release Fully Untill Full Pedal Travel, Difficulty Changing Gears (Tighten Clutch Pressure Plate Bolts) #04-07-31-003 - (Jun 30, 2004)
Loss of Pedal Height/Low Clutch Pedal, Clutch Doesn't Release Fully Until Full Pedal Travel, Difficulty Changing Gears (Tighten Clutch Pressure Plate Bolts)
2004 Pontiac GTO Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 4L234149

with Manual Transmission

Condition
Some customers may comment on progressive loss of pedal height (which, if not addressed, could result in the clutch not fully releasing until full pedal travel), difficulty in changing gears or a low clutch pedal.

Cause
Root cause analysis has identified that the clutch pressure plate bolt torque on vehicles produced before the above VIN breakpoint may loosen in service. This condition was corrected in production by increasing the torque of the clutch pressure plate bolts. This change became effective in vehicle production beginning with VIN 4L234149, built on 2/11/04.

Correction

Important
This correction MUST be performed before retail delivery of new vehicles built prior to VIN breakpoint 4L234149.
Whenever performing repairs to the clutch assembly on vehicles built both prior to and after the specified VIN breakpoint, ensure that all six pressure plate retaining bolts are tightened in sequence as shown in the illustration.

Apply additional torque to the clutch pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts to the revised torque specification of 70 N·m +/-7 N·m (52 lb ft +/-5 lb ft).

SI will be updated with this revised torque specification in the future.

Tighten the bolts in sequence in 4 steps:

Tighten all bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
Tighten all bolts to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).
Tighten all bolts to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).
Tighten all bolts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).

2004 Pontiac GTO

Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 4L246712

This bulletin is being revised to change a torque specification within the correction procedure. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-03-09-003 (Section 03 -- Suspension).

Condition
Some customers may comment on a knocking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. This noise occurs during an aggressive launch or acceleration and will be more common on vehicles with a manual transmission.

Cause
The cause of this condition may be contact between the body and the rear suspension crossmember.

Correction
Install insulators, P/N 90447991, and new bolts, P/N 92038482, between the body and the rear suspension crossmember using the procedure listed below.

Important
Only remove the bolts from one side of the suspension crossmember at a time, and DO NOT loosen the opposite side, until the insulator is installed on the first side and all fasteners have been tightened to the specified torque setting.

Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in the General Information sub-section of the Service Manual. Position rear hoist.
Support the rear suspension crossmember just under the brace using an adjustable jack stand.
Remove the 3 brace to underbody bolts.
Remove the front mount bolt attaching the rear suspension crossmember to the underbody.
Lower the jack stand slightly to allow clearance between the crossmember and the underbody.

Important
When installing the insulator onto the crossmember front mount bushing, face the corrugated side upwards, so it bears against the underbody.

Install the insulator between the underbody and the upper part of the crossmember, ensuring to seat the insulator firmly onto the center of the crossmember front mount bushing.
Raise the crossmember using the jack stand until it is pressing firmly against the underbody.
With the jack stand still in position to support the crossmember, install the new front mount bolt and the 3 brace to underbody bolts. Tighten
Tighten the crossmember front mount bolt to 125N·m(92 lb ft). Use J 45059 Torque Angle Meter in order to tighten the bolt an additional 40 degrees.

· Poor Radio Reception or Radio Static/Increased Interference with Rear Window Defogger On or Some Rear Window Defogger Grids May Be Inoperative (Diagnose and Repair Rear Window Defogger Heating Grid) #03-08-44-005B - (Jan 14, 2004)
Poor Radio Reception or Radio Static/Increased Interference with Rear Window Defogger On or Some Rear Window Defogger Grids May Be Inoperative (Diagnose and Repair Rear Window Defogger Heating Grid)

2004 Pontiac GTO

This bulletin is being revised to provide additional models. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-08-44-005A (Section 08 -- Body and Accessories).

Condition
Some customers may comment that the radio has poor reception or radio static/increased interference when the rear window defogger is turned on. Also, some rear window defogger grids may be inoperative.

Cause
This condition may be due to microscopic cracks in the electrically heated grids of the rear window defogger. These cracks may cause electrical interference when the rear defogger is on and this could affect radio reception.

Background
The addition of vertical grid lines to the heated back window defogger circuits has made it difficult to detect broken defogger grid lines. In the past, it was a simple matter to use a voltmeter to check the continuity of each grid line in order to locate a non-functional line. New design back windows have two vertical grid lines that connect all of the horizontal grid lines together, thereby providing alternate routes for the electrical current to follow. This makes the old test method ineffective.

Materials Required
Permatex Quick Grid, P/N 15067, or equivalent
A small ball of fine steel wool Type 00, or
Optional -- A strip of liquid crystal heat sensitive paper, 51 mm x 305 mm (2 in x 12 in) or similar size (Contact Edmund Scientific at 800-728-6999 for part number CR30723-70 or go to www.scientificsonline.com), or
Optional -- A portable infrared thermometer, GE-46819, available from Kent-Moore (1-800-345-2233), or equivalent.
Correction
There are three distinct zones across the back window that must be checked. They are:

the driver's side outboard of the two vertical lines
the passenger side outboard of the two vertical lines
the central zone that falls between the two vertical lines
To detect a broken grid line in any of the above three zones and to isolate the exact location of the break, perform the following:

Caution
Approved safety glasses and gloves should be worn when performing this procedure to reduce the chance of personal injury.
Cover the rear shelf area to prevent damage to the interior trim material.

Start the engine and turn on the back window defogger.

Important
The first place to check should be the driver side segment 2 to 3 lines up from the bottom about 380-385 mm (15-15.2 in) from the buss bar.

Take the ball of fine steel wool and twist one end to a point. Move the point slowly across each grid line. Be sure to start at the far side of the zone and move it to the opposite side of the zone. When you bridge the grid line break with the steel wool, you will see a small spark. Repeat the test over the same area to be sure you have accurately located the break. Mark the exact location of the grid line break. Repeat this portion of the test for each grid line. If you do not see a spark at any point, it is possible that there are two breaks in the same line and zone. Close visual inspection using a magnifying glass may be the only way to locate breaks in this case.
The following are provided as a alternative way to detect a non-functional grid line. If available, use in addition to the steel wool.
Method using liquid crystal heat sensitive paper.

Important
The first part of the test must be completed quickly before the entire surface of the back window becomes warm.

From outside the vehicle, place the heat sensitive paper (dull surface in contact with the glass) against the top driver side grid line. Start the engine and turn on the back window defogger. A distinct color change will take place at each conductive grid line. Repeat for the bottom grid lines until they have all been checked in the driver side zone.
Repeat the process for the passenger side and center area zones.
If no color change is noted for a grid line, place a crayon or china marker check mark beside it. Mark each grid line in the zone where it is non-conductive and therefore not heating up. More than one broken grid line may be found.
Method using a portable infrared thermometer.
Start the engine and turn on the rear back window defogger.
From inside the vehicle, start at the top driver side grid line and slowly run the portable infrared thermometer vertically down the rear window contacting each grid line. You should be able to see a district variation in temperature readings.
Mark each grid line in the zone where it is non-conductive and, therefore, not heating up. More than one broken grid line may be found.
Repeat the process for the passenger side and center area zones.
Use Permatex Quick Grid, P/N 15067, or equivalent, to repair each broken grid line. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Wait 24 hours before turning the defogger on, or the repair can be fast cured using a heat gun, 260°C -- 371°C (500°F -- 700°F). Hold the heat gun within 25 - 51 mm (1- 2 in) from the repair point for 2 to 3 minutes.
Recheck the grid line with the heat sensitive paper or a portable infrared thermometer to ensure that the line is now functional and that the repair was successful.

Park/Neutral to Reverse or Drive (commonly called garage shift) engagement times may be different from what many customers might be accustomed to, especially if they have recently traded for a General Motors' vehicle.

Normal Park/Neutral to Reverse or Drive engagement time will be in the vicinity of one (1) second if the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is above 0°C (32°F) . When the ATF is colder than 0°C (32°F), the engagement time will become longer the colder the transmission fluid. A time limit factor cannot be placed on proper engagement times because the factors that affect transmission operation are many.

At the moment of engine start, for economy and emission requirements, the transmission line pressure is maintained at low levels. This allows a lower cold idle engine RPM (the colder the oil is, the higher the energy level (engine torque output) required to pressurize the oil).

When the driver moves the shift lever from "Park/Neutral" to "Reverse" or any "Drive" range, the following actions must occur for the powertrain control module (PCM) to determine at what pressure to control the transmission line pressure.

The module will look at the following items:

The voltage readings of the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT).
The voltage reading of the transmission fluid temperature sensor (TFT).
Whether or not air conditioning is requested.
Movement of the shift lever and controls engine RPM based on the gear position selected. The module will adjust the engine RPM in response to the torque requirements needed to increase transmission line pressure.
When the module determines the status of the above items, the module will apply the appropriate signal to the PWM pressure control solenoid, thereby controlling the application of the required clutch(s) depending on the driver's selection.

Controlling transmission apply pressures allows the transmission to engage in a smooth manner, thus reducing the potential of abrupt/harsh engagement of the transmission.

All of the above actions happen very quickly; however, the resultant time interval may be approximately one second.

When determining if shift times are excessive, the exact conditions that the vehicle was in at the time the extended garage shift occurred must be duplicated. The following are several possible conditions.

Was the vehicle outside or in a heated garage?
What was the temperature of the environment at the time of the occurrence?
Length of time the vehicle sat unused, such as overnight or a weekend, etc.? A vehicle that has been driven to the service facility cannot be tested for this concern because the transmission, the engine oil and the coolant are no longer at the temperature they were when the customer experienced the condition.
No attempts to repair should occur unless the condition can be duplicated under the conditions the customer experienced.

Road test the vehicle following the steps below until the vehicle engine and transmission temperatures are at normal operating temperatures. This is approximately 16 km (10 mi) of driving.

In a safe manner, bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
Place the shift lever in Neutral and wait five seconds.
Place the shift lever in Drive. A delayed engagement of approximately one (1) second will occur. THIS IS NORMAL. This time may be extended if the engine RPM is above the base idle, controlled by the driver's foot rather than the control module.
Drive the vehicle for a distance of not less than a tenth of a mile (160 m).
In a safe manner, bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
Place the shift lever in Neutral and wait five seconds.
Place the shift lever in Reverse. A delayed engagement of approximately one (1) second will occur. THIS IS NORMAL. This time may be extended if the engine RPM is above the base idle, controlled by the driver's foot rather than the control module.
If an out of line condition (excessively long time, over two seconds, to engage a gear) is observed, the following areas within the transmission should be inspected for the cause of the concern.

The forward clutch piston seals (delay to drive).
The low and reverse clutch piston seals (delay to reverse).
The reverse input clutch piston seals (delay to reverse).
The stator shaft to reverse input drum seals (delay to reverse).

· DTC P0757 Set, SES Lamp Illuminated, Poor Performance of Transmission, Transmission Slipping (Clean Transmission Valve Body and Case Oil Passages of Debris) #01-07-30-038B - (Jan 26, 2004)
DTC P0757 Set, SES Lamp Illuminated, Poor Performance of Transmission, Transmission Slipping (Clean Transmission Valve Body and Case Oil Passages of Debris)

with 4L60-E/4L65-E Automatic Transmission (RPOs M30/M32)

Condition
Some customers may comment on any of the following conditions:

The SES lamp is illuminated.
No 3rd and 4th gear.
The transmission does not shift correctly.
The transmission feels like it shifts to Neutral or a loss of drive occurs.
The vehicle free wheels above 48 km/h (30 mph). High RPM needed to overcome the free wheeling.

Cause
The most likely cause is chips or debris plugging the bleed orifice of the 2-3 shift solenoid. This will cause the transmission to stay in 2nd gear when 3rd gear is commanded and return to 1st gear when 4th gear is commanded.

DTC P0757 may also be set if the 2-3 shift valve or 2-3 shuttle valve were stuck, restricted and/or hung-up in its bore.

Correction
Inspect / Clean the 2-3 shift valve, the 2-3 shuttle valve and the valve bore of debris / metal chips.
Inspect / Clean the 2-3 shift solenoid opening of debris / metal chips. While inspecting the 2-3 shift solenoid, look for a screen over the solenoid opening. If the solenoid DOES NOT have a screen, replace the solenoid with P/N 10478131 that does have a screen over the solenoid opening.
Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for additional diagnostic information and service procedures.

Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Normal Operating Characteristics

2004 Pontiac GTO

This bulletin is being published to advise dealers of two normal operational characteristics of the RKE system that may lead customers to believe the system is faulty.

In the first instance, if a driver exits the vehicle and locks it with the remote, and the passenger door is open, the vehicle will not lock. The horn will chirp three times to indicate that the doors are not properly locked and this warning signal will occur again on each successive press of the lock button on the key fob. To reset the system, press and hold the door unlock button for five seconds. Both doors can now be locked. In order to bypass this condition, the personalization settings must be changed. Refer to Vehicle Personalization in the Owner's Manual.

The second issue is when the customer presses the lock and/or unlock button multiple times. This will cause the key fob to become out of sequence with the RKE receiver. When this occurs, the key fob will not operate until it is re-sequenced.

In order to correct a key fob that is out-of-sequence, follow these steps:

While seated in the vehicle, press and hold the unlock button on the key fob.
While still pressing the unlock key on the fob, insert the ignition key into the ignition switch and turn the key to the ON position.
Once the Driver Information Center (DIC) cycles, release the unlock button.
Turn the key to the OFF position and remove the key.
The key fob should now operate both doors.

· Information on Intermittent Loss of Radio Speakers/Sound When Played at Very High Volume - Normal Condition/Design Intent #04-08-44-002 - (Feb 3, 2004)
Information on Intermittent Loss of Radio Speakers/Sound When Played At Very High Volume

2004 Pontiac GTO

Some customers may comment that the radio audio or speakers may turn off intermittently resulting in no sound. This may occur when the radio is played at very high or full volume for an extended period. The radio is designed to shut itself off to protect the amplifier from overheating under such severe usage. When the amplifier cools down, the radio will reset and function normally. This characteristic is NOT a failure of any component. Do not replace the radio for this condition; it is the designed and intended function of the protection circuit.

Important
This characteristic is NOT a failure of any component. Do not replace the radio for this condition, it is the designed and intended function of the protection circuit.

Recommendation
The radio has a built in function that limits distortion. Distortion is the main generator that causes heat buildup in the amplifier. This is a user selectable function that is accessible in the Personalization Programming Menu available through the I/P display. The Dynamic Distortion selection must be turned ON to activate this function. The Dynamic Distortion circuit will limit the radio volume and dynamic range to control distortion at high sound levels. The Dynamic Distortion feature will slightly limit volume and will reduce the heat generated in the amplifier, however, continued operation even with the Dynamic Distortion turned on can result in overheat and radio shut down. Refer to the Owner's Manual for specific instructions to enable this feature. Additionally, you should instruct your customer to keep the Dynamic Distortion feature ON.

**QUALITY PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION (PDI)**
Performing a quality pre-delivery inspection is one of the most important functions your dealership can do for the customer. Most customers consider the condition of their new vehicle during delivery as a direct reflection of your dealership and your service department. A quality PDI is essential to improving a customer's perception of your dealership and increasing his/her satisfaction with their new vehicle.

Paint Protection
A plastic film known as [lsquo ]Rapguard[rsquo ] is applied to external horizontal painted surfaces to provide protection from ultra violet light, fallout and chemical attack from bird droppings etc. This covering is to be removed within 6 months of the vehicle build date.

Underhood Transit Corrosion Protection
This protection is provided by a urethane coating on all surfaces. This is colorless and does not need to be removed.

Underbody Transit Corrosion Protection
This is a light color spray wax which does not need to be removed, but should this require removal from visible components, dissolve by using " Prepsol" or a similar product.

Loose Parts
A "loose parts" package is provided in the vehicle trunk. This package includes the following components:

Wheel nut caps and wheel covers
Floor mats and retainers
Spare ignition and glovebox compartment keys
License plate attaching bracket and screws
Security data card
Wheel Nut Caps
The wheel nut caps are NOT threaded. Push the wheel nut caps onto the wheel nuts. Use the wheel nut cap removal tool in order to remove the wheel nut caps. The wheel nut cap removal tool stores with the spare tire service equipment in the rear compartment.

Customer Information CD
This CD is shipped with the vehicle and is loaded into the audio CD player. It is important that the CD remain in the CD player until the customer removes it. The cover for the CD should remain in the glovebox. The CD should be explained to the customer during the delivery process.

Security Data Card

Important
The security card includes security data relevant to the security of the vehicle, including radio PIN, key cutting codes and remote key reprogramming code. Please request that the owner keep this card in a safe place, preferably not in the vehicle.

The vehicle security data card is shipped in the loose parts package in the vehicle trunk. It includes critical data for the vehicle including key codes, BCM Security Code, and radio PIN. This should be provided to the customer during the delivery process, and the customer advised to keep it in a safe place. The selling dealership must make a copy of the security card and retain a copy in the sales file. The security information is required any time the battery is disconnected, for instance, during vehicle servicing or repair, the radio PIN will need to be re-entered. The security card is of the same size as a credit card.

Rapgard Removal

Notice
Rapgard may become brittle and difficult to remove if left on the painted surfaces for periods in excess of 6 months. If the vehicle is to be stored for a period greater than this, it is recommended that the Rapgard be removed or paint damage could occur.

Under normal circumstances, the Rapgard film should easily peel away from the surface, and leaves no residue.

Door Edge Protection
The foam blocks are designed to protect the vehicle while in storage or on display. The foam blocks should not be removed until the vehicle is delivered to the owner.

Interior Protection Removal
Within 6 months of the vehicle build date, and prior to vehicle retail delivery, remove all of the components of the interior protection package.

Brake Disc Protection Covers
These impregnated paper covers which are fitted to the brake discs behind the wheels, can be removed by tearing them away from the brake disc area. There is no need to remove the wheels.
Description of covers -- The covers are manufactured from a high strength plastic material with vapor emitting paper attached to the inner surface. They are designed to provide surface corrosion protection and are intended to prevent tearing during vehicle movement in shipping.

License Plate Installation
Certain State laws require the use of a front license plate. A front license plate bracket and instructions are supplied with every vehicle in the loose ship parts box in the trunk.

Set Time Display on Radio

To set the correct time, press the [lsquo ]Time[rsquo ] button on the radio to reveal time display. Hold for two seconds. The display will show [lsquo ]TIME ADJ[rsquo ] and the time will flash.
To adjust hours, press SEEK/TRACK button.
To adjust minutes, press the TUNE button.
Front Suspension Chocks
The chocks are fitted to both the front suspension springs to raise the suspension height during new vehicle shipment. These must be removed before the vehicle is driven on public roads. While the vehicle is on a hoist for the under body inspection, remove the front suspension chocks. Once the vehicle[rsquo ]s weight is removed from the wheels and the wheel is hanging, the chock can be grasped and twisted out for removal.

Tire Pressure
Tires are inflated to 60 psi at the Assembly Plant for transportation. This will also prevent flat spotting of tires when left in storage for prolonged periods, but is not suitable for normal driving. Ensure this pressure is maintained while the car is kept in storage. Deflate tires to pressures indicated on the placard on the rear face of the driver's side door prior to retail delivery.

**PDI Checklist**

with 4L60-E or 4L65-E Automatic Transmission

This bulletin is being revised to update model years, add additional models and 4L80/85 Transmission Information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-30-002C (Section 07 -- Transmission/Transaxle).

Condition
Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions:

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is ON.
The transmission is defaulted to second gear (4L80/85-E).
The transmission is defaulted to third gear (4L60/65-E).
The instrument cluster is inoperative.
Upon investigation, one or all of the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0740, P0753, P0758, P0785, P0787, P0973, P0976, P1860, P2761, P2764 and P2769 may be set depending on the vehicle.

Cause
The most likely cause of this condition may be a loss of voltage to the transmission on circuit 1020. This loss of power may be caused by an open in the ignition switch. This condition may also be the result of an incorrect installation of an aftermarket electronic device such as a remote starter or alarm system.

Correction
With the ignition switch in the RUN position, test for battery voltage at the appropriate fuse listed below.

2004-2005
Pontiac GTO
AUTO TRANS

If battery voltage is present at the fuse, inspect the ignition voltage circuit between the fuse and the transmission for possible opens. If battery voltage is not present at the fuse, replace the ignition switch using the Ignition Switch Replacement procedure in the Steering Wheel and Column sub-section of the applicable Service Manual. Refer to group number 2.188 of the parts catalog for part description and usage.

If the vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket electronic device and the DTCs are being set when the device is being used, verify that the appropriate fuse listed above is being supplied battery voltage during operation. If voltage is not present at this fuse, these DTCs will be set due to lack of voltage at the solenoids. This condition is most likely to occur with an incorrectly installed remote starting system. If this is the case, refer the customer to the installer of the system for corrections.

Rough Motion Felt During Front Seat Movement (Install Seat Track Dampener) #05-08-50-006 - (Apr 8, 2005)
Rough Motion Felt During Front Seat Movement (Install Seat Track Dampener)
2004 Pontiac GTO

Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 4L397250

Condition
Some customers may comment that rough motion can be felt during front seat forward and rearward movements.

Correction
To smooth the forward and rearward operation of the seat, install a seat track dampener to both front seats using the procedure listed below.

Move the seat to the mid-position using the seat controls. Mid-position is when the front of the track rails are level.
Raise the seat to the full up position using the seat controls.

For older vehicles that do not have the cable tray-style wiring harness (built prior to March 2004), release the seat cushion cover flap J-clip.
Remove the side cover.
Remove the two front seat frame-to-cushion mounting nuts.
Important: Take care not to overstretch any of the wires when you tilt the seat backward.

Tilt the seat backward. On vehicles with the seat cushion cover flap, the flap will catch on the track assembly. It is not necessary to completely remove the flap as this will protect the wires from being stretched too far.

On later vehicles with the cable tray-style wiring harness (built after March 2004), unclip the cable tray from the track by lifting the front clips. Pull the cable tray forward to disengage the rear clips.

Position the dampener, P/N 92138926, by aligning the retaining tang over the motor mount flange and the friction pads over the drive shaft.

Tap the dampener retaining tang into place with a hammer.

The illustration above shows the dampener in its final position.
Reinstall the cable tray, if applicable.

Move the track until the driveshaft V-grooves are in the upper position.

Important: In the next step, be sure to place paper under the area to protect the carpet from any drips.

Apply Permatex® 68040, GM P/N 12377901, or equivalent, to the groove until half-filled and work into the joint under the plastic spacer.
Operate the seat back and forth several times for a distance of 100 mm (4 in). After this, DO NOT operate the seat for at least 1 hour to allow the Permatex® to set.
Lower the seat cushion onto the mounts and reinstall the nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 28N·m(21 lb ft).

Reattach the cover flap where applicable.
Reinstall the side cover.
Repeat this procedure on the other front seat

Front Seat Does Not Move Forward When Lever Is Unlatched (Replace Micro Switch Assembly)
2004 Pontiac GTO

Condition
Some customers may comment that the front seat does not move forward when the "easy entry" lever is unlatched and the seat back is tilted forward.

Cause
This condition may be caused by poor retention of the micro switch in its housing. If the switch is loose, the "easy entry" lever cam will fail to activate the switch.

with Cast Aluminum Wheels

Condition
Some customers may comment on a low tire pressure condition.

Diagnosis of the low tire pressure condition indicates an air leak through the cast aluminum wheel.

Cause
Porosity in the cast aluminum wheel may be the cause.

Correction
Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate service procedure in SI.
Locate the leaking area by inflating the tire to 276 kPa (40 psi) and dipping the tire/wheel assembly in a water bath, or use a spray bottle with soap and water to locate the specific leak location.
Important:

• If the porosity leak is located in the bead area of the aluminum rim (where the tire meets the rim), the wheel should be replaced.

• If two or more leaks are located on one wheel, the wheel should be replaced.

If air bubbles are observed, mark the location.
- If the leak location is on the tire/rubber area, refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 04-03-10-001A or newer - Tire Puncture Repair Procedures for All Cars and Light Duty Trucks (SI Document ID #1573203).

- If the leak is located on the aluminum wheel area, continue with the next step.

Inscribe a mark on the tire at the valve stem in order to indicate the orientation of the tire to the wheel.
Dismount the tire from the wheel. Refer to Tire Mounting and Dismounting (SI Document ID #1332544).
Scuff the INSIDE rim surface at the leak area with #80 grit paper and clean the area with general purpose cleaner, such as 3M® General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, P/N 08984, or equivalent.
Apply a 3 mm (0.12 in) thick layer of Silicone - Adhesive/Sealant, GM P/N 12378478 (Canadian P/N 10953493) or equivalent, to the leak area.
Allow for the adhesive/sealant to dry.
Notice: Caution must be used when mounting the tire so as not to damage the sealer. Damaging the repair area may result in an air leak.

Align the inscribed mark on the tire with the valve stem on the wheel.
Mount the tire on the wheel. Refer to Tire Mounting and Dismounting (SI Document ID #1332544).
Pressurize the tire to 276 kPa (40 psi) and inspect for leaks.
Adjust tire pressure to meet the placard specification.
Balance the tire/wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Assembly Balancing - Off-Vehicle (SI Document ID #664222).
Install the tire and wheel assembly onto the vehicle. Refer to the appropriate service procedure in SI.

Anything about the throttle body? Some people have reported it doesn't feel like the car is opening up all the way.

I have a quick question that I hope isn't among the dumbest ones out there. ;)

If the TSB says it's for cars prior to my VIN breakpoint, and if I experience what the TSB describes, would my car still be covered? I know, for instance, the erratic gauge movement TSB mentions that, for vehicles after the breakpoint, the cluster has to be replaced. Most of the other ones say no such thing. If I hear a clunk in my trunk, should it still be covered, even though my car is newer than the VIN breakpoint? And, is the clunk in the TSB regarding the rear suspension knock?

Thanks!

Is there a T.S.B. on paint peeling from the front and rear fascias? I've heard there was, but I have no idea what it details.

Thanks

My first car had the "clunk in the trunk" - the dealer could see where the drivetrain was hitting the chassis - even though my May build date was beyond the April cutoff in the TSB.

They ordered the parts per the TSB, and it (mostly) fixed the problem... so, I would say "yes", at least relating to this particular TSB.

I do have some of the paint peeling problem on the rear fascia. It is only on one corner. Like something oily was there before the paint was sparyed. JP

Is there a service bulletin for the squeeking front brakes? I read on here that someone said there was and had his front pads replaced for free. Just wondering because mine are squeeking and it needs to go back in for the steering wheel radio controls.

I'll let you know today or tomorrow. I took mine in last week for several items and this was one of them. Hopefully, I should have it back soon. Waiting on parts from the Roo factory.

You sure it's not the brake booster mentioned above. I had similar noises and that was the problem. Actually, I've had every problem listed here and then some. :judge:

Maybe??

No, thats with the car stopped. There are no TSBs for brake squealing.

Last night when I picked up my car, I was told by the Service Manager that the squeaking of the breaks is the "VEHICLE OPERATING TO DESIGN." That's the quote written on my service report. I talked to him on the phone and he told be basically that all GTOs have loud squealling breaks, and GM has told them not to do anything about it. I asked if we could take another new GTO out for a spin and show me the same noise, which they couldn't do because they have none on the lot (except the one the owner keeps in his own private show room).

Funny how no other GTOs I've seen exhibit this problem, only a select few menioned here above me. My problems started happening around 1,000 miles on the car and it progressively gets worse. Now at 6,000 it's a high pitched squeal when brakes are applied, I have to slam on the brakes for them to make no noise. I can even hear them through the cabin with the windows up, with the windows down all passengers tell me to get my brakes looked at.

I hate it because it's getting people to turn heads for the wrong reason, they hear what sounds like a terrible set of brakes that pierce their ears, turn and see my brand new GTO causing all the noise. A new car should not have a problem like this in such short amount of time. They told me that if I didn't want the noise to buy new brake pads from somewhere else.

When I first got my GTO last year, I heard a slight squeal when I'd brake, but that went away once the linings got broken in.

I noticed it on my friend's Goat as well.

6,000 miles now, it should be well broken in by now. The squeal started really early on, and I've been patient with them fixing it. They keep telling me it's fixed, and now instead they are telling me they wont fix it.

The Phantom

Well, it's obviously a friction squeal. I don't think there's much they'll be able to do for it short of what you've already been told--go aftermarket.

I wouldn't discount the break-in, though. I have almost 30,000 miles on mine, so back when I noticed it, it was probably about 5-6,000 miles as well. I'd like to tell you to be patient, but I know it sucks to have sounds emanating from your vehicle that shouldn't be.

Good luck regardless.

You can do it the old fashioned way. Scuff up the rotor and pad surface with some sandpaper.

My old DHS had a terrible brake dust problem(factory brakes). When it would start squealing real bad, I would use my pressure washer through the wheel opening and spray off all the brake dust and the squeal would go away for a month or two. Might have been the brake dust material on the pads, or the fact that I "roughed" the rotors up by letting the water hit them and rust a bit but it worked. Just somethign to think about :)

On the topic, I found these for the 05s, any detailed info on them? (some look like generic GM TSBs not related)

Has anyone heard of a tach sticking on a 2006 Automatic GTO? My tach sticks in gear but not when reving. I am a GM Asst. Service Manager and I have not found any TSB's. I will speak with a GM Engineer on Monday when it is put into the shop. Please Email me and let me know if anyone else has experienced this condition, I have already had the cluster replaced.

Unfortunately if the dealer or customer service dept. can't find these TSBs on their computer they often can't/won't help you. I'm not sure if they are selective on finding these or they just don't know where to look.

I hope it is just a communication problem and not an premeditated effort by GM to keep info hidden and screw the consumer.

Interesting that our Pontiac Dealers cannot find these TSBs while we can find the lists of GTO TSBs at multiple public locations like Edmunds.com and NHTSA.gov. How hard are they looking? Even if they cannot find them, they should be able to call Pontiac TAC to find the relevant TSB for a problem. To help the Pontiac Service Dept, I have printed out the TSBs related to my GTO's problems in the event they cannot find them.

By the way, thanks to everyone who has posted the full text of the GTO TSBs here. This information is very helpful when talking to the local Pontiac Service Advisor and is GREATLY appreciated! Knowledge is power.

The only thing they fixed was the Speedo/fuel gauge fix.

HJR
do you know if when a dealer tries this and is unsuccessful and orders a pair of seat tracks, will they be of the faster generation where the seats move faster like in the 06's?

Ok, I did a search for TSB's and came up with 36 for 2005.

A few I have regarding my car

The clunking noises in the drivetrain at low speeds and during shifts
The T/C coming on at low speeds, had it happen twice yesterday.
The Intermittent block out of 1st from a stop.. It is getting harder and harder for me to shift my car into 1st when stopping at lights. Usually I just shift it into 1st as I'm coming up to the light so I don't have to worry about not being able to shift it in when the light turns green.
My power seats aren't working. Well my driver side works fine but the passenger doesn't recline or anything.. Yeah I'm already taking it back for that..

My main question is, how do you approach a dealership about a TSB?
Do I just walk in there and ask them to go over the TSB and see which are taken care of or need taking care of? I know I could tell them what my car is doing and they are going to look at me stupid as they have many times before but now I'm seeing they have TSB's for issues I've brought the car to the dealership for and they just look at me stupid..

Thanks..

Paint peeling off of my driver's side door handle edge. Confronted the dealership and they are going to repaint it next week. I also have an issue with annoying rattles from the door locks and the drivers seat, and I have the rough seat movement issue. My rig is a 2005 model, but was built in Oct of 2004.

Just click on this link below and it will take you right to the TSB look-up on the NHTSA website. You have to put in year, model, etc., but on the last tab just check the box and press Submit. You do not have to "select a component". I found 19 - 2006 GTO TSB's. The bummer part about this site is it only gives you the title and summary - you have to subscribe to get the details. But the Pontiac dealers have access to these things from GM.

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/tsbsearch.cfm

You can also file a complaint about a defect with your vehicle by clicking on the "File A Complaint" link on the upper left of the NHTSA website above.

For Edmunds, go to this link and put in the info for the car you want to look up:

http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/vehicle.do

Again, it is only title and summary.

But, if you do a search on "TSB" here on the LS1 / LS2 GTO website you will get a full night's worth of reading material and details to print out and bring to your dealer.

Good luck and Aloha,

Hawaiian Goat

Find all the symptoms for the TSB that you think you are experiencing. Give them the descriptions of the TSB if you don't think they are taking you serious. Depending on the dealership though, you may have to contact the service manager and literally give him/her the TSB number. Usually when you use phrases similiar to the TSB they can do a search based on those keywords though.

I had a question about a DTC code, P1677. I first noticed the problem when I scanned for trouble codes with my predator. THe predator shows the code, but the description is "Unknown". I tried searching on the internet, but all I found for a description is "Driver 4, Line 7". Does anyone have an idea what this code might be?

When the ignition is turned ON or the door is unlocked by remote key the BCM and the key exchange security data to verify the correct key is used.
Once the correct key has been confirmed and the ignition is turned ON, the PIM and BCM exchange data to confirm the correct BCM and PIM is being used.
Once the correct key, BCM, and PIM is confirmed, the PIM and ECM exchange data to allow the vehicle to start.
The data exchange processes conducted use various encrypted data exchanges between each of the devices.

Thanks for the Info Plano. So I take it that DTC P1677 is not an error code?

PlanoGTO
11-28-2006, 03:09 AM
Yeah it is, an immobilizer signal DTC sets if the theft deterrent system authentication process fails.
If the car starts, then I would guess that it was just transient. Perhaps caused by reprogramming.
If the car will not start, here are the possible causes;
• If the key is not programmed to the BCM, then the key authentication will fail
• If the BCM is not linked to the PIM, then PIM to BCM Authentication will fail
• If the PIM is not linked to the ECM then the ECM to PIM authentication will fail
• If the PIM, BCM, Key or ECM have corrupt memory, then the authentication will fail
• If there is a fault with the GMLAN or UART bus, no authentication will occur

HonchoMcNabb
11-28-2006, 04:16 AM
Well, that is certainly strange. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I had to have the computer replaced a short time after I bought the vehicle. I guess I'll take it in and have tell them it's throwin an error code.

Suspension - Unnecessary Control Arm Bushing Replacement

Bulletin No.: 05-03-08-009

Date: July 29, 2005

INFORMATION
Subject:
Proper Diagnosis of Front Control Arm Rod Bushing with Suspected Leak or Clunk Noise

Models:
2004-2006 Pontiac GTO

It has been found that front control arm bushings (1) are being replaced unnecessarily for reports of leaking and/or causing a clunk noise from the front suspension.

Assessment of returned parts shows that these bushings were not leaking. Fluid around the bushing has been identified as assembly/shipping fluid which is applied during manufacture.

While it may appear that the bushing is leaking and believed to be the source of the clunk noise, it has been confirmed that even if the bushing had a genuine leak and lost all its fluid, it would not cause a clunk or knock-type noise.

To avoid misdiagnosis of the bushing, follow these steps:
1. Wipe the excess fluid off the bushing.

If the fluid appears to be trapped where the control arm passes through the center of the bushing, remove the bushing from the vehicle and clean the fluid from the center bore of the bushing.
2. Verify if the fluid returns after cleaning. The vehicle will have to be driven in order to put a load on the bushing. If no more fluid appears, the bushing is OK. If the bushing has been confirmed to be leaking, replace the bushing following the procedures in SI.

Anyone had this problem? The SES light isn't on, but it hangs onto gears kind of long sometimes and if I go full throttle in first, when it grabs second it lets out a quick squeal. I need to get to the dealer to have them look at it, but the closest one doesn't have the service center open on weekends.

· Info - Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Normal Operating Characteristics #04-08-52-006 - (Jun 22, 2004)

I used to have Alldata, some of their TSB's are out of left field. 04-07-30-028 reverse servo leak would be one of those. There is no reverse servo internally or externally on a 4L60/5 E. That's a transaxle bulletin.

BTW my 05 has the steering wheel paint, and door handle paint problems. And my steering wheel started rubbing the column cover.

Half of the time, about 2 minutes into a drive, moving or not I get a knock knock knock in the left quarter area. Thinking it's fuel tank related?

I tried programming back to stock using Diablosport Tuner, this did not work.
I left battery cables unhooked for a day, this did not work.
I took 2004 GTO to dealer, this worked.

The dealer had to reprogram my gauge cluster with the latest update, cost $60.00 plus 1.80 shop charge and tax. It has been about 6 days and no issues. As a side note I left the custom tune on my GTO (SLP Tune) and had no issues (car is not under warranty so I wanted to see if anything came up about this).

You think because my 2004 was bought from the dealer in september of 2005 that I had a late model 2004 and may avoid some of the common problems of other 2004 GTOs?

Depends on your VIN. My 301xxx VIN 2nd GTO is a lot more solid than my 281xxx VIN 1st GTO (which GM bought back)...

Engine Controls - Aftermarket Accessory Usage

Bulletin No.: 04-06-04-054A

Date: January 11, 2007

INFORMATION

Subject:
Non-GM Parts and Accessories (Aftermarket)

Models:
2007 and Prior Passenger Cars and Trucks (Including Saturn)
2007 and Prior HUMMER H2, H3
2005-2007 Saab 9-7X

Supercede:

This bulletin is being updated to add models and model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-06-04-054 (Section 06 - Engine).

The recent rise and expansion of companies selling non-GM parts and accessories has made it necessary to issue this reminder to dealers regarding GM's policy on the use and installation of these components.

When a dealer is performing a repair under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, they are required to use only genuine GM or GM-approved parts and accessories. This applies to all warranty repairs, special policy repairs or any repairs paid for by GM. Parts and accessories advertised as being "the same" as parts manufactured by GM, but not sold through GM, do not qualify for use in warranty repairs, special policy repairs or any repairs paid for by GM.

During a warranty repair, if a GM original equipment part is not available through GMSPO, ACDelco(R) distributors, other GM dealers or approved sources, the dealer is to obtain comparable, non-GM parts and clearly indicate, in detail, on the repair order the circumstances surrounding why non-GM parts were used. The dealer must give customers written notice, prior to the sale or service, that such parts or accessories are not marketed or warranted by General Motors.

It should also be noted that dealers modifying new vehicles and installing equipment, parts and accessories obtained from sources not authorized by GM are responsible for complying with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Certain non-approved parts or assemblies, installed by the dealer or its agent not authorized by GM, may result in a change to the vehicle's design characteristics and may affect the vehicle's ability to conform to federal law. Dealers must fully understand that non-GM approved parts may not have been validated, tested or certified for use. This puts the dealer at risk for potential liability in the event of a part or vehicle failure. If a GM part failure occurs as the result of the installation or use on a non-GM approved part, the warranty will not be honored.

A good example of non-authorized modification of vehicles is the result of an ever increasing supply of after market devices available to the customer, which claim to increase the horsepower and torque of the Duramax(TM) Diesel Engines. These include the addition of, but are not limited to one or more of the following modifications:

Propane injection

Nitrous oxide injection

Additional modules (black boxes) that connect to the vehicle wiring systems

Revised engine calibrations downloaded for the engine control module
Calibration modules which connect to the vehicle diagnostic connector Modification to the engine turbocharger waste gate

Although the installation of these devices, or modification of vehicle components, can increase engine horsepower and torque, they may also negatively affect the engine emissions, reliability and/or durability. In addition, other powertrain components, such as transmissions, universal joints, drive shafts, and front/rear axle components, can be stressed beyond design safety limits by the installation of these devices.

General Motors does not support or endorse the use of devices or modifications that, when installed, increase the engine horsepower and torque.

These same policies apply as they relate to the use of non-GM accessories. Damage or failure from the use or installation of a non-GM accessory will not be covered under warranty. Failure resulting from the alteration or modification of the vehicle, including the cutting, welding or disconnecting of the vehicle's original equipment parts and components will void the warranty.

Additionally, dealers will NOT be reimbursed or compensated by GM in the event of any legal inquiry at either the local, state or federal level that results from the alteration or modification of a vehicle using non-GM approved parts or accessories.

Dealers should be especially cautious of accessory companies that claim the installation of their product will not void the factory warranty. Many times these companies have even given direction on how to quickly disassemble the accessory in an attempt to preclude the manufacturer from finding out that is has been installed.

Any suspect repairs should be reviewed by the Area Service Manager (District Service Manager in Canada) for appropriate repair direction. If it is decided that a goodwill repair is to be made on the vehicle, even with the installation of such non-GM approved components, the customer is to be made aware of General Motors position on this issue and is to sign the appropriate goodwill documentation required by General Motors.

It is imperative for dealers to understand that by installing such devices, they are jeopardizing not only the warranty coverage, but also the performance and reliability of the customer's vehicle.

Fuel System - TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline

Bulletin No.: 04-06-04-047G

Date: November 28, 2006

INFORMATION

Subject:
TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline (Deposits, Fuel Economy, No Start, Power, Performance, Stall Concerns) - U.S. Only

Models:
2007 and Prior GM Passenger Cars and Trucks (including Saturn) (U.S. Only)
2003-2007 HUMMER H2 (U.S. Only)
2006-2007 HUMMER H3 (U.S. Only)
2005-2007 Saab 9-7X (U.S. Only)

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add additional sources to the Top Tier Fuel Retailers list. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-06-04-047F (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System). In Canada, refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 05-06-04-022C

A new class of fuel called TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is appearing at retail stations of some fuel marketers. This gasoline meets detergency standards developed by four automotive companies. All vehicles will benefit from using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline over gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Those vehicles that have experienced deposit related concerns may especially benefit from the use of TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.

Intake valve: 10,000 miles with TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline

Intake valve: 10,000 miles with Legal Minimum additive Gasoline

Brands That Currently Meet TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standards

As of November 15, 2006, all grades of the gasoline brands shown meet the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standards.

What is TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is a new class of gasoline with enhanced detergency. It meets new, voluntary deposit control standards developed by four automotive companies that exceed the detergent requirements imposed by the EPA.

Where Can TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Be Purchased?

The TOP TIER program began on May 3, 2004. Some fuel marketers have already joined and have introduced TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline. This is a voluntary program and not all fuel marketers will offer this product. Once fuel marketers make public announcements, they will appear on a list of brands that meet the TOP TIER standards.

Where Can I find the Latest Information on TOP TIER Fuel and Retailers?

On the web, please visit www.toptiergas.com for additional information and updated retailer lists.

Who developed TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards were developed by four automotive companies: BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota.

Why was TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline developed?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline was developed to increase the level of detergent additive in gasoline. The EPA requires that all gasoline sold in the U.S. contain a detergent additive. However, the requirement is minimal and in many cases, is not sufficient to keep engines clean. In order to meet TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards, a higher level of detergent is needed than what is required by the EPA. Also, TOP TIER was developed to give fuel marketers the opportunity to differentiate their product.

Why did the four automotive companies join together to develop TOP TIER?

All four corporations recognized the benefits to both the vehicle and the consumer. Also, joining together emphasized that low detergency is an issue of concern to several automotive companies.

What are the benefits of TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline will help keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Clean engines help provide optimal fuel economy and performance and reduced emissions. Also, use of TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline will help reduce deposit related concerns.

M6 TSBs? any for hard shifting or clutch not disengaging. i cant find any.

I had this problem. Clutch stopped working / would not disengage. Happened slowly over about a day. Couldn't shift gears at all unless shutting the engine off (but then you would have to start the car in gear). Dealer fixed it under warranty. They replaced clutch, throwout bearing, slave & master cylinders, and hydralic tubing. It's been fine ever since (1 year now).

The clutch plate to flywhel bolts were not installed tight enough at the factory.

Here is the TSB:

04-07-31-003 JUN 04 M/T - Loss of Clutch/Low Pedal Height/Hard to Shift.

Search on the TSB number or description - the full text is here somewhere.

Stock rims and tires? Ever had an alignment (4 wheel or cradle)? Tire hitting the fender isn't a common problem (unless it's in the rear and your stock springs are sagging)...

I might suggest having your dealer do a rear cradle alingment. There's got to be something terribly wrong with your car's suspension to have this happen. Front or back? I see you have a 2006... did your VIN fall into the range where Monroe Australia supplied defective struts to Holden? All cars built from mid-January through early May are potentially affected by this problem... I might see this issue happening in the front if your struts are totally blown...

Nexstar, I think that is my sound also! sort of a dinging, I think mine is from the front passenger dash area, near the windshield maybe, it is so hard to exactly pinpoint it. I thought maybe even from the console storage box........ did you figure yours out?

06's do have onstar

No. No they don't. If you have seen one, they installed it (for some stupid reason or another) aftermarket. If someone says they have it, they are lying to you unless you see it. It was not an option on any GTO of any year.

Very true but he made that post almost two years ago, I don't think there is still anyone who believes that any GTOs had Onstar.
Of course if anyone else makes that claim, just ask them to post a pic of the Onstar antenna on the outside of the vehicle. ;)

The flat spot is normal on the stock exhaust. Maybe they do it for easier install?

Your car still under warranty? The gauges TSB is free if it is, otherwise it'll cost you some time at the dealer.

re: the shift light, it's not enabled from the factory... GTPprix on here (Also a sponsor, http://www.gtoshiftlight.com) has figured out how to do so - I'm unaware of anyone who can do this. He does periodically make visits to certain parts of the US and can enable your shiftlight with a few minutes access to your ODBII port - otherwise you need to send your cluster in to him...

No the car is well out of it warranty..... I turned the car off and restarted it. It seemed to fix the problem for the moment at least. My car was made in June of 04 so i dont know if it would be an entire cluster or just reprogrammed. As far as the shift light it wouldnt be something i had to have just someting i would like.......

the tsb about gauges (temp) was actually a relief to see, this morn I let the goat warm up for a few minutes, left the house, got about half mile, the cluster starts it's warning beep,I look down-engine hot,I look at the temp gauge-shot up from normal to the red range in about a second, shut it off and coasted to the side of the road, pop the hood, coolants good, upper hose hot, lower hose cool, belts on,engine feels normal, not overheated, turn the key to on,temp reads normal,WTF?drive it to work and back(28 mi.)everythings normal!

I'm now 6 months out of warranty and a diff/axle whine has developed over the last few thousand miles.

Reading other posts then this seems to be related to this TSB:

Component Description: POWER TRAIN: AXLE ASSEMBLY
Bulletin Number: 3387
Bulletin Date: JAN 200X
Vehicle: 2006 Pontiac GTO
Summary: DANA REAR AXLE ENGINEERING EXCHANGE PROGRAM.
(NHTSA ITEM NUMBER – 10016710 )

If I am out of warranty and get a fault covered by a TSB then does that mean that GM is more likely to pick up the repair tab? Or does out of warranty mean out of luck whether there's a TSB or not?

Would anyone have the full transcript of this particular TSB please? I've been unable to find it on Mitchell1 or anywhere else within the reach of Google.

From other posts, then the GM approach to fixing a noisy axle is to swap it out with the part alone costing over $2k. Not very attractive if paying for it yourself. Any recommendations on where else to go for a more cost effective repair? I do brakes and electrical stuff myself but not feeling inclined to rebuild the diff on my driveway.

call me a complete noob but I have never bought a car without the factory warranty. A few weeks ago I bought an 05' w/20k miles. I did the usual stuff ran the carfax, ran the GMVIS and test drove it. I loved the car and still do, but on the GMVIS there are many of these TSB's that were nto addressed. Will the dealer fix these even though the car is out of warranty?

call me a complete noob but I have never bought a car without the factory warranty.

Not for free. Unless you have a pre-existing relationship with that particular dealer, you can expect to be charged for any TSB repairs at the usual hourly rate.

LS2 oil consumption issues - has happened to some six-speed GTO and Corvette owners who drive aggressively... keep checking the oil, document everything (date/time/if oil added/receipts for oil and oil changes), just to be safe, and you'll be fine...

There is a TSB on this. if ur LS2 consumes more than 1qt in 1000 miles, GM will replace the pistons and piston rings. Had someone on this board e-mail me, he found the TSA, took it to the dealer. they locked his dipstick and oil filler cap so they could determine if it consumed more than 1qt in a 1000 miles. it did and they rebuild the motor under warranty.

Is there any TSB about the weep holes clogging causing the interior to flood?
