Looking for input on a black rim (18” or bigger) that is lightweight for the 2006 GTO. Don’t want to have to roll fenders or anything, just want to save some unsprung rotating weight to pick up speed without anymore engine work at this time. If I missed the answer to this topic in a search I apologize in advance to all those I may offend! Thank you.

You are going to be spending a lot, if you want lightweight wheels. Check TireRack or another site for BBS and SSR wheels.

Good to see you're already promoting the AR1's Rob :) These wheels weigh in at 21.2 pounds each for the 17x8, so I'm guessing the 18's might be a pound or two heavier...still slightly less weight than the stock 17's and 18's. The AR1's are affordable and ASA licensed the BBS casting process, so you know they're going to be well engineered wheels. And there's only a few guys on the forum running them so far, in either black/polished lip or silver...I haven't seen anyone on the forum with chrome ones yet.

On an unrelated note, at one point, before I got really involved with racing, I was thinking about doing a staggered setup with the AR1 in 17" up front and 18" in back. I think that would look sweet!

I'm planning on running the 17x8's on all 4, and getting a pair of 17x9's for the MT streets for the track.

Axis makes a wheel (the Reverb) which is pretty light. It uses hollow cast spokes to remove some weight. The 17's I was looking at for my talon only weighed 16lbs (17x7). Off the top of my head, I am not sure if they have the wheel in a size appropriate for the GTO. I'll see if I can dig up the specs on them...

I am afraid to pull the Verde wheels off of my goat and weigh them (they were on the car when I bought it)

What do Drift-R's weight? I know they are not super light, but are they less than stockers?

According to smartgecko.com, the stock GTO 17" are 26 lbs., the stock 18" are 29 lbs., the ROH Drift 18" by 8" weigh 25 lbs. and the ROH Drift 18" by 9" weigh 27 lbs. So, less than stock but not by much. I hope to get to weigh mine in August.

Thanks to all for the input on the rims. As for saving a pound or two per rim it does add up. Used to race stock cars and unsprung weight had 10 to 1 results. Meaning that for every pound of unsprung weight you saved your car reacted like it was ten pounds lighter. So if you save 2 pounds a rim times 4 rims you will save 8 pounds and your car should react like it were 80 pounds lighter. Add that to a light weight clutch, flywheel, etc and you will not show any more horsepower, but your car will be quicker.
