I use DP wheels cleaner, which you can use on wheels, tires and wells. It seems to be doing its job good, and it smells pretty good. For tire dressing I use wolfgang Onyx Black and for the wheels DP Wheel Wax.

Mother's Paste Wax on Stock 18's.
To clean, I use mother's wheel cleaner which specifies it can be used on clear coated wheels. The outside of our wheels seem to be cleared, the inside is just a quick spritz of paint from the cheap factory.
To remove the asphalt that usually accumulates on the inside of the wheel I use a little paint thinner on a rag, dissolves it immediately and doesn't seem to affect the cheap single coat of paint they sprayed onto the inside of the wheel. I wipe the area with water then to remove any residual chemical.
Then I apply the mother's paste wax.
I do have all of the zaino products as well, but they are such a pain in the ass to apply in terms of time consumption. Paste wax is a no brainer for painted/cleared wheels.

I'll have to agree with sliver. I just keep them clean with auto soap and keep a layer of cleaner wax on them for protection and easy brake dust removal. Cleaner wax is a lazy and mediocre way to keep the rest of your car detailed, but I figure its okay for wheels.
I never heard of using thinner to get rid of asphalt/tar, but that seems like it would work. I use 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (http://www.goferauto.com/3mgepuadcl08.html) that comes in an aerosol can. It works great for getting the crud out of those hard to reach corners on the 17" wheels. I spray a little on and scrub with a tooth brush. On the inside of the wheels, I'm able to spray this stuff around the entire thing and wipe off with a towel. All that black film just melts right off. It'll take any protectant with it, though, so you need to follow it up with your choice of wax.
Good luck!

So the mothers carubana (spelling?) wax can go on my wheels also?

Absolutely. The factory wheels are powder/clear-coated, so you can treat the finish like you would on the rest of your car. That's why you don't want to use any kind of harsh wheel cleaner that contains acid or other chemicals only meant for polished or chrome wheels.
