I want to know what the biggest rear tire size I can run with no problems? I would like to go with a 275/40/17 nitto drag radial

I've been asking the same questions of people in the know. I've been told 275/35/19's will work with minimal rubbing, 275/45/17's work with minimal rubbing. I've also heard Nitto's run wide and drag tires run wide....
So basically I'm no help.

The info that both of you have is about as extensive as it gets right now. 275 is the widest. Good luck

Depends on actual tire (many tires run big or small) and offset of the wheel you are running. There's no specific tire size.

Mine go on tomorrow - I'll let you know how it goes. I think several others have already done this with no rubbing. Nittos are supposed to run small. The issue (for some) is that technically a 275 shouldn't go on an 8" wide wheel.

Ah nevermind, forgot about the Nitto 555r 245/45/17s.

Why not pick up a pair of inexpensive, light weight wheels for the rear you can run drag radials on just for racing?

My tires are about shot, another week or two ought to be about it. What are most of you putting on the stock wheels front and rear? Brand, and sizes?

I have a set of 26x10.50x15 et streets on aluminum wheels in the garage but the wheels are a different size and I hate changing them at the track. I am thinking about selling the et streets and using some of the money to get so nittos

I intalled 275/40/17 Pirelli P7000 wheels on a 8" wheel years ago, no problems at all.

275/40/17 fit in the rear with no rubbing at all. This could be my best mod yet. These tires bite like a rabid pit bull.

You have 275 Nitto 555Rs on stock wheels with no fender-rolling?
GTOWILL

that is correct...the guys that put them on wanted nothing to do with rolling fenders so I told them to try the 275s and if they don't fit to just put on the 245s. I guess it's true what I've heard about Nittos, they run a bit small.

I thought Nitto's ran wide? But, I don't really know all that much about tires though, I usually just go with Goodyear because they are safe.

That would be cool, got any recommendations? The Pontiac Stock 17" Wheels are $345 each. I am looking for a solution that will hook up on the strip, not cost as much as custom wheels, say less than a grand with tires, and not make me have to resort to "any" body work on the rear fenders.
I'd love to have a set of Drag Racing Radials or Slicks for 500-700 dollars that I could use to run occaisionally either taking them to the track and changing them or change them at home and drive to the track. I drive daily on the highest speed and most dangerous freeway in the world in Dallas and would prefer not to have a daily driving tire with weak sidewalls, we have some banked high five turns that resemble Daytona with speed typically approaching 100mph in heavy traffic.
I would consider a street tire that would give me a better hook up than the stock factory tires since I don't race that often, mostly when I make a mod. Fact is a streetable combination that would give me fiar to good hook up at the strip and still be safe for the freeway grand nationals would be the ultimate. I figured that wheels and tires as wide as possible on the back might even do the trick regardless of the brand, but I disagree with the concept that rubbing a little is better than rubbing a lot.
I am interested int he concept of rolling the rear fenders if that would offer an opportunity for a cheaper rear wheels solution but I have to confess I have no idea what that entails.

Goodrich points out their Drag Racing Radials, while streetable, are not in any way meant as daily drivers. Do the Nitto Tires not have that same constraint?

Well, alot of people use these terms loosely. It's not usually that tires run wide or narrow, it's actually usually the "shape" of the sidewall-to-tread, or shoulder area. Some tires are more "square", and subsequently look wider and pose a problem with impacting the fender (such as BFGs and Yokos). However, tires likethe nitto and toyo have more rounded shoulders, effectively reducing the chance to catch the fender.

I'm learning - just put a pair of Yoko AVS tires 275/40/zr17 on the stock rims in the rear. I'm getting rubbing but, not on the outside. Anybody else experience this? It's only with launches and hard cornering.

Do you know where you are rubbing? If not, throw some chalk all up in there than launch it hard, and then look for rubbing marks.

Ok...Stupid question. Would the Nitto 275/40's in an 18" diameter be any different than the 17's?? Just trying to figure this thing out...
Thanks in advance.

I figured out where my 275 yokos were rubbing - I took pics - If you bend the area in a little with a hammer they stop rubbing.

Why not just buy some takeoffs others are selling from their GTO's? You can get them fairly cheap. Go to Parts for Sale section... :wall: mine will be for sale soon...

Yeah, they would be 1" taller and probably rub even more. You'd want 275/35 in 18s.
