Thanks in advance

Thanks, I needed that info also, but was afraid to ask. You have to be careful when you ask a question on this board because there are lots of people who like to get pissy about the search engine. It's nice to have someone just answer the question without being an ass about it.

Yah, that's why I only post when I really have to. I have seen alot of posts where people ask a simple question that may have been covered before. Then they get hammered into submission...never to be heard of again. "Use the search button"...blah, blah, blah...Whatever...fuggin whiners.

This board has changed alot because of that. Everyone is whining about something.

Well, here's the problem. When you are on here all the time, and see the same questions asked over and over again, it get's old, ESPECIALLY when the answer is a quick search and read away. I put in the EXACT title to this thread "Stock Wheel Specs" in the search and I am given numerous threads that have ALL this info within the first couple posts. There is even a thread EXACTLY like this that comes up about 10 listings down in the search. It CLUTTERS the boards to have new posts up all time about the same thing.

The main problem isn't even that, it's the people who don't search at all, but still post the little blurb "I already searched and found nothing" just so noone flames them. Not saying that happened here, but the same question, over and over, get's old...

Yah, I guess I'm whining about the whiners...oh well. I just got back from driving my GTO home from a late dinner...What a blast. I really do understand the SEG factor. There is something different about this car, I just haven't got my finger on it yet. UH...OK...Time to get over and re-charge my luck meter.

I understand...I use the search function ALL THE TIME...it is very useful. I know what you are referring to regarding the repetitive threads and your response was appropriate. I was really refering to the people who are rude in replying to questions...which happens alot. The thing is, alot of these rude folks are the ones representing this board.

:bs:
Not for me, just got a bunch of threads that have the word Stock , Wheel and Specs somewhere in the post. You must be a better searcher than I am. Or know how to wade through the BS to find the answer you are looking for. I found specs for 18" wheels though. And plenty of posts that had nothing to do with what I was looking for at all. So the "Search Button" may be our acquaintance, but it is not our friend.

posts in this thread about the search function: 13

Amen, bro. Preach it.

Here's the fitment "bible":

GTO wheel pattern and offset
NEW BOLT PATTERN FOR GENERAL MOTORS 5-120!
GTO IS ACTUALLY A HOLDEN MONARO FROM AUSTRALIA

Factory wheels & tires:
17x8 w/ 245/45/17
55lbs each (wheel & tire)
5x120mm stud pattern
48mm backspacing

WIDTH...........OFFSET..............WIDTH OF TIRE
7.0...............+26/+65..............215/225/235
7.5...............+33/+61..............215/225/235/ 245
8.0...............+39/+55..............225/235/245
8.5...............+45/+48..............235/245/255
9.0.(MAX).........+48..................245/255

REAR ONLY
8.0................+36/+65...............245/255
8.5................+42/+65...............245/255
9.0................+48/+65...............255/265/2 75
9.5................+55/+64...............265/275/2 85

My question is this: how come the above is not a sticky? If the mods would do that, with a title like "STOCK WHEEL SPECS AND WHAT FITS AND WHAT DOESN'T SO THAT WE DON'T HAVE TO WHINE AND MOAN A LOT ABOUT REPOSTS AND DO A SEARCH AND SO WE'LL ALL BE A LOT HAPPIER" then, well, you know, we'll all be a lot happier and not have to whine and moan about reposts and doing a search and all that. IMHO.

Yes, of course you make a good point. And I'll first admit my FIRST post was a little sarcastic, BUT I was planning to post the info, and saw that you already had - just ended up posting a little blurb instead. But I never said anything like "use the search button". One thing is this should be in a sticky. Mainly because (and causing my post) I myself have posted this info it seems a million times. Most of the time, the question is asked in the middle of a minorly-related post, and answered in the post, which does make it more difficult to find in the search function. But on the other hand, IMHO, if you are asking for this information (size, offset, hub diameter) it would be VERY helpful to do the search and read all the posts that have transpired on this subject, and incidently you'd find all the info you needed, PLUS more.

Amen!!! But make sure you indicate that's only a starting reference, and (unlike the true Bible) not the official all-encompassing truth. Lest :) I remind you of those people who insist that's "not" the bible because they have such-an-such on their car, and "only in hard turns do they rub", or they "only had to roll their fenders".

Padre, thanks for the "bible".

Quick stupid question, when you list backspacing for each wheel width, are those a *range* of offset backspacing, i.e. when you list backspacing for a rear 9.5" wheel, backspacing between +55mm and +64mm is good?

Extremely valuable info. I'm looking at wheels by Fikse.

PadreGTO
02-27-2005, 05:57 PM
Yes, Hawkeye, that's the range of offsets. But that range is extended by rolling the rear fenders. Not much you can do with the fronts, plus not much you can change to help with rubbing on the inside, aside from radical work that BMR has done.

The fitment bible was originally taken from Discount Tire. These may not be exactly the bible, as Tire Rack has a more conservative version of what is appropriate for the GTO. Members of this board have had rubbing (frequently on only one side) while adhering to these guidelines, while other have gotten fitments to work without rubbing that were outside these specs. The safest bet is to be nearer the middle of the range, as you get to the outer limits the variation in manufacturing tolerances comes into play.

Good luck finding wheels. When I first bought my GTO I thought there were almost no good choices. The people here have mounted an interesting assortment of wheels, with much more creativity than if there were already dozens of wheels that easily fit...

PadreGTO
02-27-2005, 06:15 PM
Aye, Tire Rack is more conservative because they sell only hubcentric wheels. That's another factor to consider. However, we're working on some centering rings to fit the common aftermarket rims people buy (like me) that are not hubcentric.

Anyway, I hope this sticky will be useful to people and we can post here the information most new owners are looking for.

Does this mean I could put the C5 rims on my car if I went with the 17x8 all the way around? I guess I could do a search on "hebcentric", I have no idea what that means.

Hubcentric means that the hub center of the wheel matches the outside diameter of the vehicles hub, so that when you put the wheel up on the lugs to torque it down, it does not move (slips on over the hub), this way the lugs will be automatically centered within the lug holes of the wheel.

No, C5 rims do not fit on the front of the GTO. The wheels are 8.5" wide, and have a 56mm offset which is too high. You'd need about 15mm spacers, and new lug bolts.

C5 rims are also 120.65mm bolt pattern, IIRC. There's some debate about whether or not that would still fit, but no major wheel seller offers anything but 120mm for the GTO, so I wouldn't do it.

Wheels with this bolt pattern will "fit", as it's been tried many times. HOWEVER, and that's a big however, there's concern that there will be stress fractures over time, you could break off the hub bolts, mess up the suspension, lord knows what else :)

There are plenty of slick looking wheels in 5x120, stick with those. :)
