View Full Version : What do you pay for mounting and balancing?

I just bought a set of used factory 17" wheels and some Potenza RE-01Rs then I got some shocking prices to get the tires mounted. Tires Plus wanted $137 and my local Goodyear dealer wanted $98. Does this seem way to high? I used to work in a tire shop when I was in high school (90-93) and we would do that type of work for about $40. It would take 10-20 minutes for loose wheels.
I wound up getting them mounted and balanced at a local gas station for $56.
Is it just the tire shops that rape people on mounting prices?

That price should include 4-wheel alignment. Maybe it does? If it's just mounting, you're gonna be takin' it up the pooper.

Nothing. :wall:
I do my own as I work at a shop. But most shops will charge at least $8.00 a tire. I see most @ $10.00 around here.

I think it is $20 per tire in South Florida. I have seen some places that do it for $15 per tire.

Do you get strip weights?
I just remembered to check my wheels after I got my new front tires mounted at Tires Plus. I haven't looked from under the car, but I see that my strip weights are gone. I assume that they hammered in the regular weights on the inside. Time to climb under and check.

No strip weights- they just used the regular hammer on weights on the inside of the rim. I've never had a problem with those type of weights coming off in the past. Anyone have problems with the hammer on weights on stock 17" wheels?

I agree about going to a shop instead of a gas station, but I used to work at this gas station years ago and still know some people there. They did a great job- no scratches at all.

yeah sometimes you get good stuff done at a station... i went to NTB about 2 summers ago and they charged me almost 200 bucks to mount 4 tires on wheels i brought in... then they stripped all my lugs/studs and charged me another 200 ... i wont be going back.
