View Full Version : I finally made a wheels decision...19's

Well, after months of mildly looking and then lately a couple of weeks of extremely stressful looking... i found the set of wheels that are going to go on my GTO. I have already purchased them and they are enroute to my front door. I searched high and low for 18's that were uncommon to the GTO community but they either don't make them anymore, or back ordered for months and they might not be coming back into stock. So i thought there was nothing left and I was going to have to give into getting a common wheel or just keep the 17's.

But after reading a post from this forum about VQmotoring.com I gave them a shot. I told them that I did not want to modify my suspension or cut/roll my fenders and I wanted some wheels that i can rotate. They did a search of inventory and found only 1 set of 18's but were staggered and the only other option was 19's and they only had 2 different sets. The choices were 19'' Ruff R279 Hyper Black and 19" Ruff R281 Black. I knew at least one person on here if not a couple already had the 279's and I havent seen anyone with the 281's. So I chose the 281's in black. Now i'm eagerly waiting for them to arrive. I just hope they fit properly. The guy I talked with said that he has put wheels on tons of new GTO's and he knows its not going to be a problem, but he also said that he has never come across someone like me that wanted 19's that weren't staggered. Anyone else have 19's that aren't staggered?

Here is a link to a picture of the wheels I purchased. 19x8.5

Here is a link to the 279s that I was considering also. My opinion, this is a very nice looking wheel. http://www.vqmotoring.com/Wheels%20By%20Manufactur er/Ruff%20Racing/r279hyperblack.jpg

Very nice bro. I don't have a unstaggered set, but I love em. Ride is awesome and the fit makes the car look sick. 19's FTW..

I have a set of 19" staggered 279's (hyperblack) that I purchased from them also... Rickie and Ceasar are great to work with.... I have been very pleased with my purchase from them... I did have a slight rub with the 9.5 on the rear so I wouldn't expect you will have any issues with yours....

According to your sig...you have 2 goats.

Which one are they going on? I'm not a fan of black on black, but those on the BOM would look sweet!!

Ya those 279's are very nice. It took me a over a day to decide between the 279 and 281s. I even asked some of my friends which they thought looked better. Everyone of them pointed out that they like the 279s better, but i said screw it and i'm going with my instinct on this one. And ya Rickie at VQMotoring.com was awesome and he had great info to all of the questions that i had. Very easy purchase. I would recommend them anyday.

Its going on the Black GTO. The soon to be Ex-wife currently has the Brazen GTO, and when the paperwork is finalized more than likely she will have to sell it.

Hope you get what you paid for....
VQMotoring FTL. They sent me the wrong offsets, didnt properly balance my tires, and there were some other minor things that they didnt do. They also didnt keep in touch or anything I was the one that had to initiate, in order to get information about how my problems will be fixed. They also would not aknowledge the fact that I wanted a refund after waiting too long....my card is currently taking care of it...

Sorry for the rant, but other should know that this could happen. Good luck with your wheels and post pics.

I have been following your post since yesterday. Your car came out looking great.. Congrats.. Im glad you did what a said, you rolled the fenders like i always recommend with a 9.5 and the car works fine.. I always tell this to all my customers and they end up all happy in the end..
Your car looks awesome once again, im sure you already know that!!

Take Care, and thanks again, please call us if you have any questions in the future.

I dont get it...Did you actually read my post?:wall:
The wheels arent even on the car, and they havent been on aside from testing them the night day I picked them up.

I dont want to shit on this guy's thread, so I will keep the rest to myself...

There is a guy on here with the 281s but they're a staggered 19/20 combo and chrome. Regardless I think the non-staggered 19" combo on a PBM with the black centered wheels is going to look amazing AS LONG AS the lips aren't more than 2" all around. More than a 2" lip on the front of any car looks wrong to me.

I can't wait to see the 281s in black on NRG car.. They should look great. If anyone else is planning to get a staggered setup, please make plans to roll your fenders. It is something we always state and something very easy to get done.. The GTO has an excess of like 5mm of inner fender you can bend. This will let you have that great staggered / aggressive look on your GTO.. Just take it to a good shop to get that done if needed.. When modding a car, most of the time you have to sacrifice on thing to get something else.

Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks to all!!

know a guy with 19s... Nice fit. He has like 2 tyres he can choose from too. 19s just aren't a "serious" size apparently. I'm going 18x10? just for tyre choices.

I was very concerned with performance loss going with 19s, moving the rotating mass outwards and what not. I must say that I shaved off over 12 lbs per wheel/tire and there is a SOTP improvement over my stock 18s, not only in acceleration but steering input and response. The ride quality is really no different either, so a good lightweight 19 is a great choice.

Totally agree. I see or feel no difference in performance from the 17 to the 19. I do feel the steering to be more responsive and more crisp. And I also agree that the ride quality is really minimal between the two.

Explain?

Any issues after putting a few miles on the combo? I'm looking for the same thing. Ability to rotate, no susp. mods, no fender rolling etc...18's or 19's.
Ride quality compared to stock?

Wow you could not be more wrong my friend. The 235s I have on now are twice as sticky on launches than my 245s ever were. And now i dont have a strut rub issue.

235/35/19 > Stock 245/45/17

I put about 700-800 miles on my 19's so far. Still love them. No issues at all. The handling and steering feel more precise and crisp. It seems to stick better on launches with alot less wheel spin... I don't know why, but it does. Common sense tells me it should be the other way around and the 245/45/17 should have the better launching, but it didn't in my case.

The ride quality is awesome. Before I bought the 19's, i was imagining how horrible the ride quality was going to be with 19's over my 17s. I was wrong and I worried over nothing. The 19's ride great. Very little difference in my opinion.. if any at all. The only time I notice anything different or more harsh, is when I hit a small pot whole. The jarring effect is a tiny bit more than the 17s, but other than that nothing. On the road and freeway, they are very smooth.

Oh and the 19s turn alot of heads now. I used to turn some heads with my car's stock wheels, and custom exhaust... Now everyone turns their heads. Huge difference on attention level. Right after I got my wheels put on, I was cruising around and I hit a stop light, the car next to me was full of people and I looked over and everyone was staring at my car, even the people on the far side of the car were leaning over and sticking their head out of the windows to look at my ride. It was funny.

Perfect wheel selection...I'd like the same for my PBM. Classic and classy.

Now about that red GTO sticker on the side rear rocker...gotta go.

There are 4 GTO logos one on each side already. You don't need that sticker IMO.

Wheels + 1, sticker -2.

Hehehe thanks for the compliment. As for the rocker panel stickers, those are just sexy. They aren't going anywhere. Its reflective red and glows really well around dusk time. And besides, it matchs the brake calipers and the tail lights. I actually have a crazy.......crazy idea up my sleeve that I think i'm going to be doing here shortly to the car. Something that has never been done to a GTO before. I just have to go to a few shops and see if its possible.

^^^^That's a lil small. I would just roll them. It's not all that hard, just time consuming. Either that or get some $98 dragbags. Believe me you're gonna want to run at least some 265's(optimum = 275's). You won't be dissapointed.

I would recommend you to roll the fenders... We have done this setup way too many times. I think everyone has had to roll them. It’s a very easy thing to do and it’s a small compromise to get such a great look!

At the least, i would recommend you running a 245/40/18 and 265/35/18..
