View Full Version : How risky is it to go one size over on wheels?

I have a 06 with 17 inch sitting on 245 width factory tires.
Its time for a swap and I wanna go one size plus.
Problem is I know alot of GTOs get tire rub against the strut.
The factory 18 inchers come with thinner tires, 235.
If I go 18 inch on 245 what are the chances they will rub?
I know it sounds like a noob question but seriously, I never heard of such a high performance car with such a BS issue!

I believe there are several people on this forum that are running 245's on their 18".

I wouldn't, there's almost no room there at all with the 235s.

I'm running 19's with 235/35 no problems and I could go to 245/35 with no problem.
But that's where the fun ends due to 40mm offset w/out cutting into the car which I'm not about to do.

jeffemac - another member in this board is running 245s at all four corners with his 18in. stockers. He says he has never had issue one with rubbing.
I m running 245 with 40 offset wheels , fits fine , no rub under normal conditions .
It rubs when I have three buddies in the car and go over bumps , thats about it

You didn't specifically say if you're going with factory 18's or something else. If it's the former, then you may want to choose your brand of tire wisely (rounded shoulder). However, if it's the latter option with a typical 35-40mm offset then you'll be fine regardless of brand... btw, this is only relevant to the front strut rub issue.

I've had 18x7.5 38" offset w/245-40-18's on my car since I picked it up new in '04. No rubbing w/Michelin PS2's.

I run 255/40R18's in the winter, on the stockers with no problems.

As I read your post, I wasn't quite sure what you're asking. Are you looking to run wider tires on your stock 17" wheels, or switch to stock 18" wheels, and go wider than the 235's?
If you're asking can you put stock 18's on and run a 245, then yes. I'm running 245/40/18 all around, and there's no rubbing at all with about 10,000 miles on them.
From what I understand, you also cannot just assume that every 235 is as wide as every other 235, and so on. The overall width of the tire varies from brand to brand and model to model. At least that's what I uderstood.

The rims Im looking at are aftermarket and have a 45mm offset. I'll be using either Yokohama ES100 or BFGoodrich KDW 2s.

...just don't plan on getting any springs that are lower the OEM height either.
