Are you more concerned with appearances or which one works better? Your comparing apples to oranges.

yeah, you cannot compare stock size front tires to 275/40's for the rear...

WTF?!?!?!
If using a stock 17x8 rim, it is not really a good idea. You are forcing the sidewalls in, and limiting the amount of tread contacing the ground during a launch and higher speeds. If you are going to get a 275-40-17 drag radial, get a set of 17x9's or 9.5's.
Just an FYI, I have an M-6 and used 245-45-17 Nittos with 20 psi and was able to get a best of a 1.77 60'. So a 275 isn't really needed to get some nice times.

I run 275/40/17 MT DR's on stock wheels and cut low 1.5xx consistently with a PB of 1.49 60'. I know the theory Black Devil has presented but it has not been a problem for me so far. I don't have pics of the MT's but here's a pic of mine with 275/35/18 BFG DR's. The car is sitting on a bit of a side hill so the clearances may look a little off.

They aren't bad but ET streets are worlds better.
The great thing though about Nittos is that you can run them as a daily driver tire. Rain, etc....not a problem.
Plus they run smaller than the BFG or ETs so you shouldn't run into rubbing issues with a good spring.

275/40/17 will fit on stock rims and will not rub without any mods to the body of my GTO?

They will fit on stock rims but you need drag bags at least.

275 nittos w/a little grind or roll on the lip and you're fine...some people don't even have to do that even
