A couple months ago, I asked about rifles. Well, I've finally decided I want to get a Remington 700 .223. Now, my next step...a good scope. What do you guys use, and what would you suggest I look into getting?

Thanks!

Good question...

And just like guns scopes are a plenty and a many. You should get a dozen different answers.

EDIT: yes I know that did not help...

You want good advice? Go to your local Gunsmith -- NOT GUN SHOP - Gunsmith and ask them. As long as they have been in business for a while they will know just what to mount for your application.

even more than with rifles, scopes are a BIG TIME "you get what you pay for" type item. Chances are you will spend far more than you paid for the rifle for good glass to put on it, so do don't cheap out and get one of those $50 Tasco scopes from wal mart.

The important question would be, what is your budget for base, rings, and the scope?

Are you dead set on the .223?

Is this for medium range precision shooting?

can the .223 remington safely handle 5.56?

Well, it's going to all depend on what you're shooting at.

I have a Cooper .223 and have a 6.5-20x Leupold Vari-X III 40mm on it and can't speak highly enough about it. I had a Weaver 6-24x on it (also a 40mm) and it was OK, but definitely not a Leupold in quality. Was not cutting it at 300 yards. So I put that on my .17 which tops out about 240 yards and it's all good there.

So, answer what you're hunting with it and I think a better answer can be given. :)

Remington 700 good choice but get it in .308...
Better yet get one of each...

I have a Remington 700P in .308, it's a nice fun gun to shoot. Unfortunately it's got a shitty little $100 scope on top of it right now, eventually I'll get a nice Leupold, but for now the $100 scope really does the job. I do have a set of nice Leupold rings and mount on there though, well worth the cost. I'm hoping to get the barrel threaded soon for a suppressor.

Officially, not recommended because differences between the 5.56 mil-spec cartridge/bullet can cause unsafe pressures in a .223 barrel-- the chamber throats have different specs. OTOH, I shoot target .223 loads in an AR-15; in fact it has never had a 5.56 mil cartridge in it.

To answer the original poster's question-- there may be others better, certainly more expensive, but you cannot go wrong with Leupold.

Great! I have been looking at the Leupold. It seemed like a good scope for a decent price. I did see a brand on eBay named NC Star. Anyone know about them/have any luck....or is it crap? I will most likely be shooting 300yds max, since I do not think the .223 will be very effective past that distance.

Also 1stChildhood, you are right. The .223 rounds can be shot in a mil-spec 5.56, but not the other way around.

as i understood it general rule of thumb is no 5.56 in .223 but that there were rifles out there chambered in .223 that could handle 5.56

NC Star is cheap China junk from what I have heard.

From what I have read, this is a good scope that won't break the bank. It is supposedly compareable to scopes that are 3x the money. Name is kinda cheesy though.

I have one of those, it's very nice for the money. Good optical clarity and well built.

I would recommend getting one of the above mentioned scopes with a high quality base and ring kit. I use Badger Ordinance rings, have tried several others and they cannot compare to the precise machining and rigidity of the Badgers.

Those are the two I always use.

If you have money to burn you cannot go wrong with a Nightforce, Leupold, or S&B scope.

What the difference between the long action and short action bases?

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out.

You never indicated what sort of shooting you intend to do with the .223 or even specifically which model you bought.

Presumably, it is the regular model 700 that uses a slow twist barrel (1-12 or 1-14?) instead of the 700 PSS which has a 1-9 twist. If so, your rifle is suitable for the 55 grain and lighter bullets and will have an effective range of about 400 yards or less. If you have a PSS you can use 68 to 73 grain bullets and be stable to about 700 yards. If it is a used rifle that has been rebarreled with a 1-8 twist barrel you can shoot 80 grain target bullets and be useful to 1000+ yards.

Totally different scopes required for those different situations.

The scope I have on my .308 is an NC Star. I can say it's not great, but it gets the job done. The magnification on my little $100 scope is like 8-32x I think, I've shot 300y no problem with it and it's fairly solid. One thing I don't like about it is that the adjustment clicks don't always feel totally solid, so when I'm counting clicks sometimes I miss one. No big deal really, what do you expect for $100. As far as the optical quality of the scope, it focuses fine out to 300y or farther and there isn't any distortion on it really. It's no Leupold but it works. I think it's a great scope to get while you're saving for the Leupold.

It has been years since I last did any shooting or bought a scope, but I always bought Leupold. I have three Remington rifles -- 22LR rifle with a Leupold 6X, 7mm-08 with a Leupold 4x, and a 22-250 with Leupold 3-10x. I also have a 4x Leupold mounted on a 22LR T/C Contender barrel.

I never regreted spending the extra $ for the scopes.

Leupold VxII 3x9-40 on my Ruger .270. It rocks. My buddy spent more on his Zeiss (also mounted on a .270) and we both like my VXII better.

I'm going to be putting a Leupold on my Remington 700 when I get it, but I will agree with the rest and say .308. The price of .223 is going to keep going up in price (not that .308 is much better), but it already costs me enough to shoot my AR.

5.56 can shoot .223, but the .223 should not shoot the 5.56...
