when i first heard that TBS was going to carry the MLB playoffs i got pretty pissed. i imagined the worst. also, i don't get TBS in high def, but that's a minor inconvenience. years past, the early playoffs were split between FOX and ESPN.

boy i take back everything i said bad about TBS. cal ripken and tony gwynn? **** yeah. on top of that, i've been watching the pre-game and post game reports, and i find them more interesting and entertaining than even my home team pre-game and post-games on my LOCAL stations! last night they had curtis granderson (DET) on, and he was illustrating the techniques for base stealing in the studio on a mock-up baseball diamond. they were getting into some pretty good detail about pitcher motion and how he likes to fish for a pickoff move. today, they were talking about laying down bunts, and how to bunt for a single, etc.

i just gotta say, props. i'm really enjoying their telecasts. much better than ESPN, where those old farts (jim morgan and john miller) talk about nothing throughout the entire game. earlier this season a cards-phillies game was on sunday night baseball, and i swear they went through an ENTIRE INNING (top AND bottom) without even making one call related to the game. they were talking about the 1980's phillies that went to the series. like hey, that's great, you know there's a ball game on right now...?

hopefully by this time next year TBS-HD will be added to charter st. louis' lineup. oh and also hopefull the redbirds will be on the playoffs roster!

My only complaint earlier this week was no HD. Then, Dish Network added TBS-HD yesterday. :bubbrub

I gotta agree. They've been MUCH better than any Fox broadcast. I still like John and Joe on ESPN Sunday nights more, but TBS is better than any of their other broadcasts.

no HD= major inconvenience.

it's not like you can't watch the games... or listen to the games. i don't sit and watch every play of the games, but they're on my TV. if i'm in the other room i can hear it on the TV, or if i'm plyaing video games i have the TV on xbox and the stereo on TV so i can listen to the game, and flip back to watch a play if i hear something happen exciting.

not having hte game at all = major inconvenience
having the game, but in slightly lesser video quality = minor inconvenience

i don't think there was any chance the games would not be on tv at all. come on man, its mlb playoffs!!

as for "slightly lesser video quality", Anything non HD looks like absolute crap on my 1080. To make it worse, turner teases us by putting the games on tnt-hd for a split second if the interlap each other. After seeing it on tnt-hd, tbs becomes unwatchable.

oh yeah don't get me wrong, i would MUCH rather watch it on an HD channel, but think about this -- last year this time did you even have an HDTV? i did not. not a lot of people did. by this time next year i predict the number of HD channels will increase exponentially, so it's almost a non-issue for future years (as TBS has a multi-year contract for the playoffs, i believe).

and about "any chance of them not being on TV at all", what about people who DON'T have cable? or dish? there are still people in this country who watch only broadcast television. i'm surprised that they didn't simulcast the games on a broadcast network. even when games are on ESPN, ABC will simulcast the games.

and TNT hasn't been airing the games like TBS says they are. might be local broadcast blocking them out for some reason. but even when they overlap, i flip to TNTHD and it's "save the last dance". huh. that's odd!

i certainly notice the difference between SD and HD and i cringe when i flip from one to the other (especially in sports), but after a few minutes of watching the SD broadcast i can tune it out and have it not really be an issue...

i hear ya. my true beef is with time warner cable, they are so behind. Directv is almost at 100 HD NATIONAL channels, dish is getting up there too. Time warner supplies me with about 20 on their "premium" package. It's sad. I can't stand the fact that fsn is not HD. I can't watch my local teams in HD?!! ridiculous! I will be switching to directv as soon as i move out of this apt. But i do get TNTHD so when they do run the game on there, it looks frickin amazing.
Hockey is almost unwatchable in non hd on the 60". I go and watch it in the bedroom on the regular 27" tv. It looks a lot better on that. But when VS runs it in HD, its sick!

I really liked Tony Gwynn's prescense in the booth...with a little bit of Bob Brenly in there as well. I've actually enjoyed watching the games....where usually once it hits the playoffs it's a snooze for me...

last night i could swear the announcers were rootin for the yank$. it was startin' to piss me off. gayrod hits a homer to make it 6-2 and the dude is screaming like he just gave them the lead. The indians score and he goes "clevland gets another one". douchebag. I was trash talkin the tv as the game was prgressing, lol. I wanted to call him and go "yeah bitch!" lol

wow, I guess I'm in the minority about thinking their broadcast and announcers suck the big one. it's like listening to Bill Belichek announce a game...B-O-R-I-N-G!!

oh, and yes I do feel they are biased

direcTV is misleading. i guarantee you that if you got direcTV you are NOT getting 100 HD channels. i think what they are saying is that they have 100 stations around the nation that are in HD. for instance in st. louis we have CBS, NBC, FOX, and ABC affiliates who broadcast in HD. you won't get those channels if you lived in seattle, or miami. i have charter digital in st. louis and went over to a friend's house who has direcTV, i actually had 2 more HD channels than he did.

about FSN, that's FSN's fault. FSN here only broadcasts ~30 games/year in high def. it's pretty shitty, but it's actually up from about 12 games last year. on top of that, every ESPN broadcast is in HD, and KSDK (our local NBC affiliate) airs every sunday game and some other weekends games in HD. but the bottom line is that FSN is too cheap to air every game in HD, so 90% of the games are in SD which kind of sucks.

that's possible, and that's why i hate national broadcasts. i think there are two reasons why they might have sided with the yankees - first, they were underdogs. if you had to side with one team, it might as well be the one that is on the verge of extending the series. after all, the commentators can be unbiased, but still want to see an exciting series. therefor in their minds they are always looking to extend the series. if team x is 2 runs down in the bottom of the 9th, and they hit a home run making it a 1 run game, how can you not get excited? doesn't matter what team it is, close games with a team battling to survive and not get elminated are exciting.

the other possible reason is that they were siding with the larger market. obvious there are more new yorkers watching the telecast than clevelandites, and more yankees fans than indians fans. but don't worry indians fans, if you get to the world series everyone will be siding with the AL!

Anybody and everybody involved with baseball on TBS. Just horrible in every possible way. Including my team.

tony gwynn? cal ripken? are you serious? any specific reasons? or you just hate them?

No, its 100 NATIONAL hd channels.meaning anyone can get them, they are not regional channels. I looked at the lineup online, its sick. even FSN is HD. Cable just sucks. My friend has directv, right now he has 50 something HD channels, they are promising 100 by the end of the year!

well, that's complete bullshit because they don't offer 100 HD channels in st. louis. are you sure that they don't meant 100 "digital" channels?

and also, be wary of that "FSN HD". we "get" FSN HD in st louis, but like i said, they never broadcast on it. it's always "Off-Air" unless they are broadcasting a cards game, which was 30/160 times this year. so in other words YES you will get FSNHD but will they broadcast on it? it's literally colorbars if you turn it on when they aren't broadcasting, they don't even record "best damn sports show" or anything in HD.

they're not up to 100 yet. its in the 50s right now i think. Still more than double my 21 channels on cable's "premium" package.
As for fsnhd, thats good to know. That's pretty lame. We have 4 local sports network here, MSG,SNY,YES and FSN. FSN is the only one not in hd. It really pissed me off because the Devils are on FSN.

nsr
10-09-2007, 08:11 PM
well don't take my absolute word on FSN -- it certainly could vary from region to region. it sounds like you are hard-set on getting direcTV so it's a moot point, but FSN-midwest is cheap as hell when it comes to the HD.

luckily st louis has a pretty good selection of local channels. KPLR used to be a totally solo st. louis broadcast network, but the recently switched to WB-11 and now CW-11. regardless, they broadcast in HD and carry a lot of sporting events. i haven't watched any blues games this year, but they used to carry the blues in years past, and used to carry the cardinals on the weekends (until KSDK, NBC affiliate who took over) in HD. but i have hard that NY/NJ has a pretty solid lineup of sports networks. i mean c'mon, YES? isn't that a YANKEES sports channel? i would KILL for an exclusive cardinals sports channel! during their "down time" they could just replay game 7 of the '06 NLCS, game 5 of the '05 NLCS, and game 5 of the '06 WS over and over and over and over..... **** yeah....

yes=yankees own channel
