For the more geekily-inclined, picked up a PSP this morning. Damn, that thing is fantastic. For a hand-held, WipeOut Pure is drop dead gorgeous and Dynasty Warriors is as good as I remember. Watched a little of Spider Man 2; the UMB format seems pretty nice for portable movie watching. I'll try out the MP3 player later but so far I think Sony's got a major hit on their hands.

No way. With the just the game titles that Nintendo has under its belt, it will live on for a long time. Funny everyone said the same thing when the Gamecube came out. Last time i checked, after the rush for everyone to buy PS2's and X-boxes that Gamecube not only made a strong surge in sales, but skyrocketed.
The Gameboy has a huge advantage over the PSP in that little kids breaking a $50 Gameboy over the $200 PSP and no CD's. Oh yeah and that annoying little genre called Poke'mon and the 100's of Poke'mon yellow, blue, bluegreen and what ever color they can think of. I think this PSP, no matter how good it is will be just like the last Sony Portable. Lots of hype in the beggining and then it bogs down later. Thats not to say its not a great portable. Just the market for cheap portable is better then the high end.

Nintendo isn't done. I still prefer PS2 though but I might have to get Nintendo for the new Zelda game. It looks amazing.

Nintendo makes games for younger ages, meaning a lot of kids play there games. Adults prefer the Playstation2, Xbox because of its realism and violence.

Lemme 'splain. Actually, a PSP is $250, but also functions an MP3 player, movie player and has built in wireless. The high price of admission is justified by the capabilties of the machine. UMB's, being optical discs are a little more fragile, but they're actually encased in their own load tray (kinda like the old CD-Rom drives). The only real cause for concern is the exposed read area. Most kids I know tend to take care of their videogames, nowadays, too. They've come to understand "trade-in" at an early age.
I've got a lot more emotional investment in the big N but Sony's just arrived in a huge way. Surge or no, the GC still lags behind XBox and PS2 stateside, and will continue to fade in the next gen of consoles as Sony and MS emphasize online play while Nintendo pretends it doesn't exist. Tie in that Sony'll have far more developers behind their product and at very least all major Sony Pictures releases in UMB format and the PSP could be absolutely devastating to Nintendo in the handheld race.

Exactly. I want a PSP, but I bet they are going to be hard to find for a while.

I'm sure the PSP is great, it's not worth $250 though. The Xbox is great, but personally, I prefer the Gamecube to the PS2 because the PS2 takes forever and a day to load, and the majority of the games have better graphics and control on the Xbox. I have all three machines, but if it's out for multiple machines I have it for the Xbox. You simply can't beat games like Zelda and Mario and the Star Wars games on the Gamecube though. Playstation is good for games like Grand Theft Auto (if you're impatient) and Gran Turismo....Forza is going to blow that out of the water though. All they have left then is Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy XI right now costs $90 because it requires the hard drive. So while I don't think the PSP is worth the cost, they will sell out and become #1 simply because of fanboys that think Sony is God.....kinda like Mustangs.
well said......I have all 3 systems, I only buy games for Xbox unles I can't get it on xbox meaning GT4 and mario, zelda, metroid etc......I rarely play ps2 anymore, Nintendo has some of the great classic titles which you won't get on xbox or ps2 and that makes it worth keeping

Ok slightly off topic..
How much memory does a PSP have and how is it setup? is this something I could get some decent size storage (4GB+) on?

I think it just uses the sony memory sticks.......they should have made it SD memory cards...
Nintendo would probably make more money if they simply sold games without all the money spent on the consoles etc.

Isn't that what Sega does?
Gotta say though nothing beats the Super Nintendo years I had as a kid. Best system ever. I still have it hooked up :gr_jest:

A friend of mine got a PSP today and I have to agree that the screen is gorgeous but it is not worth $250 to me. I could only see paying that if I traveled a lot and could not fire up the old xbox. Yes watching movies is nice but who wants to go out and buy all their movies on UMD? Not to mention there is only one movie out for it so far. It would have been nice if you could hook it up to a TV to play the games but I have a feeling if they did that then their PS2 sales would drop significantly. If it was $150 id already have one but for now I'll wait till the craze is over and pick one up when they slash prices.

Colecovision with the Atari 2600 Adapter, here. And I've got Pong in the crawlspace behind the wall. As for Fanboyage, I don't even own a PS2: The death of the Dreamcast is still an open wound to me. . . But the PSP is unbelievable in a way the DS wasn't. I literally bought my PSP on a whim. I figured I'd get up, go to Best Buy at 10am (didn't know they opened early), hear they sold out and end up buying some XBox games. Low and behold, they had plenty. I brought it home and was subsequently floored. Way better than I expected it to be. I can't emphasize how awesome Wipeout Pure is. As for movies, the UMD's gonna be secondary for watching. I'll spring for a one gig SD Duo and rip anything I want to watch into MP4 down the line. The built-in MP3 player is a great feature and something that helped make it worth the $250 to me. Hell, I'm listening to "Teenage Wasteland" on it as I'm typing.
The USB port and scan disks scream one thing to me. . . Hacker's paradise. In a few months there's gonna be add-in PSP apps, whether made by Sony or not. And some clever bastard's gonna find a way to stream info out of an ECM onto this little devil. I can't wait.

Ok I went out and played with one at the local best buy, what an incredible unit!! My main focus is on MP3/File Storage and then gaming so it really wont store the kind of crazy volume I need. However I did walk out with a 60GB iPod Photo :)
