View Full Version : Concealed Carry Folks, a Question:

So, I'm finally going to take the plunge, I'm getting myself a "Christmas present" (the kind that comes in .45 with a trigger-based delivery system), and want to be able to take this Christmas gift of mine on car trips in the future. I will be taking the class early next year, so it's all good and legal. I had everything planned out until I hit a snag.
I remember that my father used to carry when we'd go on family trips in my younger days, which was fine, because we had a Suburban with a center console storage bin that you could have tossed a small child into and you wouldn't have heard 'em hit bottom. The GTO of course, has a much smaller bin. So, for you guys that don't have a small-frame concealed carry sized pistol, but instead have a full-framed one like I'm getting, where do you keep it while driving so you'll have easy access? And no, I'm not carrying it on my effing lap, that's where my dimebag goes.

can't find a good holster that will let you drive while holstered?

I never could either so that's where the under the front seat trick came from. Besides, ever try to draw a handgun from a holster while sitting down?
It sucks.

Well, to be honest, I have no real interest in actual concealed carry. If I'm not at my place of employment (a defense contractor closed facility), on campus, or at home, I don't really go anywhere where I feel I'd need to carry. So, a holster to keep a weapon on my person isn't something I've really looked into. I just want to be able to carry in my car in a way that if someone tries something, or if I get off at a wrong exit in the middle of nowhere (Orlando to Fort Myers) I won't have to be like "I hear banjos, PADDLE FASTER!"

The door pocket. Fits nice, accessible, doesn't really roll around. Plus, ask any cop and they will tell you that is the place they find most guns in cars. It's almost like it was built for that purpose.
The other spot I will use if concealment is a factor is in the seat pocket behind the passenger seat.

i have dont own a gun, but i would assume the pocket behind the passenger seat might be good. A belt holster might even clip to keep the handle out.

A question for CC guys. I'm in Ohio, a CC state and am also thinking of getting a permit. I'm guessing these permits don't carry much weight when in a state that doesn't allow it. Any experience in this area?

You won't be legal to carry concealed in states that don't honor it. At the class they should go over which states your permit is good in.

What if you traveling from a CC state to another CC state and you pass through a non-CC state and you get pulled over and the cop finds it?
Ramsey
12-09-2007, 01:25 PM
Then you are screwed. You have to abide by that states laws while you are in it. So if they want the gun in three pieces in the trunk with the ammo in the glove box, then that is what you are supposed to do. Keep in mind you have to do a lot to give the cop a reason to search your car. Just because they pull you over doesn't mean they can check any locked compartment. They are allowed to look in the car, but they can't lift anything or open anything. If they do, get a good lawyer and take them to court.

Most CC states honor other CC states permits.
Full frames fit in the center console or the side pocket or the glove box. If you put it in the side pocket or under the seat, you need your permit on you. In the center console or glove box your fine if you're 21.

1st one, not a good spot...second one, a little better. Problem with both of those is the fact that when you open your door, you might scare the shit out of some people, to include cops.

+++1 on the door pocket great spot and really fast accesibilty
get a cheap in the pants holster(which is what i carry with the most) or a leather belt loop holster.
You want your gun on you at all times, not under a seat/ in a center console/ behind the passenger seat.
Scenarios: You get in an accident, seems innocent enough, then get out of the car and *insert bad scenario that requires a firearm here* -
You get out to get gas and somebody approaches you to rob you, and that good old firearm is in your car. Or better yet they take your car complete with firearm.
You are nice and tired one night and forget about your gun because 8 million other things are on your mind and somebody steals your car, or breaks in and takes your gun.
I could go on forever. If you want the responsibility of owning a firearm and carrying it concealed, then carry the damned thing concealed on your person, not your vehicle.

If you're only really going to have it in the car, get a good seat-holster.

Touching on the point of opening the door and scaring someone. If someone even sees your gun, they can say they were scared and you will go to jail for it. It is best to keep it where no one will know you have it. Which would probably be on you.

depends again on the state. Here in Va we're allowed to open carry without permit.
I can go out with my xd on one hip and my usp on the other, in the open, if i really want. I can also drive around with it sitting on the passenger seat if i want.

If someone calls the cops, and the cops show up, and you present your CCP, the most they're likely to do is suggest you improve your concealment.
Unless the local PD are complete assclowns. :wall:

True, I forgot about you lucky bastids. I live in Texas, where the laws make absolutely no sense.
It is legal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet.
It is illegal to be drunk in a bar.
It is legal to drink in a restaurant being underage if you are with your parents.
Man I am ready to move out of this place.

In Fl you can only carry a gun without a permit as long as it is "securely encased". That means you glove box, gun boxes, trunk, or center console. It has to close securely, but does not need to be locked.
Gun in door holder = fuxxored
Gun under seat = fuxxored
Gun on passenger seat = fuxxored
Keep it in a holster in your center console, chambered and ready to roll. Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you need "3 steps" or whatever, that law never actually existed.

Well, remember, I'm going to get obtain my CCL, specifically so I'll have the choice, as it were. And I thought it was that you had to have the gun unloaded in the trunk if you didn't have a permit here in FL?

For you, perhaps. I have shot the XD in all three caliburs, and the gun didn't feel nearly as good to me, nor was I as accurate. I WAS going to get one. Then I shot the M&P and to me, it's the better gun.

Nope, you can leave it condition 1 in any secure location (out of site in a 4 walled container) anywhere in your car in FL. It is after all, the Gunshine state.
I actually remove the seats out of my cars and install a holster directly under the seat cushion, which has worked pretty well thus far, IMHO.

I have a similar case that I have carried a full size .45 and my Hi-Power. Keeps it concealed, opens quickly, and can sit on the passenger seat in full view without raising a snoopy LEO's eyebrows.

Oh trust me, brother. Guns are like...well, women, cars, and anything else worth having. An informed choice is absolutely necessary in cases like that!
In retrospect, I only got to try the M&P because the range's shop was absolutely out of XD's. Some guy had come and bought the damn rental, that very morning as they didn't have any (and can't keep 'em) in stock. I did really like the XD in 9mm the most out of the three. But yeah, when I went in, the guy was like "You really like the XD? Well, S&M has a new unit out, called the M&P, check it out. If you liked the XD you'll love this one."
It has these swappable handgrips that really make the difference, I think. That's probably what makes it better for me than the XD. They're both fantastic shots otherwise.

Sig 229 in 40 S&W. 12 rd mag with one in the hole. Sitting in the map pocked upside down.
First round is a solid, next 12 are hollow points, recomended by a FL State Narc. Not really sure if it will help, but I can see the logic if the window is up.
Sitting upside down, becasue it fit better that way and with only 1 inch of handle showing, black against black. With the door open you can hardly see it. However when I stop usually the gun comes in with me. However at work it can't
There is a website that will show you the reciprocity agreements with all the different states. Also taking your questions to the class will be a big help. I got to do a 2 day class with LEO's and a lawyer teaching the class. Really helps to know your legal rights at the end of the day.
