View Full Version : Anyone widen their OEM wheels?

This is related to the other thread I started, but didn't want things to get too confusing! I was thinking about having a stock 17" widened 1" to the inside to run 275s out back. Not too expensive since I already have the wheels. Anyone try this route? How do you like it?

A few have. Some have had to run a bolt on type spacer for proper offsets to clear the inner fender.

I've been running a set of widened stockers for over a year now (bought from another member).
1" will be too wide (99% sure). Mine were only widened 3/4" and I had to pound in the inner fender well to fit 275 falken 451's (and these typically run narrow). If you go 1" you will need a spacer, and at that point, you might as well just do the math and figure out the perfect offset to make a 17x10" fit with a 1-1.5" spacer.
10" wide will fit....we know that now with the Drift R's :)

Thanks for the info folks - man, getting enough rubber under the back of this car is a major PITA! :banghead: It just shouldn't be this hard IMHO. Someone could make a fortune making a decent conversion kit from the GTO setup to something more common like a Corvette wheel.

You could always scrimp and put the 275's on your stockers. I'm runnin' them (Nitto 555). I know alot of people say its too much meat for the rim but I never auto-x corner or anytrhing like that. Only straight line racing. My fenders aren't rolled either. (verry lilttle rub on drivers side due to bad cradle alignment.)

Ya know what, lots of auto-crossing RX8's put 285's on the stock 18x8 wheels without any real problems so 275 isnt bad at all.
Plenty of gto owners with 275's on an 8" wide wheel and I havent heard a problem yet!

Yeah, I've been tempted on that wide-tire-on-narrow-wheel thing...I could see doing a 255 or maybe even a 265....grr....
I'm having trouble picturing an autocross setup with 275s on an 8" wide wheel...do they get away with that because they run silly high tire pressures?:dunno:

I had the stock 17s widened to 9 inches.I did not roll the outer fenders.I did have to roll the inner fenders forward of the shocks and grind the lower suspension arm about a quarter of an inch.I use my car for drag racing and use drag bags,I'm not sure if there would be any rubbing on a stock or lowered car used for road racing.

A wider tire is definetly better however because of our skinny tires better rubber will make a big difference. Don't skimp when it comes to buying tires, yeah your new wheels look cool, but our tires are only thing touching the road. Good tires will help braking and fuel economy as well, not just handling and grip.
May the goats be with you.

No spacers needed with my 17x9s with M/T 275 DRs.Anything wider would require a spacer and rolling of the fenders.
