Looking for light weight wheels that won't break the bank.

This will be mainly for the dragstrip with skinnies on front and 275 M/T drag radials in the rear. Looking at staying with 17" and hopefully a little wider than stock.

The Kosei K1 Racing wheel is 17X8.5 with 40mm offset at only 16.8 lbs. Anyone running this wheel?

Is that enough offset to run M/T 275? I have Pedders +5/16" drag springs and currently have a pair of Nitto 275 on stock 17X8 wheels. No rubbing, but I can't remember the stock offset.

The last piece of the puzzle would be skinny front tires to match the Mickeys. Might even go with Kosei K1 16X7 in the front since they are lighter and cheaper than the 17 inchers. Skinnies might fit better too, if I can find some decent 16" tires.

Yeah, thanks... but I already searched. As you saw, not many threads turned up by the search for Kosei K1 Racing wheels. Actually, I originally heard about the Kosei K1 by searching the forum for light weight wheels.

Gotcha. Stock offset is +48.

Thanks bro. So, stock wheel is 17X8 with +48mm offset. The Kosei K1 is 17X8.5 with +40mm offset. So sounds like the wheel might be ok with M/T 275 drag radials. I don't mind a little fender lip grinding as long as there is no rubbing on the inside.

Go to http://www.bigcustomwheels.com/rt_specs.jsp to play around with tire sizes and offsets.

You can get the following tires in 205/55r16 which is a 25" tall tire:

BFG G-Force Sport $92 each

Kumho Ecsta SPT $83 each

And a bunch of other types

Using a 275/40r17 on a 17x8.5 40mm offset:

Suspension: Package is 7 mm (0.3'') closer to suspension/brakes components. Acceptable for most cars.

Fenders: Package will stick out 23 mm (0.9'') farther. Make sure that you have enough room under the fender. If not, consider narrower tires or higher offset.

Edit: I ran a 17x9 wheel with a 40 offset and a 275/40r17 with my fenders cut. I have the same springs as you. I never rubbed after cutting.

Jon, that's an excellent interactive wheel chart, very helpful. Thanks for sharing. Inside clearance is no problem. However, looks like the tire will stick out about 8mm more than my Nitto on stock wheels. I'm guessing that will definitely require fender lip grinding. Do you remember how much you had to grind off yours?

I also just remembered I have a pair of Goodyear Eagle 225 16" tires with about 60% tread left gathering dust out in the shed (don't remember if they are 50 or 60 series though). Those might be ok for front tires if I get the 16X7 front wheels.

Grinded off about half of the the lip. I also have drag bags I inflate to 16 psi at the track. They were a beeeeaaaatch to get into the Pedders springs.

My friend runs 17x8 ones on his WRX for his summer tires and autocross. Very light, but they are soft. He's bent a few of them on potholes running around town. They should be fine for the dragstrip, but be careful on the drive there!
