Not my car, but i'm thinking to do this.
Looking at some General UHP tires threads yesterday, i found this fella who's using the General 235/45/17's in the front and 275/40/17's in the rear. as you guys would see, the tire buldge looks similar to those of us who are using Nitto 275 Dr's, so it's not bad as i thought.
I was planning to get 255's for the back, but i'd more likely end up running the 275's. i'm aware that no manufacturer supports a 275/45 tire in a 8" wheel, but all of them do if the tire if 245/70 for example. i'm currenlty running 245/70 tires on a 7" wheel in my winter beater, and it's perfectly supported by tires manufactuer, i have no intentions to build a road racing car, and the tire is not as wide as most 275's out there, so i don't see why not i wouldn't run this tires. i DD the nittos already, and i've been doing so for almost 6 months with zero issues. to my surprise, the rear tires seems to be wearing even.
here are the pics for the ones like me looking at something similar. be awared that not all 275 tires would fit. some run narrower, some run wider. since i'll be getting the Generals, i though it might be a good idea for everybody to see how wide they look in a 8" stock 17" wheels.

Your gunna have to cut or roll your fenders yes, but its worth it. Mine are cut, but ive seen it done both ways.

what do you think about the general performance?

Depends on tire...different manufacturers spec them different widths. I attempted to mount a 285 to my stock 18x8...helps having one less inch in OD for your 17s. I recomend you have the tire shop test fit them on (at least) the rears to see if the bulge is excessive. I ended up sending the 285s back and running 255s instead, which still push the envelope a bit on my 18s.
In a straight line you will be fine with most 275s (note - Kumhos and Goodyears tend to run wide), but you will typicaly sacrifice lateral stablity for cornering and general comfort when you run wider than a 245.
Short story long - try it an see! I would give my left one to have 275s on my Goat, but I am too cheap to upgrade the wheels! -mcs

I didn't buy the Generals cause they are in backorder at Tirerack (the 235/45/17 i wanted for the front). I ended up getting the BFG Gforce Super Sport A/S, 235/45/17 front and 275/40/17 rear. i'll try to get some pics on sunday. i like the look, perhaps a little wider than the Nitto 275 DR's i have, i'll measure the rears to find out if they are as wide as the Nittos or not. so far no rubbing at all, but i do have drag bags. i'll set them at 5 psi and go for a test drive to make sure they won't rub.

especially for the rears there is no cut and dried result with tires. the side to side variance of the rear cradle can be quite a bit. i've seen 1/2" difference from one side to another so what works on one car may not work on another. the amount of spring sag can affect it too. i ran Nitto 275s on the back with no problem on my stock 17s. i got the back two wheels widened an inch to make it better tho. i also rolled my fenders
That looks like a 245 width tire.

they're noticeable wider, but i'm not good with camera angles and what not to show it ..., don't get this tires in 275's if you think because of the pics they would fit like a 245, like i said, they look to be a tad wider than the Nitto 275 DR's.
I couldn't measure them today because the temps were in the 24's outside, but i'll do it next week. i'll take the wheel out and compared one of this BFG tires to the Nitto 275's both on same stock 17" wheel, side by side. i'll have pics and measurements.

Unfortunely the weather is still not very good to be outside playing with the car, but i took the air out of the drag bags to 0 PSI on Friday and tested for rubbing issues this way. i had a 130 miles round trip to the office, highway driving, with all the big SW Michigan potholes and everything, plus some hard launches today, and i didn't have any rubbing issues whatsoever.
i have no rubbing issues with Nitto 275 DR's, and no rubbing issues with this BFG Gforce Super Sport A/S 275 tires at all, even with the drag bags set at 0 PSI. (5 PSI Normally)

Did you get the tires online? If so where did you get them?
Did you end up with 235/45/17's in the front and 275/40/17's in the rear?
I lowered my o4 in the front this weekend......I have the rear springs, but not sure if I am going to lower the rear. I was looking at new wheels and tires, but I think I am going to power coat the stock 17's and try your sizing with Nitto's.

i bought them from tireack, 560$ shipped to my door, + $94 to mount/rebalance all 4 of them at Tireman.
Fronts are 235/45/17, and the rears are 275/40/17.

Any updates on measurements and pictures? I am curious to see how wide the BFG's are compared to the Nittos as well.
Thanks!!

my bfg's rub... let my drag bags go for a little while without checking the air pressure, and they started rubbing. when they're inflated ot about 20 lbs they are ok.
ack. looks like i'm going to have to get the fenders rolled and a spare set of BFG's in case these get ruined. gonna watch them close from now own.

I have my 04 lowered 1.2" with 275/40/17's......I cut most of the lip off my self with lots of tape, a grinder and sawzall....Then re-painted the inside of the lip. No rubbing with just me in the car, but I have issues with passengers and the trunk loaded.
