View Full Version : A couple of wheel and tire ?'s

I will start off by saying I did try searching and really haven't found what I'm looking for.
Question 1-
I have noticed, with our cars, that the typical staggared setup makes the rear wheel/tire look smaller in diameter. I was wondering if using the same series tire in the back would help. Example: front 245/35-18 (insead of 245/40-18) and rear 275/35-18 would help it the rear look the same size in diameter. I guess the other way would be to have a 19" wheel in the rear and 18" upfront but then the rear tire would have to be a lower profile.
Question 2-
I can't decide on a wheel Thruxton, Drift-r or CSL replicas. I was looking at the Drift-R's on Group A and I noticed that they have packages for 10" rear with 275 and 9" rear with 275. I was wondering which would be best? Would the 10" be overly stretched and/or the 9" bulge? I know if I went with the thruxtons I could get the 9.5" which seems ideal for a 275 series tire.

The second number in the tires sizes is the ratio of sidewall height to width. In your example, the sidewall height of the 245/35 is 35% of 245mm and 40% of 245mm. The rear would be 35% of 275mm.
Among your choices, Drift Rs have the best offsets so getting a 10" wide wheel is no problem. I have 19x10s out back with 285/30 tires and only had to roll my fenders. My tires run narrow so I went with 285s vice 275s.
Hope that helps.

^^^ What size front tires are you running?
I wanna keep the front tire side wall near the rear size.
If your running 285/30 = 85.5 sidewall then should your front be 245/35 = 85.75?
Are the narrow running tires your refering to the T1R's? I have heard about alot of people having issues with rubbing with 275's so that's awesome you got 285's to fit with no rubbing.
Thanks for the input...

I've got 245/35s up front on 8" wide wheels. Tires are T1Rs.

Here is another question.
I was looking on discount tire and they have the Thruxtons but they don't have the T1R's. Anyone have any experience with the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 fitting at 275/35-18?
I am looking at all my options for what will be most convienent and work the best. I have heard great things about the KDW T/As but I don't know if it will fit. I should have Pedders 0" drop in the rear and fenders rolled if I pull the trigger on these.

BFGs run very wide so I'm not sure how well they'll fit on Thruxtons. You may have to tone it down to a 265 or maybe 255. I'm sure someone else more knowledgeable with BFGs will chime in.

I have done some searching on the KDW's and it seems that some people are rocking the 275s but the consensus seems to be that they do run wider. If I go with the 265's should I stay at 35? I am probably over thinking this whole thing but I wanna get it right the first time. I would hate to get the street II 0" drop and then roll the fenders just to have the $220+ a piece tires not fit.
Thanks for your help cisco!

I haven't bought the BFGs yet, but that's what I am buying. after all the looking around I have done on the manufacturers sites, the BFG is within a tenth or two of an inch, in diameter and section width, as the Toyos and most of the other top brands. I didn't bother with stuff like Falkens and Summitio (or whatever those things are called) because they are just a discount tire and I would never put stuff like that on my car
the difference only seems to be that the BFG is a tire with a stronger and more square sidewall, just meaning it doesn't round off like so many other brands out there so you get a little forgiveness on you fitment
again, I say this only from reading the manufacturers actual specs, not from any firsthand experience

Saw this in another thread (talking about 18" Thruxtons):
Offset is an 8" 40 on the front, 9.5" 45 rear. They're BFG wide. I had lots of problems getting them to fit. I had to grind 3 different times, at most the lip I have left is only an 1/8" wide.

I saw VQ had a sale on them and they do a +3 on the wheel to get the offset to +48. That might be the extra space I'm looking for it I make sure the suspension isn't sagging and I roll the lips. We'll see when I get a reply on my PM.
Thanks for the help.

I just installed TSW 18x9.5 in the rear with BFG KDW2s 265/35s. They hit the top of the wheel well. I was wondering if installing new stiffer coils and shocks would fix the problem rather then rolling the fender?

Are your stock springs sagging that bad? I would think you need some new coils out back if you are suffering from severe spring sag. Is there any rubbing on the lip of the wheel well?

When i put the wheels on it looks like i have plenty of clearance but when i drive it, the tires hit the lip of the fender. There was rubbing on the inside of the wheel well but i cut out where it was hitting. Would you recommend rolling the fender.

^^^I don't know man. I have seen some guys on here cutting and some rolling trade off for both it seems. I am going to go with a Street II suspension setup with 0" drop rear then roll my fenders. After I get that done I'm gonna get the wheels and tires. I'm going to do suspension for more reasons than tires but I'm hoping the 0" drop will help.

Rear springs on these cars is bad. I ran some ofthe first Drift-Rs with 275/35/18s. I used 245/40/18s in front. I would rub in the rear on almost any bump in the road. And that's with no people other than myself in the car. I installed King sprins in the rear. It now only rubs when I compress the suspension a good amount. Like going a little too fast then a dip in the road. But for daily use, no rub. If it wasn't for that occasional rub when hitting a dip, I'd be running 295s in the rear. From all that I've read, the Pedders 0" springs accomplish the same goal as my King springs. Since the stock springs sag, the new springs will have a higher spring rate & appear to lift the car slightly. It looks good on my car. :D

Oh and springs will help... I changed mine out around 10K miles. Noticed it when i was looking down the side of the of the car that the tires were not sitting close to flat on the ground (not to mention the lack of gap between the tire and the lip). ITs easy to change yourself.

I just ordered the Pedders 5/16" raise drag springs to eliminate the little rubbing I had.

I was hoping I could find out a price on the Thruxton package with the +3 offset for the back. How much would +3 help the rub issue? I wonder where else I could get this +3 done if I never get a reply?

Are you talking about wheels with +3mm offset or raising the rear of the car 3"? The +3mm wheels are going to stick out from under the car BIG TIME. :yikes: That's the offset that would be seen on F-bodies up to 1993 or 2wd S10s. Our range of wheels is usually between +35mm & +50mm.

I think he's talking about milling the Thruxtons 3mm to make the offset 48mm as opposed to 45.

I'm refering to the vendon mentioned earlier who will machine another +3. The Thruxtons run a +45 on the rear wheels and with another +3 machined would be +48 offset. I would really like to fit 275 KDW NTs out back but I have concerns about them fitting.
