View Full Version : can you run the weld skinnies with OEM studs

temporarily?? I have swapped out my old rear studs for the ARP ones listed in the Weld thread and swapped out my rears for 275/50/15 hoosier DOT's. I however have BFG radial T/A 180's on 3.5" weld skinnies and may need to run them on the stock studs. I know the bolt pattern isn't exact and this is something I plan on doing only once before swapping them out for the ARP studs I have in the garage.
Any objections in the short term or do I need the longer studs because of how narrow the wheel is to prevent rubbing?

you can but I wouldn't for long.. the lug pattern is off a little and would make it very hard to bolt on...

Now correct me if I am wrong but the lug pattern is going to be "wrong" no matter what studs you put on but rather the ARP are just much stronger studs and will last longer. That really is the only difference except the replacement ARP studs are longer.
I do have the mcguard lug nuts though. Can I use them on the stock studs?

sorry for the hijack but can we also run the longer studs with stock wheels. i don't really want to be switching studs for my welds and for my stock wheels.

From what I understand you can, however the studs will stick out further than the OEM ones, meaning you probably won't be able to use your lug nut covers. So basically you will be driving around with the studs coming out of your wheels.

GTO bolt pattern is 120mm. Weld Draglites, (and others),have 4.75" bolt pattern.
4.75" converted to mm is 120.65mm. The 0.65 mm difference is half the thickness of a dime (1.30mm).
For our purposes, 4.75" wheels are basically a direct fit.

Thank you. I wish people would get over this. Production tolerances are larger than the difference in the two bolt patterns.

Exactly. Any 4.75" that has proper backspace and clearance works fine. A great example is the 16x8" Camaro wheels. I run them for track rears with drag radials.

I ran my Draglites, stock wheels, and a set of old Camaro wheels on the longer ARP studs no problem. Also, don't fear the installation on the ARP studs, you don't have to take everything apart like some say. I did all 4 wheels on my 05 in about 2 hours.

15x3.5 Draglites and McGard lugnuts will bolt right up.
I just did this for the first time last month.
Took the wheels, lug nuts and washers off my Buick and ran them at my last track outting. Huge difference in front end weight reduction. I'd say about 80#s worth. Word to the wise tho, if your skinnies have stick on weights on the back, they could rub the caliper. Make sure to check for rubbing. Stock front studs as well.
Other than that, they work great.

NHRA tech rules say that the stud must stick out past the wheel as far as it is thick. Just because you have a long shank lug nut, that does not make you legal. The tech guy just hasn't caught you. If you have a thick center weld drags lights your stock studs are not legal. Personally the fronts should be ok safety wise but not the rears. The open end lug nuts are so the tech guy can peek in to see if your studs are long enough. If you have a closed end lug nut don't be surprised if the tech guy makes you take one off to see the length of the stud. Take your stock set up with you in case you don't pass tech. Not all techs catch everything.

you can use the caps with long arp studs. I do have a piece of double stick tape inside just to make sure that they stay put.

I've ran skinnies up front on stock studs but track won't like that

Well crap... looks like another thing I'll have to add to the winter "To do" list. I just picked up a set of Weld Draglite 90 series skinnies to match my rears. I tried test fitting them yesterday and had one hell of a time. I guess all the studs will be getting replaced...

i had all the studs break clean off going about 60mph and have my right front tire fly off and messed up my fender

Happened to me as well with the stock studs and my Bogarts. Definately not worth the risk. Luckily my fender was the only thing damaged and their was no traffic around me at the time.

that must be a gto thing cuz all i did was F my fender up i mean my rotor was still fine after it drop to the ground at 60 mph. i was pissed but i was lucky the tire did not fling up and hit the door.

Holy old thread revived...
Just FYI...changing the studs in this car is about as easy as taking a piss.
I changed them all to the appropriate ARP studs and have never looked back.

Im going to dig this thread back up.
Right now, Im running stock wheels and slicks, with stock studs. At some point this summer, I plan to sell that wheel setup, and purchase a set of track wheels, and ARP studs.
We have a track rental this weekend, and a friend of mine has offered to let me run his ProStars up front on my car. I still have stock wheel studs. I know this setup wont pass tech inspection at most tracks, but my track doesnt have any sort of tech inspection, so passing inspection will not be issue. Ive heard of people shearing wheel studs off, but thats always been on rears.
I am only concerned from a safety standpoint. The tires will be changed at the track, and Ill check torque after every pass.
