OK, so there is a person with an '04 local to me that runs 255/40-17 BFG KDW-2s on stock 17's with no rubbing. The section width, according to tirerack.com, is 10.2". I am told that the lower aspect ratio of the tire eliminates the strut rub issues.

The tires I am looking at have a section width of 10.3".

Does anyone know if I will run into rubbing issues with the extra 2.5mm width?

I guess I should have mentioned that I am talking about running them up front.

It depends on how much clearance you have now from your front struts. The 17 seem to clear better than the 18 for some reason. Verify you have the room before ordering and wastin your money.

I am running the stock size now. I am hoping someone else running 255/40-17s up front can tell me what tires they are running, and how much clearance they have from the strut.

You can run the 255-40-17 up front without a problem, even with the stock wheels. It is close, and car to car you need to be a little mindful that with the wider tire you might need to run a 3mm on the front. Most likely you will just bolt them on.

How exactly does a 255/40/17 fit on the stock 17's? Little bulge?

Yes, it will bulge a little.

Also will be 1/2 " shorter overall. 25" compared to stock 25.7". More bulge in the sidewall= better rim protection!

and more bulge means worse handling. if you know how to park your car correctly, why do you need better rim protection? performance should be more important than anything else. ok, saftey should be first, but in that case, more bulge also means less safe of a tire

BTW...when they spec out the heights of those tires, they spec them out on an 8.5" rim, not a stock 8"

Well, coming from an Evo to the GTO...the car handles like shit anyway.

Lots of Evo people run 255s on the 17x8 stock rim on road coarses and have zero problems. If it works on the track, I'm sure I'll be fine daily driving my GTO.

I am doing it for looks mostly anyway...just want a shorter sidewall
