OK, Aussie mates. How do you pronounce it? Is it "muh-nair-rho"? Or is it "mo-nahr-ro"? I mean, I don't want to sound like a pommie, do I? :gr_devil:

'Mon', as in how a West indian would pronounce 'Man' ('hey mon'), or as in the start of 'Monday'
'Are' as in 'how are you' or the letter 'R'
'Oh' as in 'D'oh!'

And aussies prononce camaro "cam-ar-row" in similar sence.

MO-NAR-ROW is pretty right as Kiwi Jack wrote. Monaro is an aboriginal word for flat plane or plateau; and is also Monaro NSW. Torana is aboriginal "to fly", Maloo is aboriginal for "thunder"

Correctamondo.

I have always favoured the theory that Monaro was the Aboriginal word for a female breast. Wrong, but much more interesting.

The Monaro Plains in NSW translate as the Plain Plains :judge:

I've heard both used, so it kind of depends exactly where you're from.

The Monaro name was taken directly from the Monaro region of NSW. The story is that an engineer working on the program in the 1960s was passing though the town of Cooma and saw a sign for the Monaro County Council, and liked the sound of the name. GM even filmed the original 1960s commercial near there in the Snowy Mountains, which are about a 30 min drive to the west. Australia's highest mountain (all 7,000 ft of it), Mount Kosciuszko, is in the "Snowies" and the commercial was filmed near by.

Interestingly enough, locals in the region pronounce it "Mon-air-ro"

Well then, we were practically neighbours. I grew up in small Snowy Mountains Hydro townships in the area.

Yep, serious. Mostly at Khancoban, on the Western side of the Great Dividing range, which is home to the M1 and M2 power stations, Geehi resevoir and......well, not much else.

Funny, I was thinking this as I was scrolling down the posts, and about the whole pot-ae-to, pot-ah-to song.

Good tune writing!
