I didn't wade through all the posts under the headline thing, but the general concensus seems to be, um, disagreement with ACLU's position, to put it politely.

Out of almost 1000 comments, I only read 3 that were not against the ACLU's idiotic position.

A “collective” is a group of individuals. How can a collective have a right that the individuals in that collective don’t have? Which of the members of the group gets to exercise that right on behalf of the others? Who decides who that person is?

What about the First Amendment? It talks about freedom of the press, and “the right of the people peaceably to assemble.” That’s the same “the people” as in the Second Amendment, which you’ve asserted is a “collective right.” Maybe we should limit freedom of speech to registered press members (who will, of course, be required to store their typewriters in a disassembled and locked state, so that they are not able to exercise that collective right at a moment’s notice). We’ll take their fingerprints, run a background check, and make them demonstrate competency at composing headlines. Of course, no press will be allowed to operate within Washington D.C. — to keep illegal typewriters off the streets.

After all, all constitutional freedoms have limits. The government needs to have the power to regulate especially dangerous free speech and typewriters that are capable of performing automatic carriage returns (”assault typewriters”).

Pretty much. I bet most of those people don't really contribute, anyway.

Amazing how the ACLU can commit to other amendments being individual rights but one being a collective right.
They better pick a stand and stick with it.

I suspect their stand was based on economics.
If they had stuck with the individual right interperatation they would have had to spend a bunch of money bringing to court battles to back that up and risk losing funding from their ultra-liberal financial base.

Saw a line that fits this thread perfectly

How does the ACLU count to 10?
1,......3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

Wow, 2nd amendment only counts collectively? What a crock of shit.

They'll defend an individual's right to wear baggy pants but not an individual's right to own a firearm.

I particularly like this statement
"I think the police chief is abusing his power and violating a person's First and Fourth Amendment rights," said Gregory Gibbs, ACLU of Michigan Flint Branch president and cooperating attorney.

Nice to see they hand-pick the amendments they think are worth defending for individuals.

Its not about being robbed at gunpoint. Its about being consistent, are they the champion of the people or not? I respect them for taking unpopular stances when its for the good of freedom. But in this case it just doesn't make any sense. I mean the 2nd amendment is not only one of the most clear, and also supported by SCOTUS!

I hate this concept of picking and choosing which rights to believe in. We should believe in Freedom.

The ACLU takes whatever stances their supporters will give them money to take. Sadly, their largest supporters are charitably leftists, and uncharitably a bunch of socialist smurfwads.
