View Full Version : Is this tire damage dangerous?

The other day I hit a curb at about 10 mph, just coasting, but it wasn't pretty, got my rear driver's side wheel damaged and a piece of the tire is coming off. I took it to a tire place and they said that it wasn't too bad, didn't get to the "threads?" or something like that. This is how it looks:

That wasn't enough, I was driving in the expressway at 65-70'ish and there was a brick (one of them red bricks) actually standing, not flat, in the middle of the road, I had cars on either side of the goat, so I could not avoid it, I tried to avoid it as much as I could but it hit the front driver's side tire. That impact kinda flattened the wheel a little and cause a small bulge on the side of the tire. Took iot back to the same place and the guy told me that anytime you get a bulge, is dangerous and it should be replaced ASAP. I've driven it about 300 miles, the tire has that little bulge but is hard, not one of them bulges that are thinned out. Should I change that tire, it hurts me cause it's like 6 months old.

Oh, and is the flattening of the wheel terminal? or can that be fixed?

The first tire is fine. The second tire could come apart on the highway and you could die! But in all seriousness, the bulging tire is in bad shape, you should replace it immediately. If you want, you could replace both and have some nice burnout fun beforehand so it doesn't feel like you wasted them :dunno:

judging by your recent luck, i'd go ahead and replace the both of them. it would put me at ease anyways.

Darn, that's sad, I could've filled the tank almost 3 times with all that money for a tire.

Either-or, you now have two weak spots to think about.

The tire that has a piece missing, looks like it isn't in too bad of shape. But another bump, curb, BRICK, etc. at a decent speed can flex the tire and cause it to leak in that specific area ...or in the worst case scenario, blow out.

The tire that has a bulge must be replaced soon! A belt has broken inside and weakened it. Personally, I'd put a spare on that part of the car and drive the wheel to a shop for replacement.

holy :shiner: ...

I'd replace the one that took a brick to the face... sorry about your bad luck... I'd assume rub the car next to me than to run over that, ouch...

First tire is fine, the second no way.

Dude I just had to replace two of mine, one b/c it blew, the other b/c after I had the blow out, I hit a curb so the other one ended up w/ a nice bulge like yours has there. I'd change it as soon as you can.

Don't do any high speed runs unless you replace them with other tires. On a side note i doubt you will have any problems, but as others have said luck may not be on your side. My friend drove on his tires until the threads were the surface. His car would screech across an intersection at totally normal speed as the tires had zero traction at that level of wear. My other friend and I went off on him about replacing the tire and how dangerous it was. He actually listened and replaced them the next day. Its one thing to gamble with your own life, but he was driving us around that day.

I hear you guys, I often carry my family around, it just seemed that the bulge was pretty solid, like bent out of shape rather than weakened. I'm looking at some Bridgestones for 160 bucs, I'm gonna check out the Goodyears tomorrow, and I seen a few that I had no clue what they are, like Falcons or some other brand names. Thanks for your info. This is what I like about this forum, you post something and in less than a couple hours you get tons of answers. :)

I also wouldn't trust the tire on high speeds. Discount tires will not bother patching holes that are on the sidewall. They have that policy for a reason.

i agree, any damage on the sidewall is not good, i would replace both just to be safe. a blowout will cause more damage than buying 2 new tires.

I would have to agree that the second tire is smoked...replace ASAP.
The first time I would've said the same except for my personal experiece with that same thing...
I bought my car with 35 miles on it and drove it 250 miles home. The very next day I was giving her her first "sponge bath" (hehe) and noticed the same curb rub trace. The tire was cut same as yours and the wheel slightly scarred. I tried to have the dlr warranty it, but they told me (understandably) that I "couldn't prove it was there b4 I drove off the lot - I should have pointed it out there." I changed its position from LF to LR because I'de rather have a blow out in back. I have kept an eye on it and have another set for the track, but it has been fine (even on those quick "bust a Stang's ass" run through 4th!).
If you can swing the dough, I'de replace it for the piece of mind, but mine has now lasted 17 months and 29,800 miles!
Good luck,
Troy

Ditto that.

If you can see any of the cord material at all in the first tire, it's junk, if you can't see any cord, then it should be ok.

the 2nd tire is junk, and dangerous.

Couple mechanics have told me is much better to blow the front tire, cause you can control it better, they were referring to my wife's mazda MPV, not sure about sports cars.

ROAD HAZARD WARRANTY!
Uhmmmm, I'll look into it.

If you can see any of the cord material at all in the first tire, it's junk,

Nop, no chord material at all.

the 2nd tire is junk, and dangerous.

Yup, It'll be gone tomorrow :)

:)

Hmmm, interesting. I have always been told that it is more controllable to lose a rear tire vs a front. I had a catastrauphic blowout to a RR on a Taurus at 85 mph and it was a non event. I have friends that had blow outs at freeway speeds to fronts and have no more car!
Good luck anywho!

Speed rated tires should not be used with ANY defects. Just replace em, if there are ANY questions about em. Your life and the well being of others are not worth anything less....

I would replace both, not worth the risk IMO.

And also, I would much wrather have a blowout on the back, than the front.

Both tires are shot...
Ideally you should have the same brand tire at all 4 corners for safety and performance.
