I based my purchase of PS2 over Xbox on the games that PS2 has, they are better and come out earlier...yes Xbox has, and probably will have, better graphics but unless they can back it up with the titles and releases, I don't care about them.

I beat Halo with my brother (thought that was cool that you could beat it with muliple players playing at once) but then stopped playing for like a couple months. Played it again and thought it was such a lame game. I haven't always been a fan of futuristic type games though. Heck, i'm still playing CS after 3-4 years!

Final Fantasy will be coming to the Xbox and PS3.

The consoles are going to be so close to each other technically that it is all going to come down to who's AD's you enjoy more.

Launching the 360 early was a good move, plus it will be backwards compatible and have a huge edge over nintendo and PS3 in the Online department with XBL.

I thought I read that the Xbox360 can do 1 TFLOP of operations per second and the PS3 can do something like 2.5 TFLOP of operations per second. That doesn't even seem remotely close to each other. I was much more impressed with the graphics for the PS3 than I was for the Xbox360. Right now I have a Xbox and wouldn't consider getting a PS2. I'm going to have to wait for PS3 to launch before I decide which system to get now though. I don't really like the look of either system and both look like they will be a PITA to put into the rack in my home theater. :banghead: Looks like I might have to replace my projector when I get one of the new systems.

I don't really care about the whole online thing for games. Multiplayer is the only thing I'm interested in. The whole micro transaction things microsoft is pushing is pointless to me.

All I need in a new gaming console is wireless controllers, tons of power, and a hard drive. If the Xbox360 wasn't backwards compatible I would have been disappointed. I didn't want to have 2 consoles in my rack just for xbox. I wonder how long it will take them to work out modchips for the new xbox and playstation :gr_jest: . I like the idea of the PS3 using blu-ray, but are they honestly going to make games that are 50GB. It really isn't a concern for me if blu-ray does flop for the next dvd standard. The Playstation wouldn't be a DVD player for me anyway. I think it could be mistake for the next xbox to use DVD-9, but at the same time there are too many formats up in the air right now to commit to a single one. If I had to order either a PS3 or Xbox360 right now I think I would go with the PS3. Both systems look ugly, both have fugly controlers, but the PS3 seems to have better graphics. I read that the PS3 will support 1080p! If that's the case I REALLY do need a new projector for sure. Games in 1080p would be simply amazing. A lot of the info I read could be wrong. We will just have to wait until they both launch and see who really is top dog this time around.

Future proof my friend!

I just watched the entire 2 hour E3 thing in streaming video and I couldnt blink it was so good.... (Seriously, I didnt even want to pause it just to go to the bathroom.)

The PS3 has more than 2x the power of the Xbox360. It does over 2 Tflops which is 1/5th of a super computer array Sony uses to render CG for movies. It has something like 32.5gb/s memory bandwidth which is off the hook! (They said the memory bandwidth could move 7 DVD's in one second!) It uses 256mb of system memory and another 256mb of texture memory HOWEVER both can be shared by the GPU/Cell processor. The GPU is greater than 2x the power of Nvidias current BEST graphics card on the market combine. (with over 300 Million transistors) It is capable of displaying real time game play on TWO 1080p diplays at the same time for a superwidescreen 32:9 aspect ratio (in the event you are super rich and have two 1080p capable widescreens to game on). I forget how they compare their Cell processor to current technology and the processor in the Xbox360 but basicly it will smoke the doors right off the Xbox for sure.

As I see it, the PS3 will have far more overall capability than the Xbox360. As for games, the demos shown were AMAZING! Forget Halo, i'm talking so realistic you could see moisture dripping down a persons skin and the persons face distort from a blow in the next EA Fight Night game for the PS3 on top of nearly photo realistic models and physics in real time. This system is so powerfull that their is no need for pre-rendered 'cut scenes' like games of old. These systems can render so realistic it looks like pre-rendered CG. Their Unreal 3 engine demo was uber sweet.... I cant even imagine playing a game that realistic! On top of that, it has support for up to 7 wireless controllers via Bluetooth and it has wi-fi built in along with gigabyte ethernet among other things.

And my favorite part... backwards compatable all the way to PS1!

I like the PlayStation. XBox has decent games but the whole Live thing pisses me off, screw subscribing AND paying for freaking broadband. Though I think Sony is going that way too, so I guess I'll just have to look at other people when I want to play multiplayer. Oh, and I also think that anyone who doesn't know what a "teraflop" or even a "flop" is should not be using it. MIPS is the devil.

All I'm thinking is that its a great time to be a gamer. It's awesome seeing console specs like these. I currently have 2 GeForce 6800 ultras running SLI and its really what I'd consider the entry baseline (in performance) for running HD 3D games. Games like half life 2 look stunning, but games like EQ2 can choke them still when you start turning on the detail and big textures. So both systems will have issues w/ big textures and you will see those dumbed down on the consoles. I have tried the box hooked up to my HD TV, running 1080i PC games on HD looks great. The UI's and text stuff needs to be addressed and I'm sure it would be on console games written for that application. You also see bad flicker on window borders. None of the games are really playable in 1080i, I'd reccommend 720p for gaming on even an SLI system.

What I am especially interested in is how the console community is going to address the dreaded "Overscan" issues for HDTV. There isn't a video card/driver available today that will correctly size the video to the TV automagically. It's still a tweaking art. It's the TV's issues as there aren't any requirements for TV's to communicate scan tables to the devices (like a monitor would on a PC). This results in start bars that are off the screen and up to 10% of the video being unviewable around borders. It's the single most frustrating issue w/ media centers. I imagine any video thats critical to see (like menu's) would have to be centered so that they wouldn't be within 20-30 pixels of any border. Not really the best solution, but the only thing they can really do... hopefully I'm proved wrong.

To see that power (and maybe exceeded) in a console is simply fantastic !!

Either platform will be a great choice.

Oh dont get me wrong, I'll probably buy both since both will be future proof for at least 5 more years if not longer considering. (Or i'll be wrong and both will be replaced in 2 years by supercomputers named HAL)

I wouldnt say the PS3's graphics will be twice as good, but the Cell processor has twice as much computing power as the Xbox360's processor which means it is going to be able to display more complex processes on the screen. They showed some demos of how powerfull the Cell processor was and basicly it was able to render all sorts of complex stuff in real time using only the processor without the use of the GPU at all. I believe their was some hype about pixel shaders also which basicly make common texture maps obsolete. (pixel shaders is how movie scenes are rendered in CG) Now I cant say they will use 'just' pixel shaders but it could do something like 150ish shader operations per cycle, and at 3.2ghz that's a lot of shader power that can help add to realism of a scene.

As for displaying on HD sets, I have no doubt they will be able to display much more crisp than even a PC will when output to a TV. (Seeing as PC's are not designed to be used on TV's and consoles are.) I've hooked my PS2 up to my Dell widescreen moniter and it had problems displaying sharply on that unless I ran it at the tiny mode which basicly displayed it at the input resolution which was tiny on the screen. Considering the PS3 supports 2000x1000 graphics, even the largest of wide screen LCD computer moniters and TV's will be able to take full advantage of these resolutions. Hell, i'll probably hook the PS3 into my computer moniter, that way I get the best sharpness and I can play at my desk. :)

Edit: This pretty much sums up the PS3 system specs. What i'm trying to figure out is the core has 8 SPE but they say "1 reserved for redundancy". Does this mean it may be activated at some time by some software update or by specific games or such? Perhaps it isnt activated for the sake of pulling so much power or generating so much heat in a small case? I just cant see having a processor like this with 1/8th of it turned off for redundancy. I smell a future of hacks to activate it making the PS3 even more insane. :burnout:

Super Mario Brothers played great in 1985, they got that down pat, they just need to keep updating the look of things. GT and Forza play great, just gets down to which one you'd rather play.

Auto Modelista looked great but didn't play as good as GT4 (or really any racing game. HA!).

Gameplay has evolved a lot since the days of Mario, but it's always been (and will continue to be) in danger of falling completely into a rut of copycats and cookie-cutter license and franchise titles. Right now, only 90% of games would fall into that category. There's so much the medium can do, but no one wants to take the risk (and it looks like no one wants to play something different). It's just kind of disheartening that the wrapper always takes priority over the meat-and-taters of what you're doing with your button presses.
