Dammit you're right bear!!! I want it in my collection! Nice old gun, I LOVE LEVER ACTIONS! Have you shot it? (I'm guessing "no" if you don't know the caliber)...

I wanna buy a big loop next though:

Wanna be Cowboy^^^ lol

And no I haven't shot it yet, even when I do figure out what caliber it is i still probably won't shoot it, it hasn't been fired in about 30 years

I believe '73's were .44-40 or .38-40, short action. That's a blackpowder rifle and the actions aren't particularly strong, so have a gunsmith check it out before firing. Factory smokeless powder cartridges for those old guns are loaded to black powder pressures, particularly the newer 'cowboy' rounds. Nice rifle, keep it original.

awesome! my oldest is a 1920's era colt pistol that i plan on giving to my kids one day. if you get itchy to shoot it, don't- buy a brand new one. my 1894 cowboy:

Ok I lied but not intentionally.

Kiss My Goat ran the #'s on the gun for me and came back with this:

made in 1885. It's what they call "third Model".
They came in .44-40 and .32-20 with afew in .22. More common was the .44-40.

I am pretty sure that it is the .44-40

Built in 1885....WOW!!!

You better get it appraised.
It is probably worth quite a bit.
Even if you don't want to sell it you need to have an appraised value for insurance pruposes.
