View Full Version : Have you ever had to Draw your weapon on Anyone?

Just wondering if anyone can share any experiences. Its hard for me to imagine my reaction and feelings if I had to draw my weapon on anyone. I hope I never do. I was told that once you draw your weapon, you are committed to using it, although you hope you won't have to.

My friend once had to draw on someone. Some guy had road rage and followed him. My friend got to his destination, other guy came out with a guy with a knife and my friend drew his gun. The guy scurried off without thinking twice.

Only once in the 13+ years I have had a CWP. Some friends had an altercation with some intoxicated individuals, which led to those people pulling a gun on my less armed friends. My AR15 convinced all involved parties to cease hostilities. The situation was so legally questionable that I thank god I didn't have to fire, but I was NOT going to let some asshole shoot one of my friends. There have been a couple of other instances where I believe that making my concealed weapon "accidentally" not concealed probably prevented a robbery attempt.

You never know how your going to react until you need to. Every situation is different and anybody that says "well, if I had been there, this is what I would have done" probably has never been in that kind of situation.
Your smart to consider this before the need ever arises because "mind set" is a (if not THE) major factor to your success. A lot of people can shoot a gun and some can even shoot them well, but few can/will react appropriately in a quickly deteriorating situation.

Wow. Quite a story. Did you have any time to think or did you just react?

How much did having a dog change the situation?

On a similar note, I have been strongly considering attending a self defense class. One that focuses on how & when to draw a fire arm. I also want to attend a law class on the legalities of the issue.

I had the shotgun locked & loaded once investigating suspicious activity in the backyard at night during a power outage. Fortunately it turned out OK, but on the way out the door into the dark it was sorta intense, with me thinking "Man, I hope I don't have to use this thing".

I'm thankful we live in a relatively safe society.

I Almost Had To Once...

I Was On The Higway Riging My Motorcycle With A Friend Riding His Beside Me, He Changed Lanes From The Left Lane To The Middle Lane. We Had One Car In Front Of Us So I Looked Over To Verify The Lane Was Clear And As I Looked Back Forward To Initiate The Lane Change The Guy In Front Of Me Brake Checked Me To Almost A Complete Stand Still On The Highway, I Swerved And Missed His Car And When I Got Beside The Car He Swerved Over And Hit Me On My Bike And Pushed Me Across 2 Lanes Of Traffic While My Friend And 4 Cars Watched.

Somehow I Did Not Go Down, So Then We Followed Him For 25 Miles. Guy Had 3 Little Kids In The Back Seat.

About 20 Mile Down The Road I Motion To My Friend To Follow The Guy And I Pulled Off And Called The Hipo, Adv Them Of The Situation And Adv I Would Call Back And To Get Some Officers Enroute. As I Was Getting Back On The Bike A Truck Stops On The Highway And Looks At Me And Then Takes Off. I Get On The Bike And Blaze Past Him And Catch Back Up To My Friend.

Then The Truck Catches Up And Treis To Force Me Off Of The Road. After Another Mile Or So We All Come To A Stop, Me And My Buddy Stay About 150ft Ahead Of The Truck And The Car That Hit Me.

Then The Guy Driving The Truck Comes Out Of His Truck With Something In His Hand Screaming How He Is Going To Kick Mr Ass, I Advised Him To Stay Away From Me. He Kept Coming At Me And Was About 50ft Away And Onec Again I Advised Him To Stay Away From Me, He Got With In 20ft Of Me And I Raised My Shirt And Put My Hand On My Gun And Told Him If He Did Not Stop Moving Towards Me And Threatening Me I Would Be Forced To Pull My Gun And Shoot Him.

He Stopped Right There And Was Like "who The Heck Are You Then?"...i Guess He Thought I Was A Officer At That Point.

5 Minutes Later 6 Cop Cars Show Up, I Was On The Phone With The Dispatcher And Advised Her What Had Happened And She Freaked Out On Me Telling To Put My Gun Away, I Was Like It Never Came Out And I Was Legally Carrying My Gun.

Trooper Gets There, They Disarm Me And After Having Me Right Out A Statement And Everything Tell The Guy That Next Time He Might Want To Be Careful About Threatening People As I Was With In My Right To Shoot Him On The Spot. Dud Freaked Out After That.

Ends Up Guy That His Me Was His Dad And That Was His 3 Kids In The Car, Dad Called Him On The Phone But Neglected To Tell Him As To Why The Bikers Were Following Him And That He Had Hit Me.

Sad Thing Was The Freaking Da Declined To Press Charges Becasue I Was Not Injured.

That Was My One And Only Time I Almost Drew On Someone.

Could you imagine that shit? Some drunk asshole pulls a gun on somebody thinking he's hot shit, and then the guy's friend pulls a fucking AR15 out of his trunk? I bet that guy pissed himself...

Yeah The Grandfather Never Told His Son He Hit Me With His Car, Just Told Him We Were Following Him. Son Over Reacted And Almost Got Shot For It.

Then The Son Was Talking To My Buddy And Asked Him If I Really Had A Gun On Me, My Buddy Told Him Yeah Do You Remember Him Grabbing Under His Shirt, Guy Said Yeah, Buddy Was Like That Was His Gun He Was Grabbing.

Guy Just Could Not Believe It, Even Wors When The Ohp Told Him He Could Of Have Been Shot.

I LOL'd at having a AR-15 in the trunk...

On a serious note, after this happened...

http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2550 16

I now carry and can only hope there will never be a situation in which I'm faced with having to draw my weapon.

I too would like to attend a self defense class to better train myself at handling escalating situations. I've grown up around guns, they are not my issue, its making sure I make the right decision when it matters.

Thanks for the info in this thread, good reading...

In order for me to legally carry my AR15 loaded in the car, the barrel needs to be under 16"

For a barrel to be under 16", its classified as a SBR, and needs BATF permission...

To buy the BATF tax stamp to build a SBR, one needs to obtain the signature of the Chief LEO (sheriff) for my county...

I happen to live in a county with a liberal sheriff that refuses to sign any BATF papers... UGH....

Can't do the Living Trust or Corporation? LLC is how I did my 4 suppressors, and you don't have to get a smurfing LEO signoff :)

I had some warning that there could be a problem, that's when I chose to put my gun on and look around outside. The BG was probably watching me. I'm just glad I left it on when I went back inside. We were very lucky that we had some warning of imminent danger, if it had been a total surprise as I'm sure was intended, I would not be writing this now. The attack itself was like a bad movie, surrealistic, hard to believe that it was happening. No time to think really. Time slowed down, a billion thoughts went racing through my head. It seemed like it took forever for me to draw my pistol, at the same time I was crouching, getting small. I had NO idea that a bullet just passed through my shoulder. I heard and felt nothing and I was only aware that he was shooting because of the muzzle flash and the revolver bucking in his hand. When I finally was able to return fire he had slammed up behind a wall for protection and my own shots sounded like little "pops". I never took my eye off of where I wanted my bullets to go and never glanced at my sights. It was point blank range. Every bullet went exactly where I wanted them, they just failed to go through the wall he was hiding behind (being brick behind the sheetrock.:turbonaug). In reenacting the incident, we figure from the time he pointed his gun at my wife and told her to "freeze" (outside), chase her and my daughter through the mud room, laundry room, kitchen, hall, den, to where I was (in the living room), and I was able to return fire, took no more than 8 seconds... There really is no time to think.
To give my wife the credit she is due, as she was running into the den from this mad man who was shooting at her and close behind in chase, she was yelling "Man with a gun, man with a gun!" alerting me... It gave me those crucial moments to at least get out of my chair and face the demon as he entered the den.
(She's my Hero!)
If the attacker has his way, the attacks will always be a surprise. The element of surprise is the BG's greatest advantage.

The dog saved our lives. That was the reason my wife went outside, to see what she was barking at. I'll never be without one and I'll never ignore one when they sound the alarm.

Like anything else, the more you train, the better off you and you're loved ones will be. Chance favors the prepared. It's very important to know the legalities and such but when it comes to self defense and it's either you or them, the laws be damned. They will be the least of your worries.

You can easily get around the LEO signature. Do a Living trust. No need for finger prints or pictures either. Much better way to do it IMO.

3 times here!
1.Drove cabs in college,,picked up a dude that was F-up! He said he hated white people and was going to start killing them! He then said that he was going to kill me and was going for something in his pocket! At 40mph, I slammed the cab in park,,turned around in my seat with my 9mm in his face! His eyes were WIDE! Car did a 180. Held him at gun point until the cops got there! He cried the whole time! Fool had a knife in his pocket! Did not have to shoot him but came damn close! Cops said I should have!
2. Another time a dude came running up to my car at a red light and yelled hey you! get out of the car! I pulled up my .45 1911 and he pretty much broke 10 world records in running!! LOL...
3. Pulled out on a dark road,,hear tires ripping,,and a car came slidding up beside me,cut me off and then jumped out of his car,and then popped his trunk! I said WTF AH!?!? He said I pulled out in front of him! I said, at night time we drive with lights on AH! He shrank about 4 feet! LOL,,,I then said WTF are you going to your trunk for? Started to open the trunk saying I'll show you MFer! I pulled the .45 1911 out and pointed it at him and said 10 to 1 you will not make it AH! He ran into his car and left at a high rate of speed with his trunk flapping in the wind!! LOL
All true stories!

This was all actually in north Louisiana. I went to Louisiana Tech and drove cabs there. Gramblin University was next door.. Your complete guide to setting up a trust, for $45, they'll even send you all the paper work. This is who will be setting up my trust.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=244&t=158173

Here's a general guide to Class III weapons and ownership issues.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=6&f=17

Make sure any firearm you do make meets state restrictions and complies with all laws, this just all laws. The trust just allows you to get around an anti-gun LEO, not avoid the gun laws of the country/state. There are local state by state forums, and if you have any questions on carrying or other firearms laws, go there.

Twice to prevent robbery in my driveway.

Luckily I have never had to pull the trigger. Both times I was fully prepared to do so if necessary. Had the potential assailants made a single advancement towards me after I proclaimed the need to protect myself, I would have pulled the trigger without hesitation.

I was told that once you draw your weapon, you are committed to using it, although you hope you won't have to.

The thing about this... If you pull you weapon, you must be committed to use it, but being committed to use it does not mean everytime you pull it out you need to shoot someone, the reality is most C&C cases do not actually end up with shots fired. Most criminals lose their gusto when their prey is better armed then they are, and turn tail and run.

The closest i've ever gotten to pulling it was when I was in one of the worst areas of Minneapolis for work, driving in my car, sitting at a stop light, out of the corner of my eye see a guy paying too close of attention to my car, and not hey cool car type of attention. He started walking toward me, I pulled it, and kept it below the window, so he couldn't see it, luckily the light turned green and the cars infront of me got going before anything happened.

Things like that may have been nothing, and luckily I didn't have to find out if it was something.

Many times.
Never had a problem during the events-steady and ready to act.
However, after some of the more harrowing examples, found that once the adrenaline dialed down a bit, I needed to sit down for a couple and regroup.

Close friend that I used to partner with was involved in a wild shoot out that left the other individual dead and my friend with a couple of nice bruises where the rounds hit his vest.
I'll never forget his phone call in the middle of the night. He was so amped up that I couldn't recognize his voice. He said he was wide awake for three days.

I fully understand the "dumbass lifestyle in your 20's" comment. The only problem is that back when I let myself get into sticky situations that could have been avoided, I expected trouble. Nowadays, a serious situation will probably come as much more of a shock. I feel that I was better prepared back when I was a dumbass.
