Happy early birthday..After seeing 3rdgengto's CG with the gloss black I really don't think i'd go with any other color..I did mine flat and they turned out ok but I think I should have went with the gloss..

Haha, and me and my gf were checking out your car too. I knew I had seen it before because I recently saw your thread with pictures of those new AZA's. I just couldn't remember your username. BTW, the woman loves the wheels, and she is a tough sell when it comes to appearance mods. She convinced me to keep the black stockers after I bought them on a wim and I get nothing but compliments everywhere I go. I respect her opinion most because she has the best car taste of anyone I have ever met and she has boobies.

Those look really good. I like the grandsport stripes. Now i know what my stock 17s would look like dark. I picked my car up with the stockers chrome but i like black better. Good job.

Try your local Autozone..I am pretty sure they carry the Dupli-color HP wheel paint in that color in stock..

I've been thinking about doing something very similar with my 17's, except I'm wanting to use satin black instead of gloss/semi-gloss, and I'm going to leave the lip silver and only paint inside the spoke indentions like you have done (if that makes sense).

I'd like to see someone make some vinyl cutouts to accomplish this, that way if I dont like it, or want to remove them in the future I could without too much hassle. Any idea who would be willing to produce them (i'd take the measurements, just need a laser cutter to cut them).

Is it really necessary to make those kind of comments in the "Official Painted Stockers" thread? If you don't like black rims, then at least have the decency not to comment.


Taste is subjective. A lot of us see things we don't like, but we have tact. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if someone came into your thread saying things that you like sucks.

Thats cool bro, you don't have to like it. A little dressing on the tires and they would blend much better. Also, the sun was behind me in that shot.

man i agree! i would just like to know how they got the line around the edge perfect. any ideas... i have a stock 18 i polished out but there are too many imperfections in the casting of the spokes... wanna do the same, glossy black w/ polished lip.

how resistant is that stuff to rock chips? I suppose it is good because its bumper paint. also I REALLY want to get the color your wheels are in the shade vs in the sun,just the darker gray would do that I assume?

It's actually vinyl pinstriping! I loved the pre-cut "time attack rings" BUT I wanted to see what it would look like BEFORE spending $40. So, I ran down to the local parts store and bought a $4 roll of pinstriping. It was SUPER easy! My best suggestion is take the wheel off the car, lay it on the ground and sit over the top of it to lay the pinstripe down. You really just have to follow the outer edge of the wheel. Pinstriping is very forgiving, if you get out of line, you just pull it back up and lay it back down!

It's been on there since Feb/Mar and hasn't even thought about peeling back up! It looked so good I just left it and haven't even bothered with the "time attack" rings. PM me if you need me to be more specific, but for $4 dollars for like 20 feet of pinstriping you can mess up a couple times AND still have plenty left to finish the job!

tape'd the wheels and paint was like $10 total. Spend a long time sanding tho.

These look great, but does anybody out there have an MBM w/ painted stockers? I've thought of doing mine in a dark charcoal. I think the silver wheels look good against the MB, but the finish on mine are trashed (previous owner tried to clean them with something harse, and it shows). Either way I'm gonna have to refinish them this winter...can't really see spending $$$ just to have the same thing. _De

Thats exactly what I did, found a guy on craigslist selling four stockers WITH tires, haggled him all the way down to 150 bucks plus my 05 tails... tires arent perfect but definitely driveable haha Definitely gives you a feel for whether you like them or not before powdercoating

Yeah I believe there is... He used a color REAL similar to mine and it has a slight metallic flake in it. BUT you have to be close to the wheel and catch it in the light just right OR you would never notice.

I had it done, the guy charged around $100 per wheel (if i remember right) to blast and coat and clear the rims.

i appreciate it man, i'm hoping its just an isolated thing with the ONE rim. it looks like it bc i have been driving the piss out of the car with the other 3 on there and a stock 17 in place of the broken rim... powerslides, dumping the clutch, launching HARD and the others are holding up. i'm in the process of making a nice compilation of sending these tires off (open cutouts) before i get the rims redone :turbonaug

No clearcoat, just the powdercoating. Its certainly not flat, but not nearly as glossy as the paint.
The pictures are a little washed out. When theyre really clean the metallic grey shines through

Not too bad, considering I have no experience rattle-can painting, and my friend had very little experience. There were two parts that chipped a little because we didn't sand very well in those spots. One was in the lug nut cavity. I'll have to touch it up next week. Hopefully, I can get some pics sometime this week. The car looks so much better :) especially since I fixed some of the curb rash. :bomb:

Mine didn't turn out too bad for 17s & about 45 min of work. They're a graphite metallic but also have texture, people probably think they're black at night though. While the wheels were done I also de-winged it & took out the grills. I tried to find a decent before & after..

I paid ~$40 per wheel for the pc on my stock 18's. I've seen others pay anywhere from $35 up to $100 per wheel...

Hints:

1) Shop around. Lotsa guys doing pc'ing now, but ask for pics of previous work OR go to the shop and check out their work.
2) Use an in-stock color. If they have to order the powder they may try to make you pay for more than they actually use. If you use a color they normally stock they might cut you a deal because the powder may have already been paid for to do a much bigger job (blacks and greys are a safe bet).
3) Take as much business with you as you can. Try to find some other locals that are needing/wanting pc work done too. Go to the pc'er and see what kinda pricing he will give you if you bring "x" amount of business.

Here are some 17s I just picked up. For all black they're not bad. I like the shade of black but I'm going to paint them like the mini 18s when the tires wear out.

the thing is the 18s flow so smoothly with the GTOs and look real good. the 17s still look pretty basic to me.

i had 17s stock, but just had to get my hands on some 18s to do them up like i did :)

That looks really good, now I'm wondering weather I should do red stripe around the rim or silver like that.. I'm planning on painting mine titanium grey metallic like a previous poster put on his TR GTO, so I think red might suit it better.

BTW your bumper difference between fender difference in color looks a lot like mine :D seriously, I hate cheap re-paint jobs and I should had never had the dealer "repaint it"

You need some tire shine on yours 04cosmos, the dirt messes up the look.

I have a set of "stock" wheels I dropped off at the powder coater yesterday..... they're not "stock" for the GTO, but for another GM car. We'll see how they turn out

When I did them this last time I corrected the wavering lines at the end of the spokes and did the grey part in charcole.

Got my 18's back today, they are perfect! I tried doing the rattle can thing, but could not get the finish I wanted. Had a paint shop do them, sandblasted, painted, clearcoated. I didn't want the extreme contrast of graphite and QSM, picked greystone metallic, it's an 06 Silverado color.

Is that darker or lighter than the stock color? Or is it the stock color? ...looks pretty much the same without a comparison.

It's darker, photo doesn't show it well. The color is an 06 Silverado Greystone Metallic. Perfect contrast IMO for my QSM, graphite was a bit too dark for my taste.

I painted my stock 17s a few weeks ago and finally got around to tossing them onto the car to see how they look. They're only going to be used during the winter, since I've got a set of TSW Thruxtons for summer use.

Yeah something about those doesnt look right to me. maybe try the same pattern but dont go all the way to the edge of the rim so theres a silver lip. that or just do the whole wheels.
