I'm a little baffled by the FAQ that says a 275-18 will fit but not a 275-17. 275 is the section width so a 275-17 has the same section width a 275-18. Dose that 1/2" diametere difference make it rub? I can't imagine it being that close.

Don't see what you are talking about. FAQ says 275s in 17 or 18 will fit the REAR of the GTO...

Basically 275's aren't designed to be squeezed onto a 8 inch rim. Minimum recommendation is 8.5 inch width. I suppose if you got a 17 x 8.5 inch rim with the proper offset you could do it.

Everyone is right about not trying to squeeze a 275 onto an 8" rim. You can fita 9" rear rim onto your GTO. The problem is that not many wheel manufacturers are making 17" diameter rims in matching 8"/9" widths. Most upgrade to an 18" staggered setup. I test fit some Camaro SS rims to the rear of mine. The 275/40R17 looked like it had more room before hitting the fender lip. I just couldn't find any replica wheels in 17"x8" for the front.
