View Full Version : Rubba dub dub... toyos and CSLs

Slapped on my new wheel & tire combo two days ago and I have a pretty substantial rubbing issue. Here's the skinny on the situation...

Wheels: 19" (staggered set - 8.5 front & 9.5 rear) CSL reps
Tires: Toyo T1R - 255/35R19 front & 285/30R19 rear
Suspension Upgrades (all pedders) - 5/16" raise drag coils(2589)/ GSR rear shocks(9095)/ GSR struts(9985)

I did some grinding and it helped a little but not enough, my local body shop is very very very hesitant to grind anymore than I already did (which wasn't very much). I have an appointment with them today at 10am to get it up on a lift and do some more action. *sigh* They'll do some hard sanding and put a urethane coating around the lip to fend off moisture and if it still rubs I guess I'll put drag bags in but I think it already sits up too high in the rear as it is.

Wondering if this is sounding a bit strange to anyone, especially since I'm not putting any wheel/tire combo on that is out of the ordinary AND I put the damn drag springs in.

thanks for taking the time to read this bit, any comments are much appreciated.

(Oh and another thing... the rear end squeaks like a moth*r fu***r (thought the new shocks and struts would solve it but they didn't) - ideas on that also?)

285 is a bit big. What is the offset in the rear? Can you have it shaved a little bit?

Do you read these forums much? That wheel/tire is HUGE for the rear of this car...

ok, so an update. The tires are staying on the car and I'm getting the fenders rolled saturday at a Pedders dealer. I'll see where that gets me.

I would say the offset too...but i have only tried to fit wide rims and tires on a s14 so there is more room on the 240sx. Hope everything works out alright.GL with fender rolling.

it's going to be harder to roll it now that you've ground some off. 285s on 19" wheels with that offset is going to be hard anyways

Diameter doesnt matter. It wouldnt be any different on 17 or 18in rim with same specs

Call around your local machine shops and see if theycan machine the mounting surface about 3mm to increase the offset. After about 3-5 calls, you should be able to find a place that can do it or even a recommendation

Sorry dude, but they are always gonna rub, just to big... time for drag bags. Gotta measure and size up wheels before you spend big bucks. I am sure you are aware of that at the moment...

I'm confident that after rolling the fenders I'll be comfortable with it, if not, no big deal I'll just do the drag bags or do what purplenurple suggests. My tire guy (close friend) should have caught this before mounting or ordering anything. Needless to say he's making up for it here and there.

Daytime pics?

it's been nothing but wet the last couple days here and if I go anywhere I hit construction which turns the GTO into a very dirty car :( so daytime pics won't come until next week right after her last waxing for the season before she goes away for the winter.

I like that idea. might give it a shot as a last resort.

Anyways it still looks sweet to me and I'll change up what I need to so that it works. I know cornering will take a hit regardless off the bat but tires wear then you get new ones.

Fill me in on the installation? right now it only rubs when I put down the torque (duh), had to let a mustack GT over take me at a light becuase of it. :(

Nittos run smaller than most brands. measure the actual width of the tire

285 Nittos and Toyos are kinda like a thick chick fitting onto size 4 designer jeans she just bought. Kinda like comparing a 2008 dollar to a a 1988 dollar. Throw some KDW2s on there and see what happens. Probably have to take the car to a body shop for fender repairs.

KDWs are only a tad wider but the shoulder is much much more squared off.

That is the problem with using them on the back of GTOs.

I like the look of the Toyos better on the GTO.

I like the look of KDWs on Mustangs.

A 285 is a 285 regardless of what company manufactures it - 285mm wide in both cases.. The rub is coming from the tire being a little too wide/the rim not having enough offset.. Drag Bags/Rolling the fenders should fix it...

The car does look pretty sexy though... I think the CSL's and Privat Netz are the best looking wheels on our cars...

Grind it as much as you want but with that offset and a 285 it will still rub.

Just change the tire man don't jack your whole back up to make TIRES fit...it's not like 285s are THAT much better than 275s which will fit without a problem

Went up to Victory Racing Engines today and had Marc roll my fenders. Wet weather so I couldn't test it to well but considerably better just from driving up there. Now all I need is a trip to the body shop and I'll be content. Thanks VRE
