Stopped in at Cabela's store yesterday to do some gift shopping. Went over to the gun department to see what they had. The line for buying had 20 or so folks waiting to be served. The background check had a 30 minute wait with some waiting outside until their name was called. Was just browsing, saw a sweet, used, Walther PPK .380 for $899.00 before tax! New S&W .38 Special was $699.00 not including ammo! Checked out with my new shirts, $19.99 each.....lol
Asked the sales guy when leaving if gun sales were that busy all the time. He told me day after the election for President they sold over 500 guns, been busy ever since.

Yeah, overpriced for sure, and it was a used one. I know the Walther PPK is a nice piece, but I would not pay that much for one. Every new gun was at full retail, plus more! I wasn't in the market for anything, just saw the long line in the gun department so I went over for a look.

LCP is better. Snag free design (easier to draw), more comfortable in the hand, more potent round, and same basic size.
Oh, and lighter weight to boot.

These are the two I pistols I have and I am not real fond of the
.40. The .22 is ok, but I'd like something smaller and lighter weight. The Beretta seems to fit that bill. It was running about $325 used.

OH DEAR GOD that was like pouring lemon juice into my eyes.
Having those two guns... I don't know what to say. You'd be safer throwing an infant at the bad guy than trying to shoot him with those things.
Tell me, what are your needs for your next acquisition?
Carry ever?
Range only for fun?
We'll work from there and find the perfect gun for you and your needs.
I could never sleep at night knowing you own either of those guns....

I am just learning, and those fit the budget. Range shooting only. My 13 year old kid uses them too. I'm a damn good shot with the .22 rifles that we have but I can't seem to get my bearings with the handguns.
There have been some isolated incidents at my workplace that have given the police reason to encourage pepper spray in my desk. I have had people tell me to keep a gun there too. But, not only is that against the law, it seems rather drastic to me.
I figure if I have it there and loaded, I damn well better be ready to pull the trigger.
It would take a lot to make me aim a loaded gun at another human being.
The way the world is going, I figure I need to learn and be prepared to protect my family, property and myself.

You've certainly thought it through, and have a good idea of what owning and carrying a gun entails. That's really good to hear.
Anyone who carries a gun on them, or has constant access to one needs to know without a doubt that if they were in a life or death situation that they could take another human life without hesitation. Because if you present a gun, and hesitate.. the situation is much more likely to become fatal for the victim.
All that aside... let's focus on a good, fun gun that you can practice with and enjoy at the range.
The first, and best suggestion would be to visit a local gun range where they rent guns to shoot. Place as many different kinds of guns in your hands to find what 'fits' you most comfortably. I can guarantee that the Hi-Point does not. It likely feels very clunky, and heavy in your hands. While you have a world of options available, I'll suggest a few as a jumping off point:
Glock 19
CZ75 (or clones like the EAA Witness)
Walther P99 (or clone S&W SW99)
Springfield XD9 in either "Service" (4") or "Tactical" (5") sizes
HK P2000 or the smaller P2000SK
HK P30
HK USP9 or USP9 Compact
Sig P228
Sig P226 (bigger, but fairly slim grip if the 228 is too fat for your hand)
Beretta PX4 Storm
Taurus 24/7 Pro
S&W M&P9
The reasons you can't get a handle on the Hi-Poit is because it doesn't fit your hand properly, and it is built very cheaply. The barrel lockup is loose (makes the gun inaccurate), the frame to slide fit is sloppy (inaccurate and can cause reliability issues), and the trigger is long and hard to pull (jerking it makes you inaccurate)... so you have the deck stacked against you.
All of the above listed guns will be accurate, high quality, and reliable in every way. I also suggested 9mm for all of them because it would be the best all-around round for you. The recoil and muzzle flip is low, the ammo is readily available (and not too expensive), and if you kept the gun in-home for defense, 9mm is more than adequate for that too.
While you don't need to spend a fortune, and you don't need match-grade accuracy... you should be buying based on quality, and when you do that, you'll enjoy the gun more because you'll do better at the range, and want to shoot it more often.
$500 is a good average price typically on a new gun. The ONLY guns I can suggest buying used are Glock or the Springfield XD. That's because the guns are built like tanks, and it is nearly impossible for the previous owner to have done anything to it that could adversely effect reliability. In that case, you could get off for maybe $400 if you look around.
I typically spend $1,000 and more (up to $4,000) per pistol, but I carry daily and put my life on it every day. So my needs are greatly different than yours. Then again... one of my favorite carry guns are the Glock 19 which can be bought for about $550... so it's all relative.
While I'm not a proponent of buying name brands for most things, do realize that the big name brands in guns are your safest bets. Things like Hi-Point, Jennings, etc are junk... and should be avoided at all costs.
So this is a very, very basic run-down... once you have felt a few and decided what works best in YOUR hands, then test fire a few.. we can talk more!

Hey E, I've got a glock 23 already, also just got a 20rd mag for it. I was just checking Cabelas last weekend while out there, and saw the long line buying guns. If you like going to the range let me know, got a few other models to shoot :secret:

I don't use a gun for work, I carry on my personal time.
I guess you're commenting on the money I spend on a gun... it's a personal thing, I like to buy only the absolute best. When my life might someday depend on it, I want it to be as close to perfection as possible. I carry an HK P7M8 the most. They will run you about $1400 IF you can find one. They only import 500 per year to the US. My second favorite carry piece is the Springfield EMP, and they run $1150. My third runner up is my Glock 19 (TALO limited edition) that ran me $700. So no... I don't go cheap, but that's a personal preference.
I spent a lot of years in the industry (through my twenties) and worked as a tactical instructor, so I have dealt with pretty much every kind of gun made. I have also had to draw my weapon twice in defense of my life, so I take it very seriously.
I'm also thankful I live in a much safer area now. I am less likely to ever need to have one, but it is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Absolutely. And what's more, when you scour the internet, you tend to see more stories where anti-gun people turned into pro-gun people after they were mugged, raped, had their house broken into, etc. than the other way around. Wonder why that is?

No need to get defensive guys I just thought it was funny because me and my father think the same way and we are both NRA members. I am in the Army NG and my father was military and is a sheriff deputy so hold the flamethrowers. I love my guns, I think for a very different reason than most though. Yes I love my guns for the typical self defense. The thing everyone needs to understand is the right to bear arms wasn't just for defense against our neighbors, but also against corrupt and overtaxing government that decide that the bill of rights should no longer exsist. The day they try to take my guns is the day I will die. Charleston Heston-"From My Cold Dead Hands"
