alright, i am going to be buying a shot gun soon.....i want a 12 gauge tactical/bad ass looking gun. i am going to be using it for home defense, but mostly just blasting off a few rounds on my property in michigan.
i was thinking of a mossberg 500/590http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.as p?id=5&display=desc

or a benelli m2 tacticalhttp://www.benelliusa.com/firearms/special purpose.tpl

anyone have any experience with these? how much do they cost, they dont show prices on the website? also what else would you recommend?

Two excellent choices with endless possiblitles to modify them.

Mossberg is a solid brand, Benelli is top of the line and you will pay for it.

I have a Mossberg 500 20 ga. I use it for hunting, not home defense, so my priorities may be slightly different. Bought the gun from a friend to get him out of a tight spot, so I can't really comment on new price, but I think he got it for $200-300.

The gun is reliable, it hasn't jammed on me after dragging it though the woods and admittedly not getting cleaned like it should. It seems to be more accurate than me, but I haven't put as many target rounds through it as I would like. Call me crazy, but I carried a Browning semi-automatic before, and I like the Mossberg more.

Remington 870 would be another on to consider as well. That is what I have in a tactical setup.

Looked at Mossbergs....then looked at the Remington 870...went with the 870, seems like they are built better...

You want a nice platform to build on...do what my dad did, get a "retired" 870 law enforcement model, refinish it and replace the stock...cheap and a very well made shotgun.

I've had good luck with a couple of tactical Mossberg 500's Simple, reliable, effective.

I frequently hear people calling Benellis overpriced and finicky. Can't speak firsthand.

Next stop will be a Saiga 12 and some extra magazines for the coming food riots.

My Benelli isn't finicky.

And the 2 best guns in your stated interest are the mossberg 500 series, and the remington 870.

Impossible to go wrong, I personally prefer the 870 myself.

All good suggestions.

I prefer the M1 Super 90 myself (or the sister gun made by Beretta), and they are WAY more fun to shoot than a pump IMO.

If you want a pump, the Benelli M2 tactical is tops followed by the 870 and Mossy 500. The Benelli you linked to was actually the Supernova FYI. Supernovas can be had for under $600.

I had a Winchester 1300 Defender a couple years ago. I sold it because I needed some quick cash, but it was a decent, cheap gun. Aftermarket isn't as good on them as some of the others, but it seemed solid enough. I think I paid $260-something for it.

Benelli's (the non-combat ones) are not built for HD. They are built for hunting and sporting purposes.

Older Ithaca or Winchester Model 12. Police trade-ins are sometimes still found at gunshows. These older guns can be slam fired, i.e. you can hold the trigger down and keep pumping until empty.

I like that idea, though model 12s aren't exactly cheap anymore. Great hilarity ensued when I first discovered you could slam fire those old pump guns.

Newer Ithacas lack the slam-fire capability, as do every other shotgun brand I can think of. They had to be idiot-proofed due to unintentional discharges. Cops have accidentally shot people with the slam-fire effect. User error aside, Ithaca did make some nice guns. I still have an affinity for the Remington 870, however.

FWIW, I have a nice tactical Rem. 870 and a Benelli M1 Super 90. I bought my Benelli used for $895, my 870 new for $290. Both are great firearms and you can't go wrong either way, but my Benelli is much more fun to shoot.

They're not cheap. At least not here in Cali.

A good inexpensive gun is the Mossberg. They go from $250 on up. Leaves plenty for upgrades such as stocks & optics. The Remington is a good gun too but the Mossberg has a better safety switch and pre-tapped receiver for mounting a picatinny rail for your optics. The Remington either requires gun smithing or a special clamshell mount on the receiver to mount any optics.

As for shotguns in general, stick with pumps. Semi's can jamm or have problems with certain loads not cycling. If you still want Benelli, you can get a SuperNova pump action for about $450-$500.

Nice gun but its banned in some states. Saw it about 25 years ago at a local gun show for about $600. Should have picked it up then. Wonder what they're worth now?

Sure miss the good'ole days especially here in Cali. Nowadays you can't have any of the fun stuff here without spending at least $1000 - $1500. You guys in other states can laugh especially while you're pumping your goats with 93 while we in Cali are stuck with 91.

Remington 870. Great 'bang' for the buck IMO. Also MO, I think spending high dollar for a semi-auto shotgun for home defense is a little rediculous.

It is legal depending on the state. That shotgun requires a $5 AOW tax stamp from the ATF.

For home defense you probably wouldn't notice the difference between a benelli and a Mossberg. IMO I would go with a 500 special purpose. It is way cheaper then any benelli and will have the same reliability.

Also another thing I really like about Mossbergs, is the placement of the safety. It's not a real big thing but it's pretty convenient.

I would not recommend 3 inch shells for home defense. If you live in an apartment it can easily go through walls and injure a third party.

Remember home invasions are done by humans not by buffalo.

If you wanna save a couple bucks you could pick up a mossberg maverick 88. Basically the same as a 500, and most of the parts are interchangable. I just bought one a couple days ago for 220. mine has the 20 in. barrel and 8 round capacity.

FYI: Everything is legal. You can own grenade launchers, fully automatic rifles, even a LAW rocket launcher if you want to... it just costs. Either go Class III or pay for a lot of tax stamps.

And that shotty is legal where I live. Have seen a few at local gun shows. Doesn't appeal to me. When I fire a gun, I don't want it ripping my arm from the socket, or flying up and slamming me in the forehead.

Well, while that is true to a degree, that DOES vary state-to-state. REALLY so since the ATF ran out all the shade-tree FFL dealers and requires a storefront now. For example, where I live SBR's and cans are unobtainable unless your a class 3, and since you have to have a storefront, that makes it a practical impossibility for those of us that aren't filthy rich lol.

you guys are confusing the difference between having a class III dealers license, and simply owning a weapon subject to NFA regulations.

the price for an NFA transfer stamp has not changed. $200. or $5.00 depending on the type, good indefinately.

Getting the approval to purchase the stamp is what makes it difficult.

No, I'm not. In MI, you can't own a SBR - MI specifically disallows those and silencers.

So the only way you can get one is to get a class 3 licence, which they won't give you unless you have a FFL. Which they won't give you unless you have a storefront.

So In MI, if you want a SBR, or can - you prettymuch have to own a gunstore (or run one out of your barn lol).

Gotta remember that state laws vary, by state lol.

Ya. Given the fact that Shrike is from the most liberal gun state of them all, TX.... So Shrike, how does that gun rack look in you GTO?:gr_jest:

come on, man - everyone knows that the rack goes in your pick-up.

I actually used to drive around with my 1100 and a hot-shot in my gun rack when I was in high school - early 80's. Think that is taboo now. Actually got out of school early one day because the highway patrol called my parents - the cows got out and were walking down the highway - Dad was overseas...Texas is different.

Other things you will see in a gun rack are again the hot-shot, fishing poles, a cane, or a leather poker whip.
