I need a hobby so I figured I'd start shooting things. I used to go to the range a lot with my friend and his dad back when I was in Jr High, and ive always been fascinated by guns my whole life so i figured I'd get more into them. I got my gun license about a month ago and ive been looking around trying to decide what I want to get.

I decided on the 10/22 since there are tons of aftermarket parts and they are relatively cheap. At first i was going to get the most basic one i could find and then just buy better hardware little by little but now i think im just going to build one from scratch since i would be replacing pretty much every part of the gun anyway.

I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with the 10/22, i was wondering how difficult it was to assemble. It looks pretty easy, or at least somthing i could figure out after googling some things.

I'm new to owning guns, but i wouldnt consider myself a n00b when it comes to guns really. I know a lot of the technical terms for everything, and i have good understanding of how they work and everything.

I guess I'm just asking for opinions/advise on anything hardware for the gun. also what parts i should start looking at. The ones i can think of off the top of my head would be the stock, barrel, receiver (fully assembled w/ trigger and everything else) and then the commodities like sights/scope, mags, and what not.

This is really close to what i had in mind for the final product.

EDIT: Just found this schematic. Looks pretty simple.

its extremely easy to work on. check around pawn shops for a used old one (with a metal trigger guard) otherwise.... built from scratch with non ruger parts. i'd order a tactical solutions (XRING), or novak receiver(cheaper).

there is a ton of info at rimfirecentral.com the 10/22 gallery alone is a days read/view.

They are very easy to take down, remove one take down screw and the barrell band and it comes right apart.

Sad thing is none of the new Ruger 10/22's come with a metal trigger anymore. I have one of the new ones and it fires just fine so dont let all of the naysayers scare you away from a Ruger just because it doesnt have a metal trigger assembly.

my point was more, that the only thing ruger left in mine is the receiver, bolt and trigger housing. so unless you find an older one cheap, just buy all aftermarket. JMHO

Yeah but to counter that opinion, doesn't an aftermarket receiver cost as much as a new basic 10/22? It's been a couple of years since I built mine, but a Volquartzen receiver was over $200 when the whole rifle at WalMart was $180. So I just bought a new rifle & replaced almost everything.

Maybe things have changed . . .

No They Are Still Expensive, By The Time You Have The Barrel Recrowned, Put A New Trigger Group Into It And Replace The Reciever You Can Have Over $500 Into A Ruger 10/22.

Thats Alot For A Plinking Gun In My Eyes.

But with a 22 you can afford to plink all day long at 2-3 cents per round. So if you're going to spend a lot of time plinking, why not plink with something nice? And plink accurately?

One other thing, a fancy, pretty 10/22 is a chick magnet. That may not be important to you, just lettin ya know.

I started with the Wal*Mart version and built fron there. You can still go shoot now while doing the upgrades. Well unless you will do all the upgrades at once.

But I still say the CZ452 is a better plinker.

VQ has always been kinda $$$. but there are more options now. plus the price of a standard ruger (with the new plastic stuff) has gone up.

honestly i don't think you can go wrong on any direction you take on a 10/22. since they tend to breed :turbonaug:D

There have been a couple of recent threads about hotrodded 10/22s. Take a look at these for ideas.

Thanks man. I actually read through 2 of those threads when I was searching around for .22 ideas. lotta good info on em but no as much of the building aspect as i hoped for so thats why i started the new thread. I think im just going to try and find the most basic 10/22 i can find and just keep the receiver, and trigger assembly, sell the rest and build from there.

BTW does anybody know of any good outdoor ranges around the chicago area? More toward the west suburbs would be great. Aurora gun club its really nice, but its private and I've tried to get a membership there before with no luck.

10/22s are pretty simple to disassemble & reassemble. If you got basic mechanical skillz & common sense you'll be fine.
