View Full Version : Getting my self defense SG tomorrow!

Im picking up my first gun tomorrow, and Im pretty damn excited about it! I will be getting (maybe ordering and waiting) a Mossberg 500 tactical 12 gauge. It will be used primarily as home defense, but I wanted to get a gun that I could also use at the range, on my friends property (shooting targets), and at my parents house in north Georgia where people shoot clays.

At first I was going to get a standard 500 with a pistol grip (like the ones used in the JIC kits, or 500 cruiser) seeing as it is practically made for home defense with its 18.5" barrel and pistol grip. But because I wanted to shoot for fun as well, so I am leaning towards the tactical 500 because it is still 18.5" long, and is still fun for shooting at the range or clays.

Heres a picture of the tactical I hope to get:
Mossberg Tactical 500 (http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/ New/50420.jpg)

Does anyone know how much I am looking at spending for this gun? The price doesnt really matter much to me as I wouldn't want to skimp on price for something that must save my life or the lives of my family, if I ever need to; but I still want to know how much coin I will be dropping tomorrow :).

Also would it be any cheaper for me to buy a regular 500 and have the stock switched to the tactical? I probally wont be modifing it for a while, untill I am comfortable with it; and my friend will be teaching me the basic maintnance things.

Last question: what else should I get while Im there?
-Obviously the gun
-Ammo (still undecided on that, but I did read the home defense ammo thread; but I will talk to the people at the gun store to see what the reccomend or if anyone else here has a personal reccomendation)
-Maintainence materials (I dont know much about this yet)

Thanks for the help!
Alex

I was looking at a similar model with the collapsable stock and blue carbon fiber. It also had the doorbuster barrel. Sportsman warehouse had it for $429, I think I'll pick it up here soon.

I've seen regular black ones like above for around $350-$450 depending who's selling it. The last gunshow had inflated prices on everything, not just the assult rifles.

i just bought my 500 persuader on Friday, i wanted the tactical version as well, but got a crazy ass deal on this one, i plan to add the pistol grip/ar-stock and heat shield later on. I got it at Dick's sporting goods for $300, and then they took another $20 off. cant wait to shoot it.

pbmgoat - get a base 500 like tkosmen and just accesorize the krap out of it. For your application I defininitely would recommend you getting the Knoxx Industries Specops recoil reducing stock. It is way better than the adjustable stock on the 500 in your picture. Plus the 500 has a longer mag tube for 7+1 shots vs. 6+1 on the picture you showed.

I would get a Mossberg 500 Cruiser with a door busting muzzle break

and then add the 6 position ATI stock.

Well no gun for me today... got to the local gun shop 10 min to late, and Dicks said they couldn't order the gun I wanted; even thought they often get shipments of them

I would like to have the pistol grip for home defense, but you also must be 21 years old to own a shotgun with a pistol grip. I will probally have my local shop order me a plain-jane 500 with 18.5 barrel and then add a tactical stock and maybe some other cool stuff later. The said it would be low 400s :(... not as good as Dicks but at least they have what I want.

Hopefully Ill order it this week or Sat. :)

just go to dick's and get the gun i got, 500 persuader. Instead of a six shot tube, mine has an 8 shot. more rounds = better. also much cheaper, and it's a blank canvas so you can mod it however you like. i just bought the ati stock today at cabellas for like $60. so for $360 i have the exact gun that i want, instead of spending $450+ on the "tactical" model.

I have a 590, only real difference is the mag size (9+1). This is not a good gun to shootclays with... You CAN oobviously but its not very good beacuse of the barrel length and no choke. I got my 590 marine for $120 Like new without box from my gf's father acuse he never used it. But as others suggest just get a bare bones 500 and mod it if you want to. You can get a 500 for less than 30o dollars if you are patient.

In my opinion getting "tacti-cool" shotguns is a real waste of $. I mean its fun to show off, its fun to get new things and tinker with stuff but really any barebone model with ghost ring sights will serve any purpose you need. The only other accessory you would need/want for home defense would be a flashlight on the end.

I have seen some retarded shotgun setups which cost thousands of dollars that perform just the same as my 120 dollar stock 590.

my .02, But if you are just doing it for the enjoyment have at it im all for it... just dont think you need all of that stuff to have a "good gun"

I went to the range last weekend and put thirty or forty rounds through my new shotgun I got from my family for Christmas:

The H&R Pardner Pump Protector:

http://www.hr1871.com/images/zoom_pardnerpump_prot ector.jpg

I know it isn't a Mossberg or an 870, but this thing was very accurate, and was a blast to shoot. The only bad thing I've been able to find about it online was that it was made in China. Boo-Hoo, lots of shit I own has been made in China :gr_jest:

The best part is that you can get this gun for $200 most places, and it allegedly will fit most of the 870's accessories. I'm on the lookout for a magtube extender and a tac-lite for it.

that thing looks almost identical to an 870

Heh, having been made in China, I'm fairly sure it's a copy. In any case, it's a solidly built weapon, and I'm pretty glad to have it.

Woah, that's a great price! Do you know where they picked it up? Do any of the chains like Dick's or Bass Pro carry those?

ATI stuff is shit...I'm not saying you have to get a $300 tac stock but don't buy ATI garbage...and BTW...that's what the tactical Mossy 500 comes with...one of the reasons I got a Rem 870.

The last thing you want for a shotgun is a pistol grip only stock. It renders one of the worlds most versatile guns completely worthless.

I believe they do. Great gun for the money.

I see that the H&R is drilled and tapped on the receiver for a sight rail unlike the Remington which isn't. Thats one of the better features on the Mossberg that I like. Now if the H&R is built like a Remington, would Remington accessories fit on the H&R? Mossberg makes a breacher barrel for the Remington so would that fit on the H&R as well?

If it can shoot 1000rnds reliably, there's nothing wrong with made in China. Other reliable guns have come from there. (i.e. Norinco AKs)

I agree. I put a pistol grip on my short shotgun a few years back. Three rounds later it came off & the original stock went back on. Pistol grip only doesn't point well & HURTS to shoot.

Sure looks cool tho . . .

How long is the barrel on the 500 persuader? It looks a bit longer than the 18.5 barrel I want.

I saw a nice Remington 870 at Dicks, but it was almost $600... Its a nice looking peice though!

I wouldn't trust a shot gun stock that I wouldn't feel 100% comfortable bashing someone over the head with.. JMHO

+11ty. Not a fan of pistol grips on shotguns at all.

What about the Knoxx Specops stock? It has recoil reduction and its a pistol grip. The video on their site shows that it was also able to reduce barrel jump.

Ya, ATI stuff is junky. If you want tactical accessories for your Mossy you should look at the Blackhawk site:

Ok so its been longer than I thought but money is REALLY tight right now, but Im still looking for my gun. They had your gun tkosmen at Dicks and its a much better deal.

I am just worried that the 20 inch barrel is to big for home defense? It looks a lot bigger but the barrel is only 1.5 inches longer (but it does hold more shots).

20 inch barrel to big for home defense, anyone??

for the love of all that's holy, don't ask the idiots at the gun store a damn thing about ammo or anything else regarding maintaining and operating your shotgun-- that's like asking the sales monkey on the car lot a maintenance question about your car.

For ammo-- some good buckshot is your BEST self defense ammo for a home defense shotgun. Do NOT under any circumstance use birdshot, no matter what any idiot may try to tell you.

get a speedfeed stock for it. holds 4 extra shotshells right in the stock, and is solid as a rock. I've got one on my 590 and it's great.

Ok....? The question was about a 20 inch barrel for home defense, is that to big or should I stick to the 18.5?

As for the stock, Im going to leave it stock for now and maybe modify it down the road, I will get the holder that holds a few extra rounds though.

Edit: However those Speedfeed stocks look very nice, I may need to get one of those sooner than I thought.

I sure hope I dont regret the 20" barrel, but Ive held it a few times and it feels good (just never had it in the house hold situation). I will be doing some range shooting and maybe some sporting clays every now and then (to which the longer barrel is an advantage), and hopefully I never need to use it at home!

Hopefully I will pick up the Persueder in the next few weeks :)
