if i got a p7, it would have to be the m8. i do not really care for the mag release on the heel of the gun like the psp's have.

Out of those I'd get the HK45c. But none of those would be tops on my list of things to get.

Depends on what you want, but if I had to choose one out of my nine, it would most likely be my first pistol I bought. My HK USP .45. My next two purchases will be (IF I ever find them) a HK P30 in 9mm and either a Wilson Combat CQB or Nighthawk GRP Recon. Ugh, I want one......or two.

XD compact is just a shorter grip, but it does have an extended magazine to make it full sized grip, just like the standard XD. I checked one out at a gun show and personally don't care too much for the short grip, since it feels weird to me (as did Walther P99 compact). I would probably always use the extended mag, which would defeat the purpose of getting the compact...unless...carry as compact and reload with extended mag.
Great gun either way, though, I'm sure. (I have XD-40).

sorry i meant to say subcompact, ooppss. i wonder if my hand would fit one with a pierce extension.

Subcompact and compact have the same grip and both accept the extended mags. The subcompact has the shorter barrel (3" vs 4" standard).

it will, the pearce grip extension is a wonderful thing and brings the front down far enough to feel like a full grip without printing like a full grip for conceal carry. I have one on my SC40

I have a P229. If you want something smaller still you could try the P239.

what size are you looking for and caliber?
I have two 226's and love them. But from asking about a compact you might like a 229 better.

I have a 229, and still think it's too big for concealed carry (comfort in mind).
Go 239 max, 232 if you don't mind .380.

Hi guys,
It's my first post here.....sorry it's about guns and not cars ;)
A few questions:
What are you planning to do with the pistol? Target practice / sport or defence?
Is it something you will carry or just keep around the house for home defence?
How much time will you spend with it? Will you take time to clean / lube or is it something that will sit in the bedside table until that one time you need it?
How much time will you have to practice? 1 / day? 1 / week? 1 / month? 1 / year?
Have you shot a lot of pistols before? If so, what calibre and what type?

Whoops, I didn't see that. Well, I probably did but forgot, it happens when you get to my age ;)
That said, here's my $0.02 worth:
Your choice of guns are like your choice of shoes. You'll find one that suits you and that doesn't necessarily mean it suits anyone else. A big part of how comfortable you will be with it just depends on how well it 'fits' you. So advice from others is definitely a good thing, you can probably take from it what you paid for it.
If you are going to carry it, you need to be comfortable with it. Not only carry comfort but also shooting comfort. If it's uncomfortable, you won't practice much and if you don't practice much, you shouldn't be carrying it. Usually, that means you want something with a manageable recoil. How much recoil you can take is unique to everyone, but generally speaking, 9mm and .45 ACP are probably more manageable than .357SIG and .40S&W (definitely more so than 10mm), but you'll find you own limits.
If it's for carry purposes, you want something small and light, especially in summer when it's harder to conceal under light clothes and you can't really wear shoulder or OWB holsters.
I assume it's carry for defence. In that case, you'll want a decent calibre and capacity. On some gun forums on I'm on, you'll hear endless debate over whether 7 rnds of .45 ACP is better than 15 rnds of 9mm, there's no right answer, but suffice to say you probably want 9mm or better.
As far as quality and reliability go, just stick with a name you have heard of (SIG, Glock, Beretta, S&W, Springfield, etc.) and you'll be fine. You'll hear endless debate on gun forums about how "Glocks suck" and such, but it's BS.
If it's hot and sticky where you are, and you don't want to clean / lube often, you may want to look at plastic guns (Glock, Springfield XD, etc.) to minimize rust.
If you don't want to put time into maintenance, you may want to consider a J-frame revolver. They're small enough to carry but have sufficient punch to be useful for personal defence. Taurus also makes a few similar models....again, that choice comes down to personal preference. The nice thing with revolvers is that you do pretty much anything to them, pull the trigger, and it will go bang.
All that said:
My personal preference is Sig-Sauer, in particular the P220 in .45 ACP. It's a little big for day-to-day carry but it also just fits me perfectly. My wife has a P226 in 9mm as well and that works for her. I find SIGs accurate, reliable, and the Teutonic simplicity of the design is very elegant.
If I had to choose a more compact frame for daily carry, I would recommend the P239, but like I said, I'm partial to SIGs.
A lot of friends, however, are dyed-in-the-wool SIG fans, but their choice of carry gun is a Baby Glock (the G26 or similar, they have several calibre choices in the same frame).
The best recommendation I can make is to go to a local range that has an introductory pistol course. Usually, at least around here (Dallas) part of the intro course is trying out ~20 different guns. Even if you don't need the course (but it never hurts to reinforce the basics anyway) it's probably the cheapest and quickest way to try out a large number of guns.
If you do this, I would bet you'll find one that you like.

You already want the HK45c and P7 (make it a P7M8)... so why ask for other options? You're already looking at the best.
Hold each, see which is most comfortable... then go for that one. Either will prove to be perfection.

Shoot as many of those you listed as you can. Pick the one you shoot the best, not the one that's the most popular on the internet.

this is not my first pistol and i am use to carrying. my kimber 1911 was just recently stolen and am currently looking for something to replace it with. there is a thread a few lines down about it being stolen. i go to the range with friends as much as work and time permit and really enjoy shooting

i was going to swing by the range tomorrow after work to look at my ideas. the reason for asking is mainly to make sure i was not forgetting any options

If that's the case, you're used to carrying a 1911 already, so you don't necessarily need to look at the compacts and subcompacts that have been suggested.
There's no question, the Kimber is a good choice and you can't go wrong with .45 ACP for defence purposes. I almost had a Kimber....my wife was about to get it for me for Xmas then my Dad got sick so I had a leave town quickly, but I'm digressing.
If you're used to a full sized frame, and don't mind the .45 ACP recoil, I would recommend the SIG P220. That's my gun of choice but like I said earlier, it's not a "one size fits all" argument and the best thing to do is just try as many different ones as you can.
One thing to keep in mind, if you've practiced with the 1911, you'll find the DA/SA action on many autos a little wierd for the first shot, and the DAO action on many others really wierd.

I carry both my 226's and P6 IWB comfortably. The P6 conceals very well but I like the full size frame of the 226 personally.
and dont get a kimber

There's no question, the Kimber is a TERRIBLE choice as evidenced by many, many posts here and every gun forum on the internet, and you can't go wrong with .45 ACP for defence purposes.
Fixed that horribly erroneous statement for you....

Everybody is going to have opinions on which gun brand is the best. Sort of like the old Ford vs. Chevy debate. I personally have a Glock 26 as my carry gun and couldn't be happier. It's very compact, easy to conceal, carries a good amount of ammo and is very light. It's also very accurate for a compact gun. The only downside to the 26, if it is a downside, is that it's a 9mm and not the most desirable defense round.
Like was said above, go to the range and fire a few guns and see which one you like best. Many gun manufacturers make very fine weapons and it's really going to come down to your budget and your preference. You don't need to spend $2000 on a gun to have a reliable weapon, just the same, I'd stay away from the $200 range as well. Have you thought about a revolver? Those things are very simple, practically fool proof and can be very concealable.

Big +1 there. It's all about personal preference and what you like. Get what YOU like, not what other people tell you to get. Just using Glock as an example. Many people don't like Glocks at all. Many people love them. There's really no real reason one way or another except it's what the person likes/dislikes IMO. I personally use a Glock 26 as well for my carry. I can't think of many other handguns better suited for myself, so it works for me. I have the option to carry many different types, but it's what fits best. Sure, I could carry my $2,500+ Wilson Combat 1911, but my $500 Glock fits the bill much better and I would bet my life on it. Like Trigger said, you don't have to spend a fortune to get a great firearm.

Oh, and that being said about it's all personal preference, like many have said DON'T GET A KIMBER lol. My Pro Covert II had more jams than my Wilson Combat CQB, HK USP .45, S&W M&P45, Glock 23,26, HK P2000, Sig P226, FN 5.7, and Walther P22 ALL COMBINED. Granted some are ok, but they are just so hit and miss anymore with quality and reliability it's just sad. There are much better options for a good 1911 out there.

quite a bit, HK has a hammer, XD has a striker, HK will therefore give you a DA/SA pull, SA will be much lighter than XD's DA (i think they refer to it as DA)trigger pull which will feel the same every time, albeit heavier. HK will have a safety lever, de-cocker, XD has just grip safety and trigger safety. things of that nature
SigWylde in post #28 couldn't have said it any better, great advice.
