View Full Version : 2009 National's Question (Fire Extinguishers)

A little birdie told me over the weekend about that we may need to have in our vehicle(s) a Fire Extinguisher? Please tell me that I am hearing things and we don't need one. If people go into this National meeting and don't know about it, I do believe there will be some upset people? :popcorn2:

Wut? Was the birdie a Cardinal?

Yep, as of now...it's gonna be a requirement to have a 10-BC extinguisher in your car or you will be turned away for the show. Apparently, there will be a vendor who will renting extinguishers for those who don't have them.

I talk to John Spies, who indicated this has been a requirement at all POCI shows for many years. The requirement obviously is not in the rule book for GTOAA. He's trying to have all pre-1980 or carburated cars require an extinguisher, but doesn't think a rule change will happen. More to come.

This info. was not addressed at yesterday's meeting, but obviously needs to be advertised, as this will be quite a surprise for a lot of new-era owners who show for the co-vention.

I would suggest this information be sent to everyone who is already registered. I would also put it in bold print in "The Legend" every month through the June issue. This would allow people plenty of time to purchase on their own and nobody would have an excuse.

Well lets hope that little birdie wasn't a Raven!!! You saw what the Steelers did against the Ravens!!! Todd, I will post this on BuckeyeGoats.com as well just to let them know about it.

well with all the LS powered GTO's going up in flames due to the fuel rail covers it just makes sense. (sarcasm, boys)

I think that's just plain silly. That should be reviewed and removed.
If you really think the older cars are going to catch on fire, then leave the rule for them and/or mandate it by certain years.

I'm sorry but cars don't just burst into flames anymore and I don't want to shell out my hard earned money for it. I'm broke as it is at the moment.

PS - POCI did not require this at there big Solon Commons show. Never checked my car for it once over the last few years I have gone nore even mentioned anything about it. Sounds cheesy to me...

This rule is obviously so that all the LSx owners can help put out the fires when vintage goats go up in flames. ;)

No doubt, I'm already gonna be paying $100 just to show my car for the week and go autocrossing. Most expensive car show I've ever been to.:bomb:

If this a POCI requirement and not being judged as POCI, then you should not need an extinquisher..... right?? In other words, if I am registering for GTOAA judging only then I should not need one.

Good question. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but since this is a co-vention each others rules will be in effect for this show.

I'm just gonna pick up one of these, and call it a day.

Can anyone clarify that an ABC type is adequate? I can't find a BC only.

Dry chemical extinguishers come in a variety of types and are suitable for a combination of class A, B and C fires. These are filled with foam or powder and pressurized with nitrogen.
BC - This is the regular type of dry chemical extinguisher. It is filled with sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate. The BC variety leaves a mildly corrosive residue which must be cleaned immediately to prevent any damage to materials.
ABC - This is the multipurpose dry chemical extinguisher. The ABC type is filled with monoammonium phosphate, a yellow powder that leaves a sticky residue that may be damaging to electrical appliances such as a computer

All I know is they want a 10 {which refers to the size} with the BC protection.

Class B (liquids & gases) and Class C (energized electrical equipment).

The extinguisher I linked is a UL Listed / Rated 1-A, 10-B:C.

So I guess the 1-A rating is just a bonus.

I think it's all kinda silly...but that's the rules as of now. I didn't make them.:mrrg:

While a rule might be silly - all it takes is a fire going 115mph at the top of the 1/4 mile to make you want to always have a fire extinguisher in your car. Gasoline is not the only flammable liquid in your car. An oil line burnt on my turbo regal at the track, if I had not made that last pass of the night where there was the safety personal, my car would have burnt to a crisp on the freeway on the way home.

Anything with pressurized oils or fuels can lead to a fire. Wet nitrous systems, remote oil filters, oil coolers, oil lines for a turbo, leaky o-ring on an injector, fuel pressure gauge.

Check your hoses/connections regularly and carry a fire extinguisher.

What is odd is that it is a requirment for the show even if you are outside, but it is not required at the track that the show is using in order to drag race.

DevilYellow you are talking about a car at the track, not a car sitting still at a car show? I could understand having a extinguisher at the track, makes perfect sense. Ok, I am probably going to piss some people off and I am sorry if I sound like I am taking this too far, but if everyone is concerned with the possibility someone's car catching fire (while sitting still), then maybe we need to band people from smoking? That is a possible cause of someone's car catching on fire? I don't know and I am sorry if I am pushing this too far, just trying to express my concerns/cost of the event.

Just throw an extinguisher inside and be done with it. :dunno:

Sorry if I didnt follow through with my thoughts. While it happened at the track, every day since then I kept a fire extinguisher in the car. In my instance, it could have happened idling inline at a July 4th car show. My buddy's WS6 burned down when he was doing 25mph in his neighborhood when a fuel line started leaking on his nitrous setup. You don't have to be racing for it to happen.

I don't think anyone things a car will start on fire sitting still, unless I missed something. I think its more or less in regards to cars running and moving around for the show ... some of these cars in the POCI I would suspect are not exactly daily drivers.

Yes it is true, a small ABC fire extinguisher will be required if you are going to show your GTO at the 2009 Co-Vention in Dayton. This has always been a requirement of the POCI (Pontiac Oakland Club International) and was adopted by GTOAA for this meet only since both clubs are sponsoring this event. Information will appear in the GTOAA magazine, the Legend and will also be included with your Confirmation Packets once you have signed up for the Co-Vention.
I am the new PR guy for GTOAA taking Dan Elders place. If you have any other questions, please fell free to post them.

I have a 3 BC, 5 BC and a 1 A 10 BC ... why the 10 BC? ...and I also have been in POCI shows and have not needed one.

I don't see where I would need one either. I am being judged by GTOAA not POCI. The fact this is a joint event should not matter.

GTOAA has adopted the same rule as POCI as far as fire extinguishers go.

Don't think this is a big deal. Modern GTOs have burned to the ground as have fieros due to electrical and fuel issues.
2 years ago. I watched a '69 Camaro catch on fire at a stoplight. I stopped carrying a fire extinguisher when I bought my first GTO in '04. I could have helped that guy out if I had one. Luckily the fire only caused electrical wire and hood damage because the fire dept. got there so quick.
And I've seen 2 Ford Exploders literally burn to the ground in the last year in the same shopping center parking lot.

I may actually need one. I overfilled my tank and pushed gas into the EVAP canister, which promptly created a siphon effect dribbling gas from the vent solenoid. Actually, I'll be arriving with two extinguishers, since this is the maiden voyage for my new fuel system. Anybody got a match?
